Hey everybody, I wanted to share an explanation that Casey gave about the lyrics “Scars that cover wounds can’t hide the self-inflicted pain.” These are purely metaphorical “scars.” Weiss is referencing the pain she experiences mentally, not physically! I hope this clears everything up for everybody that is worried Weiss self-harmed.

It's called interpretation. For the most part it's her own fault for where she ends up and she blames it on herself. So that's her scar that cover her wounds and she thinks it's all self inflicted. However it could mean bodily harm, which is a serious topics that may or may not be explored. Like any art it's also meant to be interpretated in one's own way. So yes it could mean she did cut (maybe legs or stomach area).Or it means she didn't. All up the listener. They obviously won't explore that as they won't take rwby to that dark of a show as the writers are soft on those controversial topics

Can’t be a Weiss song without starting with a sad piano then getting some kickass drums and guitar at the end.

​@@shadowspector3611 Self inflicted pain doesn't always mean physical harm. Mental, spiritual, and emotional anguish can be just as destructive. And it's dastardly because it doesn't leave noticeable scars, but the person is badly wounded nonetheless. Physical wounds heal by themselves, that what the body does, but mental, spiritual, and emotional wounds have to be overcome with strength and willpower, but some people see that as impossible and remain in that depressed state. They know it's killing them on the inside, but they can't see a reason to get out of it. It almost feels like you're a ship lost in a storm with no chart or compass. You have the rudder in your hand, and you know you have the ability to steer out of it, but without a clear course to steer towards you can't find the strength or will to do it. And so you just remain adrift, lost in the storm until, eventually, it becomes too late and you sink into the despair. Whether you sink or sail depends on you, and whether or not you have the will and determination to sail out of the storm and turmoil and make for the clear waters beyond.

I think this explains why Weiss was such a jerk in season one. All she knew was hate and bitterness, and that's what came out of her. She didn't know right from wrong, and Ruby helped her get through her hard times.

You're definitely not wrong, to me at least, this song feels like it's (for lack of a better word) "set" after the Fall of Beacon and Weiss has been dragged back to Atlas against her will, basically, after finally beginning to find her true self for the first time and moving beyond the caricature Jacques and Atlas society tried to mold her into...only to then be forced *back* into that situation scenario again and having to deal with the resulting pressures trying to force her back into that mold she's only just started to break away from.

I think this also explains why she was against John ( I can't spell his name) so much during the first few episodes, because he knew who Weiss was, but Pyrah? Nope, don't know who the hell you are, but nice to meet you. Combine this with Weiss story regarding her parents and it makes complete sense why she outright rejected him at each turn.

I always say that Ruby is the little sister that Weiss needed/ wanted when she was growing up. The friendship between Ruby and Weiss is pure joy, it’s what made Weiss her own person and why she’s my favorite character

I love how most of Weiss songs start out sounding fancy and probably one of those songs she’d sing for the rich class of Atlas but then they evolve into a punk song

Weiss gets all the best themes. It's only natural, she has the best story material.

The line from mirror mirror “I’m the loneliest of all”, line from this life is mine “a part of me that’s scared I might be wrong. That I can’t be strong”, and this song “looking in the mirror, I see someone that I don’t recognize.” Really show how Weiss doesn’t have an easy life, especially her past. All she could do is stay strong and forget about all the trouble her family causes. Once you think of it, she really was the loneliest. Her father only cared about himself and the SDC, her mother would always be alone and drinking, Winter is always busy with huntress stuff and she isn’t really the company type unless you want to be criticized, and Whitely just wants to follow his father’s footsteps so that just leaves Weiss, alone, and it’s very sad....

I haven't listened to this song in a couple years. It hurts so bad but I love it. This song describes what I'm going through right now. I feel so isolated. Hate myself. Nothing I love brings me joy anymore. I've tried so hard to fit in that I don't recognize myself anymore. And this song just encapsulates that so much and this proves to me that I'm not alone, it's not normal to feel like this but it's ok to recognize it and find help. I've started therapy and hopefully the next time I listen to this, it will be a memory of where I was and where I am then.

Ok 3rd favorite RWBY song. Well, any song for Weiss makes me want to cry, not sure why. Probably the piano and the lyrics. Casey did great on this one! My favorite line is “looking in the mirror, I see someone that I don’t recognize.”

