We wanted to show you how the Volvo XC40 P8 Recharge is the perfect school run car, but due to restrictions we had to replace school children with some very well behaved dogs instead!
The XC40 P8 Recharge might be big and heavy, but it also has the stability and safety you would expect from Volvo. Despite being a 5-seater family car it offers some serious performance with a decent range and the ability to rapid charge.
There's nothing wrong with it, its a joy to drive, but it's expensive and when you consider the petrol version is around half the price you have to wonder why they can't make the electric model more affordable.

Can we all appreciate how Fully Charged is 100% transparent and honest about ludicrous pricing scheme and low effort from manufacturers to NOT drive prices down? Take any other "regular" car review, they NEVER speak their mind about the price and certainly NEVER criticize a pricetag. Fully Charged is the only "mainstream" (and I think it's ironic to write this now about FC) media to denounce this. This is why I'm a supporter. Keep doing what you guys are doing, this is amazing. Laughed my ass off, enjoyed the doggos and clapped hard at Bobby speaking truths. Another great episode

The fun thing is that in Denmark most cars cost double of what you would pay in other countries. So we are used to high prices. However, for what you get, and in comparison to other cars in Denmark, the XC40 recharge is reasonably priced and I am so happy about it. It still is lots of money, but it is not impossible.

Well done, Robert and the Fully Charged team, for openly and unambiguously highlighting the frankly ludicrous pricing by these car manufacturers. For years and years, the barriers to entry were the lack of cars, range anxiety and the charging network. They are no longer problems It is now price, and it has to change to make mass adoption of this technology possible. Keep up the fantastic work.

Volvo (and the other ICE manufacturers) have two promlems: 1) battery supply is constrained by however many their suppliers are able to make (never enough) so they need to temper demand and 2) the current need to not cannibalise ICE sales. Because, for most people, the simple fact is that EV's are just better. They^re faster, cheaper to run, quieter, smoother so, when faced with an equal choice, who wouldn't go for the EV? Faced with these problems, and finding themselves supply constrained, the manufacturers opt for premium pricing. Like you say, this has to change or Tesla (and maybe some of the other better-funded EV startups) will eat them for lunch. ICE manufacturers find themselves between a rock and a hard place, basically.

@EleanorPeterson

I think you may be missing a key point about EV ownership. Some evangelical peeps are actually PROUD that they have to pay more for their vehicles. By paying more than others can afford, their commitment to a greener future is recognised and applauded by the community. Paying through the nose is glorious and a clear endorsement of their planet-saving credentials. Why, they're virtually superheroes. A cheap EV would be anathema. Paying a lot for their vision of the future gives them a warm sense of self-worth as they sacrifice their disposable income for the greater good of mankind. Yay. The idea of a cheap, simple, common EV offends them because it doesn't take their religion seriously enough. It's a little bit like veganism in that respect: some people just quietly live the lifestyle and get on with things, but others are militant and take every opportunity to announce their choice. They begin every sentence with "Well, speaking as a vegan, I find that -" Many EV owners aren't too different. Read a few Comment sections either here or on the Transport Evolved channel and see how often the word Tesla crops up. "Well, speaking as a Tesla owner, I find that -" Yeah, right, thanks for that. People like to make it perfectly clear that they're nobly and heroically paying a premium to keep the EV future alive and selflessly giving whatever the manufacturers demand. Because they're patriots too, of course, and China might be watching. Also, they don't want to be overlooked when their lord and saviour Ego Muskrat welcomes them to heaven (on Mars) and hands out the clouds, iHarps and carbon-fibre angel wings. I imagine that British Volvo owners will love the fact that their 'statement' has cost them an extra £20,000. EVs for proper people have to be reassuringly expensive, like BMWs. Why get a free dog from the rescue home when you can spend £8,000 on a pedigree puppy? Mmm... Satisfying...

Way too expensive - especially when it's made in China, or uses a Chinese platform, or "running gear" as Robert describes it. None of the major established carmakers want to sell EV's until they absolutely have to, and they will be able to keep the prices high until ICE cars are no longer allowed to be sold.

