The People's Porsche - 1982 Porsche 924

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The so-called people's Porsche. The 924. Developed with Volkswagen, so often maligned, so forgotten compared to the newer Porsche 944 and Porsche 968.
Here is the Porsche you could actually aspire to own back in the 70s and 80s.

With the mechanical quality of these cars, if it feels like it's done 113,000 miles, it's probably done 213,000 or even 313,000 miles.

I bought a 924 when I moved to Germany in 1992- had it for 4 years, it was brilliant. Later I bought a couple of 911 cabriolets- sexy but not much better functionally- just more prestige apart from 'open air' motoring which I prefer. My crowning moment was when a young lady at the petrol station asked me if I could help to jump start her boyfriends Opel- of course- bonnets open- she asked: why has he got so little and you have so much (under the bonnet) : )) PS the cam belt broke- 'safe engine' - the valves do not hit : )) we also managed to get 3 people and 2 bicycles in the 924 with everything shut- the 3rd bicycle had to go with a friend in his Honda Accord . .

A Senior executive at Porsche is quoted as having said of the 924, if it has a Porsche badge on the front it is a Porsche! After all, the first Porsches were created by Ferry Porsche out of old VW "beetles" and a high price ticket always impresses people even if it is not justified. Incidentally, the Porsche 924 engine is descended from the engine that Mercedes-Benz designed in 1965 for a car that they decided not to build. When VW acquired the Audi brand that engine went into that car. The engine went through various developments with VW and the version that was taken on board by Porsche was subjected to an new cylinder head and crankshaft to make it fit for Porsche's purpose in a sporty GT model. As a model, it replaced the 914 and 916 which were VW's and Porsches and nicknamed "VoPo's"!

late 80ies /early nineties a school friend had a 924s. remember that we ´ve been 5, sometimes even 6 of us in the Porsche on night rides to the clubs. Few years later I bought a 924 targa and drove for 3-4 years. Loved this car and still do. No bling-bling , but a solid and all-season sports car.

Great review, Ed. A friend has an 84 924 Turbo that I have driven. I love the driving position for my 6'3" frame. The ride is firm but not jarring, and the handling is superb. My preference would be the 924S, with the 944 engine. It puts out the same horsepower as the earlier Turbo, but without the insurance penalty of the Turbo. What a great car.

Good easy paced review, and not dumbed down like so many others out there. I've always rather fancied one of these. When I was 18 I had a renault 11 turbo, and spotted a nice 924 in a local dealer for a sensible price. I test drove it and really liked it but after the renault it felt decidedly slow. Fast forward 20 years and I again *almost* bought a porsche, this time a 996 Carrera 2, but rational thought got in the way, so I kept my existing car and purchased a new Superbike instead. One day I'll test drive a porsche and actually buy it!

1977,1978, model had the nicest looking mag wheels on this car. Too bad the first edition of the 924 had such a small engine. They should have put a 2.5 litre engine immediately, the engine they used for the 1986 924. Had they done that, I think the 924 would have had greater popularity/success/recognition. In my opinion, the 924 was one of the nicest looking Porsches.

I had one of those, back when they were new. I must say, besides the badge, they were never true Porsche cars. We used to say they were Audis, with that rather docile truck engine. The fuel injection systems back then were not necessarily better than carbs, often it was the other way around. This one came with a mechanical FI system, nothing fancy digital MegaSquirt there. Remember the first VW Golf GTI, they were actually rather slow cars.

Morten Kristoffersen I get what your saying but you could say the same thing about the Porsche 356 first 911 it was just a beetle.. or the 914 ...today’s modern cars are doing the same as its predecessors sharing parts and chassis look at the new Mercedes x-class looks nice buts it’s basically a Nissan pick up truck or even the new Maserati Ghilbi shares the same parts from a Chrysler, even the new Porsche’s now share the same parts from Audi VW so it’s gone full circle, even though the Porsche924 was hand built in Audi’s car plant it was still designed by Porsche designers.

Another excellent review; thanks for putting the spotlight on the car which basically saved Porsche from going belly up. The 924 was much maligned by those who had never driven or owned one but the fact that there are many still around today is testament to the build quality. They were over engineered. The 924 engine was as tough as old boots and in stock form it's engine block was strong enough to take 400Bhp. They enjoyed success in motor racing and today make a really practical and good looking classic. The later 924S model with the 2.5 litre 944 engine was, and still is, a fantastic sports car . It was a little known fact that it was a lot more lively to drive than it's bigger brother the 944, though the 944 had better handling and roadholding. Great to see one getting a 21st century review.

In my view, the 924 is too ordinary for a Porsche - this was the company that at the time was manufacturing 911 Turbos. The 924 comes over like an MV Agusta moped. They redeemed themselves pretty sharpish with the 944 which had Porsche's own 2,5 l 4-cyl and decent power. But the 924 is an ersatz VW Corrado with an LT van engine (which doubtlessly also got fuel injection at some stage - emissions regulations would have required it).

