Hacksaw Ridge was during the Battle of Okinawa, the last major invasion before the Atomic Bomb was dropped. My Dad was a Navy Corpsman with the Marines at the Battle of Okinawa. The Japaneese were really brutal in the Battle of Okinawa, because it was so close to Mainland Japan.

Marley, your face said it all when the Skipper was killed. It sort of reminded me of a boy that was good friends with my sister (she was a cheerleader in highschool and double dated with one of her cheerleader friends & the boy). It was right around the winter of 67 when my sister got a call telling her that the boy was killed in Vietnam. I swear she had the same look on her face. I wish I could remember his name but as a teen back in the day I rarely paid attention to other boys.

Hacksaw ridge took place during the battle of Okinawa, but portrayed US Army troops, were as Marines are Navy infantry.

Marlery you are correct John want too get back in the fight, I think the next three episodes will be tough. Great Reactions one through seven. Hacksaw Ridge was on Okinawa, the Army and Marines landed on opposite sides of the island, Marines fought to the north and Army fought south eventually combined forces. Hacksaw was an Army operation.

It’s really hard to over state just how devastating captain ‘ack ack’ haldanes death was for the marines. He was easily on the same level as winters from BoB. Many of the men who served under him agreed that things would never be the same with their command after his death. Lt “Hillbilly’s death would also be the breaking point for the hardened gunny Haney. This was likely because the younger officers like Eddie are given a senior more experienced sergeant like Haney to help them out, so Haney most likely felt a responsibility towards hillbilly and he failed at keeping him safe. None of the other men judged Haney for breaking but it did demoralize them pretty hard as they thought if he couldn’t make it without breaking then they didn’t stand a chance. At the end of the episode Haney gives sledge his zippo lighter. Sledge would keep that lighter for the rest of his life and eventually pass it on to his sons. The first day of the invasion of peleliu was on Easter Sunday. This fact would affect sledge immensely for the rest of his life. Sledge was a deeply religious man but according to his family he struggled to sit through full church services without having to leave from breaking down. Easter sundays were especially hard for him as he couldn’t attend church service without full on bursting into tears according to his wife.

"This one was tough. I feel like I say that every episode." Yeah. And, it doesn't get better. We're starting to get to the tough ones now.

Eugene’s company, King Co. 3rd battalion 5th marine regiment landed with 235 men they took 64% casualties leaving if I remember correctly 86 men and I think 2-3 officers(going off memory) . My great grandfather and grandfathers company landed with about the same and took the same amount in the 1/7th. Altogether the entire 1st Marine Division lost roughly 46% of their men in the entire battle

After you're done with Pacific, should check out another military miniseries called "Generation Kill", a show in the same vein as Band Of Brothers and The Pacific, focused on a Marine group during the '03 invasion into Iraq

Eugene Sledge and Robert Leckie wrote memoirs about their experiences in the Pacific. This series is based on their books and a few others. Helmet for my Pillow by Leckie With the Old Breed by Sledge

After the Japanese lost Saipan, they knew the war was lost. Pelelieu, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa were so bloody because the goal of the Japanese changed from fighting to protect territory to fighting to kill as many Americans as possible in order to have us grow weary of the war and get us to negotiated peace rather than an unconditional surrender.😮

Hi Marley, the terrain of peleliu is somewhat similar to Okinawa, which is where hacksaw Ridge is located. Both have a central Ridgeline that runs in the middle of the island. You will see Okinawa later in the series. The problem with Peleliu is that it was a useless battle in that the airfield on the island was never important to the allied advance, as other islands taken around the same time were better located to be of value. That is why it was such a a tragedy, too many men died for nothing.