10:53 For those wondering, this is 13-pin to 7-pin trailer socket adaptor. This one actually has two 7-pin sockets - one for standard functions (turn indicators, brake lights, tail lights) that all trailers must have and one for secondary functions (fog lights, reversing lights, +12V permanent (usually refrigerator in caravans) +12V via ignition lock) that most trailers don't have. It is usually caravans that utilise such functionality. 13-pin (ISO 11446) is newer standard that incorporates all of the functions above and currently you often need an adaptor. Some basic trailers are still manufactured with 7-pin (ISO 1724) plug, despite most new cars being fitted (in case of factory fitted towbar) with 13-pin socket.

Great to finally see a review about compatibility with dogs! When we had a Newfoundland (which is huge), no saloon/ hatch or estate car had enough headroom. Even Volvo's XC90 SUV was nowhere near big enough. It took a small Van (Transit Connect, VW Caddy or Citroen Berlingo) to fit him in the back. Now we have to buy a car for a Bernese Mountain Dog, which is smaller but still large. The XC40 Recharge, Ionic5, Mustang Mach E, Tesla Model 3 are all too small in the back. The Answer? A Skoda Enyaq.

Something people have to understand about this car is that it is fully loaded with all the extras. If you do the same with the ice version you get to a very similar prize. That's usually the strategy for all new cars, fully loaded while cheaper variants follow.

Great review. I did a comparison between this, the ford mach 3, vw id4, and model y.. (I lease volvo for over 17 years. Loyal customer) I narrowed my decision between vw id4 awd vs tesla model y. If id 4 awd has 300 mile range, it would be nice. But I decided on the ID4. 250 miles is ok. Be better to have 300 and after 15 years I have a 50 mile buffer. I am not getting a tesla for its racing speed and auto pilot.

Lovely looking, top quality car. I’d like one but will not consider buying one. As soon as Robert told us about the pricing structure and the higher cost to UK customers, Volvo lost me.
Great review. We have driven the diesel one since they were introduced, and it feels very loose to drive compared to my Tesla. The app works, and allows basic unlocking and seeing where the car is, trip recording and so forth. Very basic stuff compared to others and I hope the Recharge has a more complete app for an EV (time to charge, etc). Here in Switzerland I got a quote of around CHF 70K, which is more than the Diesel by about 15K, but the garage will always give a discount of some type when pushed. Might well trade in the Diesel for one.
The electric towbars are standard across the Volvo range. I have two :-) The Volvo Common Modular Architecture (CMA) platform was always designed for pure electric and plug-in hybrid.
Haha 'shonky' - your wife has clearly been influencing your slang, love it! As a car it's fine but shocking how much money they want for it, esp compared to the petrol version!

I’ve driven a gas(petrol) version of the XC-60 here in the USA. 2019 or 2018 model year. I’m not saying it’s as good as Tesla Autopilot, because I haven’t driven a Tesla. But it is the best system I’ve driven, maybe second to a Tesla....

A excellent video Robert, I concur it is a very expensive machine, plus alas I am married to the original voice of Apple, so I have to obey :o)...................
Many people consistently fail to consider several crucial points when comparing car prices between different countries: 1. VAT is included in list prices in Europe, however i EU it varies from 17 to 27%, depending on the country. 2. In USA, the list prices are excluding not only what they call shipping and handling - which is usually around 1000 USD - but more importantly *excluding* VAT, so for these reasons car prices in USA are consistently lower. 3. In some countries there are heavy registration taxes on new cars, such as in Denmark where it starts from 85% (hydrogen cars are tax exempt). 4. Standard equipment level and base model level varies from market to market so unless the specifications are the same, the value of the product is not the same. For that reason cars in Denmark as an example often have the minimum level of standard equipment since they are slapped with 85% tax. 5. MSRP is often fixed for a year at a time, which means that exchange rates may skew the comparison significantly during the year. 6. Tax incentives varies between countries. For sure there are even more factors that play a role, but to summarise: just comparing a few different countries list prices without understanding exactly what is included does not reveal the pricing policy of the car manufacturer.
