Glarrys have chunky necks, so if you're looking for a slim Jazz Bass profile this isn't the one for you. If you're comfortable with a Precision Bass neck this will feel right at home.

It's definitely wider than a standard jazz, but it doesn't feel toooo cumbersome to me

@@JonnyDibble i actually prefer wider necks myself, and I'm sure for most it's probably fine, but I know some people who want a J Bass are looking for the slimmer neck. I'm guessing because they're a budget brand rather than having different necks made for both basses they just took the existing P Bass necks and used those. I kind of think it would be a good idea for them in the future if they're going to take the "one size fits all" approach maybe use necks with a slimmer profile on all models especially to appeal to younger players. Overall I think they're a great buy it's just that one detail I think if they tweaked it they'd be perfect for what they are.

Yeah you're right. The necks on some of their guitars are ridiculously thick lol. Once you get used to them it's alright but for most newbies who've played either cheap or expensive guitars that chunky neck can be a challenge.

I got a Glarry JB as my first ever bass guitar about a year and three quarters ago. $69.99 plus $29.99 shipping before inflation. Started learning from KZreadrs like this guy Jonny right here and teaching myself with it. Everything from 5 point setup to scales to finger picking to pick picking and failing on my slap technique. Recently I upgraded to a Sterling short scale Musicman as my number two bass. That Sterling and goofing around at the local music store are my only basis of comparison. When I switch over to playing on my Sterling (that’s about $600) I can definitely tell there’s a huge difference in quality between the two. But I keep coming back to the cheap ole Glarry cause a little bit of nostalgia and partly cause it’s just fun to noodle around on it and strengthen my pinky finger. Also I recently started modding out my Glarry. The great thing about this budget bass and modding is that I don’t get squeamish about sanding and drilling on a $75 bass while changing out the bridge and pick-guard. Next step is to swap out the pots and knobs along with installing new pickups. Jonny is right about the pickups and pots being a little reluctant to produce great sounds. Working on the Glarry just makes me want to grab and play it even more. So yeah, great starter bass for all my fellow noobs and you can practice luthier skills then sleep well at night if you accidentally destroy your guitar in the process.

I literally learned how to play on a Glarry Bass starting in 2021 April. Mine is a P Bass (GP1). Interesting it has exactly 💯 the neck that's on the GJ1 Jazz Bass here. They both sound amazing and have a great feel. You can play any style of music you want. I've gotten so used to the Glarry whenever I go bass hunting I can never seem to find one I like more

I bought a Glarry 5 string jazz bass as a second bass to complement my Ibanez Gio P-bass. First impressions were : wow - this is so much lighter, wow - the back of the neck is chunkier. Sounds good, and it's nice to be able to get those low B notes without seriously detuning. After a month or so, neither has become my preferred one over the other - each has it's place, but I'm glad I started with a 4 string P-bass.

Just pulled mine in from the porch. Fed Ex was right on time. After opening the box, I found it wrapped in Chinese soft wrap. The Guitar was on top, with the gig bag and the useless chord and strap. Also added were cheapy Allen wrenches. Ok after getting the wrap off, I was awestruck by the initial appearance. Mine is the natural grain with rosewood neck. As I was expecting the worse case scenario, the frets were slightly rough. Not overbeairing on the hands, but did need a light sanding on the fret edges. I did this with a 200 grit sanding block. Problem solved. Tuned guitar to pitch, checked the neck for relief. Perfect for my finger touch. Found the radius curve to be 12. Adjusted the bridge saddles accordingly. Sanded the neck with 400 grit sandpaper. To perfection. Removed the pick guard plastic protection, plugged it in to my Fender Rumble 25. Tried each pot for clean and smooth rotation. Perfect. All have appropriate tonal changes as well as volume control. Intonation was spot on as well. Very impressed. Was going to change or upgrade as needed. But there is no reason to change a thing. Potentially putting on some Dean Markets this weekend.

Great for a beginner as you say Jonny as its these people who when they first pick up decide if bass is for them. I bought an Epiphone Thunderbird off a young girl who obviously had a bad time as it was almost unplayable. These bigger companies should put more time into setting up their 'budget' instruments. If they did, it may pay them dividends further down the road.

Got a Glarry pbass - Stock pickups 9k and solid sounding, tuners 26-1 ratio rarely go out of tune even after a good hammering, Headstoock pretty much exactly the same as a cort24jjgb (yes not pretty) nut plastic crap so change it out with a tusq put some rotosound on and its a really cracking bass for 105 quid (including cost of strings and nut) Set up on mine was poor but zero fret problem's and the neck was ace, 41mm at the nut and slim throughout. I guess they can vary a little as some say the necks are thick. Just my take on the pbass. Great review Jonny.

Sounded thin and trebly to me but that can be how you EQ'd it and it is single coils of course. I have a HB MB-4 with a fat humbucker and prefer its bassier boom but it does weigh 8lb 10oz, which is over a pound heavier but doesn't bother me and when I bought it, it cost £99! Superb value and again a great bass for a beginner like me.

No. This isn't what I'd choose. A beginner needs something cost effective and something that they won't grow out of quickly. I'd recommend the Sterling By Musicman Stingray (Sub Series). What you have there is an active pickup, bargain bass with a fine reputation behind it. It is a 2EQ and has some of the professional characteristics of its bigger brother, the Musicman Stingray. If you can get a good condition one second hand grab it.

For the price and for a beginner you can’t beat it! To many people are worried about a name on a headstock, if it sounds good to you then it’s worth every penny. Bass and guitar quality from all manufacturers in China, Indonesia, Korea, Japan, Mexico, U.S. and Canada are getting better and better. A Glarry could be a Ivy or Grote or Firefly as could an Epiphone be a Gibson or Squire be a Fender. The big dogs need to watch out for the little dogs because their nipping on their heals!
