Well, the shot in pike & shot formations essentially provided a handy, longer ranged Pike. The flintlock provided reliability in all weather conditions, and shot gradually replaced pike in formation. The bayonet ultimately superseded pike & shot. Even today, small arms are largely the same principle of poking holes.

If you visit Harper's Ferry, WV... they have a pretty decent set of exhibits showing some of the armory spears still kept by The US Army (at the time) which John Brown planned to distribute amongst most of the enslaved people of the region when the news got out about what he was doing. Frederick Douglas reportedly told John Brown his idea would not work because they would not rise up near Maryland because it was simply a different type of slavery. The type which Frederick Douglas came from, himself. It would be General Lee himself who put John Brown's rebellion down at Harper's Ferry. You can stand in the small building like a fire station that they made their own final stand. The plan was to get the arms, distribute them among the rebelling slaves and take the capital. But few know how much he relied on spears for most of his expected army.

I think the key distinction there is one on one. I may be wrong but as far as I am aware the spear was the king of the battlefield, not so much duels. I think it becomes exponentially more difficult for the sword and shield when they don't have room to maneuver due to comrades on left and right of them, and a full line of spears that aren't easily out-maneuvered.

@@thricemindblown7883 Most swords were primarily sidearms. Secondary weapons carried by basically everyone regardless of their specific battlefield role (though some would carry knives or various other things instead). Pistols later took this role too (hence why they're also called sidearms). Your spear troops? If they (or you) had the money for it and the time to train them? They carry swords. Same with your archers. Your knights? They're probably using a polearm of some sort but they're carrying a sword as a backup. Samurai? Mostly archers and/or spear troops... still carried swords. Prior to the invention of the bayonet, gun troops carried swords. Officers? Carried swords and then eventually pistols with no 'primary' weapon because their 'primary weapon' is commanding their troops, they only situations where they need a primary weapon is when anyone else needs a side arm (though sometimes they carry rifles anyway so as to blend in with the troops more and thus get sniped less). It was just not that common for soldiers to use swords as their primary weapon (though there were certain swords used by certain troop types in certain eras that were, indeed, used that way), but they were Very common secondaries.

@@laurencefraser Seeing you lay it out like that I'm rethinking the sword as the lord/gentlemen weapon. Maybe it's more that the sword is a good back-up for all sorts. And, the lord/gentlemen's primary weapon is other people with weapons.