I absolutely love this song, mostly because I relate to the lyrics, but also bc it sounds like a battle and the voice acting is so frickin good !

This song is so much more powerful with Ice Queendom as reference. I wouldn't be surprised if Jeff and Casey were told about the basics of the plot of the anime all those years ago.

Jeff and Casey have only gotten better. I’m so happy their music has been with us through this whole journey.

Not the comment section I was expecting to see on such a beautiful song... If Casey said Weiss doesn't self-harm, then that's that. No doubt she knows the meanings behind these songs better than any of us ever could. But "self-inflicted pain" is always going to resonate with people who've hurt themselves, so of course some people would interpret the line that way. Some people here got _way_ too offended by the idea of a character having an unhealthy coping mechanism.

Self-harm does come in many forms. Mental, emotional, physical. It's very nuanced, not so black and white. When i first started RWBY as a kid and hated Weiss initially, i realized that it was because i saw a lot of myself in her, a lot of parallels in our stories. I love Weiss now because she's so complex, and despite everything shes been through, she grew around her trauma and grief. I havent watched the most recent volume yet, but i'm gonna rectify that. Anyways; i love Weiss so much and her character because she showed me from a young-ish age that your grief and trauma do lead to unhealthy coping mechanisms sometimes, and that falling into those bad habits don't mean you're weak or a bad person. She showed me that you can overcome your unhealthy coping mechanisms, that trauma and grief don't have to ruin your future happiness too. Your trauma isn't your fault and it's unfair, but you have the tools to learn to live alongside it instead of letting it consume you. So yeah, thats my take on this, sorry for the ramble dhfhdkdh

Oh also, you are so right about the resonating lyrics and people offended by the idea of a character with unhealthy coping mechanisms. I dont know if that stems from the expectations of perfection, but i think its important to see characters who do have unhealthy coping mechanisms and to see them work past them and moving on to healthier ways of coping. Representation matters. You worded it well :)

I feel bad for Weiss. She may be a spoiled brat from the beginning but she doesn't deserve this kind of fate. I often suffer isolation, can hardly make any friends and keep them, all-cause of some unintended mistakes I keep making.

This song definitely relates to the latest episode of RWBY Volume 9. 😢🥀💔 Weiss’ song wasn’t only a story about her… it was for her broken beloved.

Anyone but me think that everything that happened on Weiss’s 10th birthday was a direct result of Nick Schnee’s death? Like after Nick died Jacques didn’t even need to pretend to be a loving family man anymore because there was no one around to take the company from him anymore so he just let his true colors show at the first available opportunity. I think “Liars and pretenders only seek to reach their ends” may partially be referring to Jacques

Honestly while this is a Weiss, song, this is a song that actually works for Ironwood as well. From how he was at the start of the volume to how he was at the end of vol 8.

This song really hits hard.... Guess I can relate to Weiss in some ways

ThatKaitoDan If not for the second half, this easily would have been my favorite Weiss song, though it is still my favorite trailer song, even with the second half being shaky and initially difficult to follow. The drums and guitar were rather unnecessary and I'll prolly just listen to the trailer version, which is the first half and the part at the end sand the extra instruments. I do still like the song overall tho.

This Is Why I Love Weiss’ Songs! Seriously, these songs fit *so well* like, the vocals in the beginning are more ghostly than most of her songs, except Mirror Mirror, which fits chronologically too seeing as this was her before she went to beacon. And as her songs progress it goes from “Why am I like this” to “Why are you/others like this” and it shows her gaining more confidence in herself. It totally works that most of her progression as a character happens in the songs because she is a singer, it’s all just so genius. I wrote way too much for this... and I could write more. I’m a musical theater nerd I’m all about these meanings in the music, sorry

I love how the songs explore that Weiss is looking in the mirror throughout most of the series, but what she sees in there is constantly changing.

As i look at the lyrics...it shows perfectly how you feel when you're suffering from depression. You don't even recognize yourself in the mirror because of how empty you feel. Part with conflict also cilcks. Most people that suffer from depression do have a conflict between giving up or trying to fight back. My conclusion? Weiss may be either suffering from depression and be really good at hiding it from her team or the song is targeted towards people who are depressed to let them know that they have hope? I know i sound like an idiot.