Very enjoyable video. When I was made redundant in 1993 I spent my redundancy money on a 1981 924, one of the most enjoyable cars I’ve ever owned. Did a 700 mile day (2 of us were driving !) to the Narbonne in South of a France from Caen that summer, the car never missed a beat. Hugely under rated and, like the Boxster i later owned, castigated and derided by people who’ve never actually driven one. As you say in the film, enough power to be fun without being over whelming. Ended up selling it in 1997 to enable me to buy a 1948 Daimler DB18. A very different beast. Sadly the 924 later caught fire and was written off, which I found out when I was trying to track it down to buy it back. Thanks for bring back the memories 👍🏻

Thanks Ed for another great review , the 924's design must of looked very futuristic when it was launched in 1975 compared with so many dull cars at the time & still looks fairly modern , this example is particularly nice in silver/blue . The 'entry level' Porsche really was unfairly judged at the time with so many car enthusiasts expecting 911 levels of performance & like many still do now dismissing it just because it has a 4 cylinder engine instead of a flat 6. 'Even with all the man spreading in the world this isn't a very practical car' , ha ha ! , so it wasn't a 'very nice place to be' then !.

@Chocolate Hat It needs more than a gentle restoration. I don't know about the technical side of things, but the interior is gone.

It's great to see an unbiased review of the 924. I owned three of these in the 1980's, and they were very reliable and fairly practical. I did all my own maintenance, which was very easy on this car and you could buy most of the parts from the local VW garage. The performance of these was adequate for the time so long as you were not expecting supercar acceleration, but the handling was great. Of course I got used to people telling me it was not a real Porsche, and it was pointless trying to educate someone who said that. These engines were very strong and fairly simple, if you kept maintained then according the service schedule they went on and on and on. The example you are reviewing is a sad example, but at least it's a survivor. The interiors were a bit of a weakness on these and cracks in the dash and broken plastic trim were common, the chassis was galvanised in some areas but not all the body panels were galvanised and they did suffer from corrosion in some places. The 924 and the 928 were in design at the same time, the 4 denoting 4 cylinders and the 8 denoting 8 cylinders, though of course they are very different cars. I recall having a few electrical issues with mine, but never a mechanical breakdown. I seem to recall that the all-metal key that you described as a spare should be a valet key, that is a key that fits the ignition and door but not the glovebox or the boot. Though it's possible that an all metal blank was used to cut a copy of the main key.

Rudolph Guarnacci Maybe it’s because I owned three of these and have such good memories of them, for me it’s sad to see this example which could benefit from some tlc. I’m sure it will get that now that it’s possibly in the hands of an enthusiast.

Sent that one too soon.....Anyway, ours was a white 4 spd. With beige brown vinyl. When we got it it sported a very 1970’s painted on wood grainy graphic on the sides of the car. My dad spent many hours using lacquer thinner to remove it. What a VW parts bin special interior! Ours had a/c so it lost the clock and had a large protruding knob dedicated to a/c. In the USA one or maybe both of those out of place warning lights in the center was a fasten seat belt warning which probably had an annoying buzzer as well. The smogged US cars made about 90hp....so not fast. As far as space goes, this was our family car! My sister and I once rode in those back seats on a 12 hr trip WITH a dog in each rear footwell. We were small enough that once in got dark we could fold the rear seat back down and lay across the car to go to sleep. Ahh the memories. My parents were crazy!

Had i 944 some years ago, one of the best cars i have owned. In retrospect, i would like a 924. All very Germanic, rolling down the road with Kraftwerk on the stereo.

Nice review! New subscriber ;) Why isn’t there a cambelt cover? The automatic gearbox was not a first. On the first 911 you could have the sportomatic transmission, which was shifting like a manual but with automatic clutch. The foglamp switch is upside down as well which is funny. Lovely color. It looks like Cirrusblau from BMW! Greetings from Belgium.

The owner bought this car as a bit of a project and the threads for the cover are stripped. It’s on the to-do list. But for now, it’s not the end of the world as it’s a non-interference engine.

@@TwinCam It looks like an great project. I have seen a couple of mint examples for sale in the last couple of years and have been very tempted by them as a 924 is a great example of a classic that you can use every day. The mint examples I have seen have been surprisingly inexpensive. I have project cars every now and then and they always end up costing me much more than if i'd just bought a mint example instead!

Kind of easy to see why the Celica became a much more practical option with better build quality and more options for far less money.

🤔 I beg to differ.. how many celicas of the same year are on the road still going compared the 924? The celica could of been a more practical car but I wouldn’t say better on build quality..

It's engineered as a VW and would have been more highly regarded if it had sold as one. A contemporary Scirocco was probably a better car too. Certainly more practical. Still, as you said, it kept Porsche in a position to keep turning out 911s. Cool, thanks.
