The Pentax 6x7 105 Look for GFX - Mitakon 65mm Review

I’ve often said how the Mitakon 65mm on the Fuji GFX reminds me of the legendary Pentax 6x7 and 105mm f2.4 combo. But is this just me romanticising things? How close does it actually come? So in this video, sharing my thoughts about this lens I love, including a bunch of images, and some direct side-by-side comparisons with the Pentax. The results surprised me! Shoutout to ‪@Tom-Humble‬ for helping me with this one. Go and give him a follow

They are and they aren't. For what's important in your (Matt and Kyle) style they are very close. For me as a portrait photographer that likes building dream-like and surrealistic images with lots of bokeh incorporated into the frame, the two lenses are night and day in terms of rendering out of focus artefacts and the Takumar (while not my fav lens for P67) still wins in that regard. That said, for my purposes there are lots of lenses that are easily adaptable to the GFX that get effects similar to much more exotic/expensive/difficult-to-adapt lens combinations on the P67, so within the next couple of years the switch to a GFX is probably inevitable for me as well.

Thanks for this really excellent video ! It’s really helped me decide on buying a Mitakon 65, 1.4. I shoot a lot of landscapes, and was a bit concerned about dof. Your video and your beautiful landscapes, along with some others I’ve seen on Flickr have assured me on that point. I think it should be fine stopping down, and using hyperfocal focusing. The tonality and light in the images I’ve seen from the lens are wonderful.

I’m currently in a debacle with wanting to keep a medium format film camera, get rid of them completely or simply switch to a GFX. Large format is still my main bag but after recently traveling with the Pentax 6x7…I don’t know. The black and white is damn near identical. I would have loved to see some color comparisons but digital is just getting closer and closer. It’s really tempting. Damn you, Kyle 😂

I hear you man! I've been dying for a GFX for years, not sure if I'll ever get one. Maybe if film falls out completely... But the thing is, the slow, deliberate process of shooting film; metering, framing, developing. That's the medicine I need in this fast paced world of today! :D

  • @mjamesporter

Hey Bryan, been a fan of your work for a couple years!!! As a long term owner of a 6x7 and a GFx with the mitakon (I brought it to hopefully replace the Pentax two years ago) this is my take on color... I have taken so many shots on the Pentax and even used those shots to make presets for the GFX to try and replicate the colours and feel from the Pentax, it gets close, very close. But my wife can tell everytime which one is the Pentax, there's something very special about that 6x7 neg + 105, and at this point I can't even work out what it is. Although it has some magical depth to it that the GFX just doesn't quite have (still insane though) I think that's just because film is a physical thing, so much so, I am still holding onto the Pentax even tho I barely touch it! The lens is heavy (which I like as it reminds me of a Pentax) and slow and hard to focus wide open on a digital display as it's sooo shallow, but you get used to that. Point is it's VERY close, but it's not quite 6x7, I have no regrets😁 Keep up the good work!!!

  • @KyleMcDougall

    @KyleMcDougall

    Жыл бұрын

Yeah man, I can relate to that. I still love the P67, and will be keeping it, but I don't shoot as much LF as you do. Doing this comparison and seeing how close it is, gives me confidence in the GFX setup if I need/want to use it for certain work-just knowing that it's going to match up well. I think colour can come close as well, the challenge is just knowing how to get to where you want to go.

@@mjamesporter the P67 in general is a magical camera cause it's the biggest possible frame size with an internal shutter without going into 4x5" Graflex cameras, so there is a plethora of exotic and unusual lenses you can adapt to the P67 that wouldn't work with any other camera, or at least not to their full potential. Some Pentacon Six, Hasselblad and Contax lenses can be up-scaled from their native 645/6x6 to 6x7, there are ISCO, Schneider, Meopta, Kowa and other brand cinema projection lenses that cover a 7x7 frame cause they were used for IMAX and Panavision projection, there's also the legendary Kodak Aero Ektar, the bokeh monster and unchallenged GOAT for portrait bokehlicious-ness, that you can also tilt on 6x7 cause it covers 5x5", and many many other fun strange(r) things.

Fast forward to today, and I shoot GFX whenever I can get away with it (mainly in the studio). I love the Fuji glass but I think I may have to add a Mitakon 65 to get that old Pentax look as an option. Wow, looks identical! Thanks for the video!

Hey regarding the bit about the 55mm f1.2 equivalence of the 105mm f2.4 at 6:00, if you take into account the crop needed to get a full frame sensor to the same square format the equivalence becomes closer to a 45mm f1, similarly taking into account the square crop on the GFX the mitakon looks closer to a 47mm f1 on a square cropped full frame.

Thank you for the nice comparison review ☺️ It is not a surprise that they are very close, even by character. If you compare optical for mulas both of them have the same design. With only difference that Mitakon has a speed booster from 3 elements in-built on the back, after the same lens disign. Perhaps it was originally the idea, copy Pentax 6x7 lens, and than squize the image circle to the GFX sensor size... I heard that even high refractive index glass on the Mitakon are placed exactly the same way as on Pentax 67, and even that Mitakon is radioactive, as well, which makes me thinking that they used the same thoriated glass, as on Pentax...

Great comparison, Kyle! I meant to do this for myself as well but you've saved me the work there :D I was also surprised about just how close they are, I'd probably even give the Mitakon the edge there as the Bokeh is even a tad bit softer. Now all we need is the perfect film color simulation and we're good ;-) Btw, I think the issue with your Mitakon is specific as the aperture ring of my copy works absolutely smooth.

I have a GFX100 that I use for work and a 50R that is kind of my Every day walking around camera. I had to buy 3 copies of the Mitakon before I got one right.. The first one had aperture blades problem, and the second one Was able to focus more near than supposed to and then simply did not focus on Infinity. The third one I got was finally right, but my worries about the quality control and overall lifespan of these lenses keep me worried every day. I love the shooting experience with the 50R and I absolutely detest the shooting experience (and extra weight of the GFX100), but I have to say it makes a world of difference to have in body image stabilization. The ease of use and overall pleasing experience of having a stabilized preview, makes a world of difference. If Fujifilm released an updated 50R with in body stabilization, I'd be the first in line to get it. I think IBIS it's the single most important andveffective development in camera technology. And for anyone thinking about buying a 50R or any other GFX, just do it. Weight and cost aside, there is absolutely no other smaller sensor camera system that can give you anywhere near the same OQ flexibility, enlightening experience or results.. not to mention what's ultimately the must fundamental of all things, the joy.

On paper a 55/1.7 sounds amazing, but I'm afraid Fuji is going to go the same route as with the 56/1.2 for X mount and make a modern well corrected lens with very buttery smooth bokeh which I'm not a fan of. Wish more modern manufacturers offered at least some lenses with oldschool Biotar/Planar designs. I think Voigtlander is the only one and I can't even remember if anything else than the 35/1.4 Nokton Classic has that vintage out of focus rendering character.

Would be interesting to compare this with the 105 + kippon focal reducer. Also, it’s a shame Pentax has not kept up with their own digital medium format system. If they were to produce and market a lens as a digital equivalent to the famous 105… I feel like it would be a huge hit as popular as the Pentax 67 has become. Anyway, very interesting comparison! Thank you!

It is not a surprise that they are very close, even by character.

Hmmm, not a lens that I've used, so I can't comment on the exact look. That being said, you could easily match the field of view. The 55 on the Pentax would be similar to a 28mm on 35, if I'm correct. So maybe a 35mm lens of some sort on the GFX. Pentax 645 35mm? That could be worth a shot.