I've been struggling with depression for the past 8 to 10 years, I'd say that Weiss has juste become very good at hiding her depression, like me. Her familial environement was a perfect combination of all factors, resulting in low confidence that you hide by looking over-confident everytime you can, low self esteem that you compensate for by trying to alwas be the best at everything you do, and obviously a depression that's been here for so long that you can't even know what is yourself and what is caused by the depression. There were some days I was afraid to loose my depression cause I felt like without it I would just be an empty shell. That's the "A stranger to my heart has filled my mind" part. If the depression was here long enough and no one seemed to care in her family, she probably have made herself a "facade personnality" that deals with the world an make her look "normal" while fighting her inner battles by herself.

So now the order is: The Path to Isolation Mirror Mirror Mirror Mirror pt. 2 This Life is Mine It's My Turn Did I miss anything? Any objections?

Renee Salinas i'd say it's my turn before this life is mine? At the end of this life is mine it sounds like she's definitely gone, while it's my turn it sounds like she took her decision. Or in a way, this life is mine is a summary of all this, it shows her evolution. It begins with the pain, then the hesitation, then she opens her eyes, takes her decision, and finally becomes herself and goes her own way, showing how much she hates her father. So I'd put the "summary" ( i dont like the word summary for a song so incredible, but i cant find a better one...you see what i mean) after it's my turn. What do you think?

Nalo Interesting way of looking at it, but I've always seen This Life is Mine & It's My Turn as the independence song and confrontation song respectively. Like, in TLiM, Weiss has finally broken away after she gets the idea in MMpt2. But in IMT, she's already independent and finally telling Jacques off. I suppose they could be seen as interchangeable though, seeing as they both give Jacques the middle finger and the only real difference is that It's My Turn isn't a "Mirror Mirror" song. Either way, they're all friggin amazing songs!

Personally I think This Life is Mine comes after It’s My Turn because in This Life is Mine is her *directly* saying these things to her father (and with that I mean she’s actually singing it.) Even if It’s My Turn could theoretically come after This Life is Mine, storywise it wouldn’t make sense. On a side note in It’s My Turn Weiss says: ‘the day I’ve waited for is drawing near’ indicating this is direct build up to This Life is Mine But that’s just the way how I see it. These songs pretty much walk hand-in-hand.

This likely is influenced by her family, namely father and brother, along with other people she's met like Henry. It starts out that this is the case, but after long enough, it turns into paranoia as you start assuming _everyone_ is like this. True friendships become almost impossible to form since you're always just waiting for them to betray you even if they never do.

@@micah6772 lmao HUH? Were we watching the same show here? Jaune was way worse in volume 1. He's a MAIN character, of course he's gonna take screen time. He has in fact improved on character development since volume 1. When he was first introduced, he was nothing but a boy who faked his way into beacon with little to no combat skills whatsoever. The whole reason why he became stronger was because of Pyrrah. He's important to the storyline just as much as team RWBY is. He's meant to be a strategist, not a fighter, yet he can still hold up on his own. Please explain to me how the episode with the Pyrrah statue made him a progressively "worse character."

Weiss is probably the most relatable character, she got the best character development and overall feels like the most heroic and selfless of the four.

I've been waiting nearly 10 months for this. I am not disappointed.

That one dislike is Weiss’s father. 😹😹😹😹 Edit: I see a lot of people thinking about the ‘self-inflicted pain’ and I think Weiss is talking about the fact that she let herself obey her father so she could keep her title as heiress or because she just didn’t want to be met with her father since it’s clear that she doesn’t like her father at all.

I'm glad that Weiss is happy now, and she doesn't need her 'mirror' to be happy anymore

What is it that was so dear that she lost? When I listen I think that it’s maybe her mother kinda removing herself and becoming an alcoholic. I feel like this song is like a prequel to the other mirror mirror songs since the lyrics sound like they’re saying that the person she was at the beginning of the show or before she went to Beacon wasn’t the real her.

I'm thinking it's either her mother falling at the bottom of a bottle or her sister leaving the house. I'm assuming these two people were the dearest to her heart and she lost both of them in a way.

