I think we're a part of the "dedicated fanbase" audience which will appreciate whatever Adam does as long as he's dedicated to it. We aren't really the majority of people who bring in the big bucks and views or whatnot (unless Adam sets up a Patreon), but we're the ones who watch fish videos and listen to podcasts on Taylor Swift and working out. An estimation of our numbers could probably be drawn out from the podcast listens and recent fish video views, so maybe that's worth looking into and measuring to see the difference between the "general audience" and the "dedicated fanbase"

The grain crop that typically yields the highest calories per acre is corn (maize). Corn is known for its high carbohydrate content, which contributes to its high caloric density. This makes it an efficient crop in terms of calories produced per unit of land. Other grains like rice, wheat, and soybeans also have significant caloric yields, but generally, corn is the leader in terms of calorie production per acre. This efficiency is one of the reasons corn is a staple crop in many agricultural systems around the world.

@@runwords_ adding onto this thought that most corn grown is as feed for livestock, esp for finishing cattle before slaughter. this type of corn too is less useful for human consumption, and has to be processed, eg milled into flour and nixtamalized. corn does however have a unique photosynthetic pathway that enables it to use much less water than most plants, and there has been novel research into inducing this in other plants by transferring the correct genes over.

Wild story in relation to the topic of eating medaka. Tatsuki Fujimoto (the creator of the series Chainsaw Man) once had a pet medaka. When it eventually died his girlfriend told him to bury it, but the soil was too hard, so he left it on the ground. The sight of ants carrying away the fish made him sad, so he got rid of the ants and proceeded to eat the medaka. The next day he had gastroenteritis and lied to his girlfriend about what caused the illness.

Wow, these rice fish are like the unsung heroes of the aquatic world! But you know what's even more fascinating? The way that eel-looking guy (who's not an eel) casually gulps air - talk about living life on the edge. Reminds me of the "What happened to our stash?" dilemma from "We Need Cash." Anyway, it's like the rice fish are the secret agents of the aquarium world, thriving in conditions others find challenging. And that 18th-century painting with the girls and the madaka in a glass beaker is practically an ancient version of an Instagram post - timeless and quirky. By the way, have you ever tried preserving rice fish like anchovies? Apparently, it's a thing, and they describe it as pleasantly bitter. Life in a fishbowl just got a whole lot more interesting!

Speaking of inbreeding, I had 4 generations (it took roughly more than 1 year) which resulted in bent spines and fish that are out of shape after a succession of keeping them in just 1 or 2 tanks (I wasn't experience of them then). It's best to separate them but it's hard to tell newer generations apart. Colorful varieties can also lead to beige off-springs, which is their natural color, or even a white/silver color.

I lived in Kenya for a while and they had a very similar looking fish to this we ate all the time. It was called “omena”. Very fishy. You’d go to a market and they’d have tarps with a giant mound of thus fish drying in the sun. The person selling them would lazily bat the flies away with a flip flop. They would use an old, rusty can as a unit of measurement. You could buy a small, medium or large amount for a few “bob” (local slang for Kenyan schilling). Happy to give more info if anyone is interested.

Release the fish tank build! That sort of thing is fascinating. I watched my younger sister put together two different enclosures for her bearded dragon, and then her hognose snake before she moved away and it was so cool to see the steps involved and the reasonings for decisions she made.

As soon as I saw rice next to tiny fish, my immediate thought was filipino food. This is a regular thing for their breakfast. Fry up hundreds, then add in Apple Cider/White Vinegar and you got a good snack. Not Medaka, but tiny fish more or less.

I found your videos looking for a pizza recipe, I’ve watched pretty much every video you’ve put out and I mostly use KZread for food videos. I have found all my favorite food video creators are pretty much just great at telling a story and I like pretty much any content they put out. I like when you make content about almost anything that you find interesting.

In Korea, mudfish and mud snails take the place of rice fish. They can live in murky, shallow, and muddy waters. And because Korea has colder northern winters rice paddies are drained and left empty regularly, they can be culled regularly when farmers fill or drain their paddies through mid-summer to late fall. Whatever kind of species people gather from it for more protein, farming on a rice paddy is aquaculture before it was cool.
