Q: Are you sending a bad message by telling your audience that you, a person with a perfectly normal body for a 37-year-old man, need to lose weight? A: I worried about that, but look, everybody has their own goals, and these are mine. I'm fine with how I look, but I don't feel very good, and I don't want to buy all new clothes. When I'm stronger and leaner than I am now, I have more energy, less back pain, and I sleep way better. And yes, a leaner me will also probably present a more "marketable look" in the video medium, which is something I do need to think about these days. Also I have a hot wife, and that alone is a good reason to try to keep my shit tight. But you do you. Q: Why can't you put more herbs and spices on that bland fish? A: You absolutely can, but I find decoupling nutrition from pleasure helps me maintain focus on my fitness goals during times like these. I believe they call it "functional eating." Q: What was up with that intro? A: It was an homage to the Hodgetwins - fitness KZreadrs who used to start all their videos with something like, "Hey man, you looking to make some gains?" And now that I've explained the joke, it's not funny anymore. But they're still funny, so you should go check out their channel. Q: Why don't you pronounce the "h" in "herbs"? A: It's very rare to hear an American pronounce the "h." People here who do it are usually either making a mistake, or they're being pretentious by trying to sound British. I sound pretentious enough as it is. Q: Why did you pronounce "Vidalia" like that? A: I have been to Vidalia, Georgia, and the surrounding onion-growing region many times. It's an hour from my house. I've interviewed onion farmers there. How I said it in the video is basically how most people there say it (though I lack the Southern drawl). You can say it how you want to say it. Q: Do you realize that freshwater fish aren't technically seafood? A: Yes. So do the marine biologists at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and yet they still talk about freshwater fish on their website seafoodwatch.org because in English we don't have a better single word to describe all the aquatic animals we eat. Q: Do you realize that carbs are actually great/awful, or that strength training is great/awful, or that some other nutrition or exercise thing is actually the worst/best? A: I am hardly an expert, but I've interviewed lots of scientists and read lots of scientific literature about diet and exercise. If you're saying something like this to me, I think it's probably the case that you are massively oversimplifying the available science. Also, good nutrition is bespoke nutrition. Q: Why do you squat the way you do? A: Squat form is a very controversial thing on the internet, in part because there are lots of different ways to squat depending on your goals (i.e. playing football vs growing Tom Platz quads) and also because good squat form is highly dependent on your own personal biomechanics. I've been squatting many years, and I've had trainers look at my form several times. This is the basic form that I have found works with my structure, and it's hardly unusual. However, I will go deeper, lower-bar and certainly much heavier as I progress. I've been almost sedentary for a year. Especially as I get older, I find that I need to be VERY cautious about any exercises involving spinal compression until my core strength comes back on line. The squat you see me doing here is what feels safest to me at this stage in my process. And yes, I deadlift too, but it will be several weeks before my core is strong enough for that. Q: If you're dieting, why is there Coke and other unhealthy things in your fridge? A: I am not the only person who lives in my house. Also, regarding the other ingredients, I am continuing to develop/test/shoot normal recipes for this channel, because not everyone in the world wants to eat cauliflower rice and tilapia for the next two months. Hell, I don't really want to.

Carbs aren't an issue. They're needlessly demonized because of sugar. The only carbs you want to worry about are the fast digesting carbs, like sugar. Because it causes more significant insulin spikes and isn't satiating at all. For 99% of people, getting a healthy diet takes 3 steps. 1. Reduce sugars 2. Add variety 3. Make sure you're eating enough protein. Everything beyond that is marginal gains with little real world benefit and a whole crap load more work. Which is why 95% of diets fail. You are simply not going to put in a lot of extra effort for everyone.

Things as simple as reducing the sugar you consume from your morning coffee or instead of having a juice/soda with your lunch or dinner having a glass of water. Yeah, Gordon can talk out his ass all he wants, but unless you buy your fish from the fisherman/vendor within 1 mile of the dock where it came in, flash freezing does less to hurt the fish than the time it spends rotting waiting for you to buy it. If you can't find that fish fresh caught this morning within a 20 minute drive or buy it alive (i.e. clams, lobster, etc.), frozen will almost always be better unless you're a high-end restaurant having your fish flown in daily.