I always thought it was more non real things if that makes sense. Like She lost her self respect, her family name and other things because of her father. She was likely friends with people but then found out that they were using her from the lyrics about people pretending to be friends, plus her mother hitting rock bottom by drinking, finding out that her father married her mother only because of her name ect extra.

I was thinking it was about family in general. In the beginning she gives descriptions on what her family used to be like: warmth, comfort, etc.. all of that disappeared. There was a time that there is some family get together until something happened. Like the family dinner Weiss talked about, or it could be something else. After that, there's no love that could fill the void between such distant family members. A place where Weiss can call home.

Her voice is getting so strong, it’s amazing to hear how much it grows over the years

I know it seems like it’s a rule that there must be a Weiss song in every volume, but damn, this continues to deepen my love her for her more and more.

@@ryancroy Full honesty, I know they confirmed it’s about mental scars, but I am totally ok with them revealing Weiss did self harm, I know it sounds morbid, but it would be great characterization in my opinion

@@Breidablik06 Me too.. I write a lot of fan-fics with Ruby and Weiss self harming. It may be sad, dark, ect. But it would make their character so much more interesting.

Ali BabaAhmed I wouldn't be surprised if it came before even Mirror Mirror pt.1. In this one, Weiss is still kinda shocked at what she's becoming, but in Mirror Mirror, she comes off as already content to me.

It's like the 'prologue', for say, of the Weiss arc. It's about how she deteriorates mentally, probably due to her mother withdrawing and her father forcing his control over her. She starts questioning herself and shows more self doubt and unconfidence as the song progresses.

Otherwise, it COMPLETELY negates the line "Mirror Mirror now we're DONE" in This Life is Mine, so I agree.

Exactly everything in weiss's song that Jeff Williams composes. Is everything that goes on in my mind and heart. I'm 17 now, I've been listening since I was 11. Ever since "red like roses" came out. I don't know how to explain everything to my parents if it weren't for his songs. I thank him for everything. His talent, beauty, passion, and loyalty. I don't know where I would be.

This OST is phenomenal!

Can we real quick appreciate how far Weiss has come in her character growth? Jeff and Casey did an amazing job conveying this through sound. Just listening to her songs from The Path to Isolation to This Life is Mine is enough to show how much better she is as a person to others, to herself. Amazing job Rooster Teeth for writing such a great character and Jeff and Casey for telling her story in song.

Man, every time I hear a new RWBY song I just have to drop everything I'm doing for the day, keep listening to the new ones even if I didn't mean to, and keep listening to it for A WHILE. I mean already heard this one, but not the FULL version, I'm now shook in the literal sense tbh.

Welp, when I first started watching RWBY, I'd never have guessed Weiss would be the character I'd relate to the most... but well... Awesome song!

I wonder when volume 6 will come out. Edit: Comes out in November Another Edit: Comes out on October 27 NOW as of what I heard. Also, because of KZread these days, RWBY will only shown on the RoosterTeeth website.

Ive always found weiss's songs sort of therapeutic and relaxing. Despite being very fast and sort of upbeat, i can still relax and fall asleep to it. Its very odd, and i dont know why.

This is definitely the darkest RWBY song. None of the edgier songs come CLOSE to hitting the things in Path to Isolation.

Chiaki Nanameme I mean....it implies a loss of identity, self pain, near suicidal thoughts....of course it's the darkest. What makes it so dark is that it's EXTREMELY subtle however.

Maybe it's because the way she act and the way she is are conflicted and that is destroying her.

Ludmila Champagne That is definitely true. Although many people are stating that she's been wearing long sleeves for quite some time now. I highly doubt this took place in the series,but perhaps before the battle with the Knight? Though with how many of the Mirror Mirror songs are littered with symbolism,I can definitely see why it might not be literal. Honestly,this song tells me that Weiss is still not telling us something. It's just too suspicious for a song like this to be released after This Life Is Mine took care of this specific part of her character arc.

"A stranger to my heart has filled my mind." -That's pretty deep man.

I like how all of Weiss' songs talk about a mirror.

Weissolation intensifies

Honestly, this song (for me, at least) applies to anyone struggling with depression. This song has powerful and poignant lyrics that capture the experience of living with depression.

So pretty!! The art is fantastic too

This is the one song in Volume V that I needed to have the full song for! Thank you Flynt!