Adam, I appreciate the video specifically targeting weight loss. That said I ALREADY lost 35 lbs this year almost entirely thanks to your channel. I have taken your concept of freezing foods into ice cubes to a ridiculous extreme. I personally can't stand eating the same food over and over but by eating rice paired with reheated cubes of pesto, lentil curry, black beans (your recipe) or bolognese (also your recipe) I've been able to very precisely manage portion control and I only have to cook about once a week to replenish whichever cube stash is running short. Any more recipes you store in ice cube form would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a million!

Another good ice cube food hack is to puree left over vegetables and freeze the puree. Whenever I'm making something with strong flavors like tomato sauce I take out the puree cubes and dissolve a few into the dish. The food usually tastes no different but I'm stretching out the dish and getting more nutrition. Plus it's nice not to waste food.

If it makes you feel any better, you're not alone. It's hard to eat healthy when the environment around you is full of fat, sugar, and salt because those are delicious and our stupid monkey brains want easy calories. Eating is also very much a social thing. The best thing you can do is try to find healthy stuff that tastes good to you and that you can make the _easy_ option when you're hungry like his big POT OF FOOD. And don't wait to make that food until you're hungry; make it ahead of time. Side-step your willpower.

I really like how you break down rather complex things into something perfectly doable for the average guy without going the "you have to do this exact same thing" route. I'm considering going with lean chicken for the most part, mostly because i like fish way too much. The idea of making the food not a reward but a nutritional necessity is great, and totally agree on that you have to remember to treat yourself once in a while. Repetitiveness however will kill the mood after a while, might do a switch to fish after week two. Really nice idea with the cauliflower "rice". Anyways picked up quite a few hints from the vid that will make getting started quite easy.

I've lost 90 lbs in 7 months. I'm a 55 year old male, with only walking 20 minutes a day for exercise. Cutting carbs is really the key, along with keeping your calorie count between 1200-1500 per day. I aimed for 40 net carbs per day. I drank a protein shake in the morning, chicken tacos or Arby's double roast beef sandwich for lunch (no shells or buns) and then chicken and some sort of green vegetable, or eggs and bacon for supper. Now it's about keeping the calories below 2000 in order to maintain. For me, I found the repetitiveness helpful. You find something you like and stick with it. That way you don't have to wonder "Can I eat this or not?" It may not work for you, but I needed the repetition.

A diet is just eating in a certain way So if you dont have any kind of schedule or certain kinds of foods you eat more or frequently then your not on a diet But anyone that has any kind of frequency or common stuff they eat are technically on a diet regardless of if its a planned one or just by chance and doesn’t follow any existing diet When people say diet they mean on of two things This is what i eat often This is what i have to or am allowed to eat because i need to “blank”

In Japan it's the cultural norm to brush after eating anything, even a small snack. Not that absolutely everybody does it but it's really common for people to keep a toothbrush and a little mirror in their desk at the office for example. I wonder how much of a factor that is in their high life expectancy stats, as well as the high fish and ferment traditional diet etc etc that people usually bring up.

I gotta say, I made this vegetable soup & the only thing I did different was no vinegar, no white wine, & rotels for the tomatoes, and collard greens instead of kale. I add olive oil per bowl, & a dash of msg. Man. This soup is incredible. Its the first soup I've ever made, and I like to make something I've never made on the first day of every year, and this made the cut bigtime, exceeded my highest expectations. Adam, Thank you very much for this video, I came back and re watched it when I started dieting for inspiration. The cauliflower rice/ tilapia is great, even cold. I like to add red chili paste as I eat it for a little kick. What I really want to thank you for is the vegetable soup. My entire life I thought I didn't like vegetable soup, turns out I just didn't like the veggies that were being put into it. My current version is: carrots, shallots, dried mushrooms (oyster this time around), frozen peas, roma tomatoes, lots of garlic and a serrano pepper for just a hint of kick. I could, and currently do eat it every day

I decided to combine these two ideas and I made a big pot of fish stew. I like sockeye salmon so I baked about 2 pounds of that with some honey sriracha before putting it in a big pot with white wine, zucchini, squash, shredded carrot, green onion, bamboo, water chestnut, bell pepper, and a couple bags of frozen riced cauliflower. Delicious and gave me quick heat up meals for days.
