I only wish that you had gone a little further in the film until you got to the memorial for the real men who died in the battle. Rod Lurie, if it is indeed you, thank you for making this movie. You captured the Army in an authentic way I've never felt from any other film (to include Blackhawk Down), along with Afghanistan, and it brought me back. It isn't easy viewing, but it should be necessary viewing. Even now, as I sit comfortably at home, I think of the men and women who are currently out there, conducting missions, and how many people here don't give it a thought or know what happens over there at almost a daily basis; how the heights and depths of humanity are witnessed by these men and women. I agree, I wish they went further and showed the men who gave their all.

This movie was great, I had to pause because I couldn’t take it all in.

This is a true story, several of the soldiers who were actually there were involved in the film, including Medal of Honor recipient Ty Carter, who was a technical advisor, and Daniel Rodriguez, who actually portrays himself in the film.

As a former U.S. Army soldier, this was one of the most authentic depictions of the Army I've seen on screen other than documentaries. Obviously, some things were embellished and some corners were cut to depict some things for entertainment value, but the comradery, depiction of rank structure and how good/bad leadership has lasting effects, and language were spot on. To clarify the situation per your request at the end: their higher unit's primary mission (if I remember correctly) was to support the construction of a major road in the region which would connect Nuristan to the rest of the economy. The idea was that the more connected the region was to the rest of Afghanistan's central government (Kabul), the easier it would be to provide security and take away Taliban / Al Qaeda's influence on the region. As you saw in the movie, the dirt roads were nearly impossible and dangerous to use. This meant they needed outposts to help establish patrols / "key leader engagements" with villages to secure areas / get the local population to buy into the idea of building this road. At the same time, they were supposed to enforce laws that prevented smuggling of illegal/controlled goods (lumber, drugs, explosive materials such as fertilizer, and weapons which typically helps fund/support the Taliban and Al Qaeda). Of course this broad mission set proved impossible for Infantrymen and Scouts who have been trained to mainly close in and destroy the enemy instead of being a police force or to serve as civil affairs and conduct nation building.

I know you in the Army but u should really try Generation Kill. Most accurate depiction of military/marines in my opinion

Ammo has to be stored in hardened areas. They should have been better at resupply, but they can’t keep all of it at the guns.

I was at Keating, the ASP was somewhat in the center of the outpost, it was surrounded by layer after layer of sandbags. We still had to run across open ground to supply gunners.

14:18 The guy trying to drag Thompsons body to safety is the real Rodriguez. I can't even imagine how hard it mustve been to reenact the moment of your buddy's death and your attempts at trying to save him.

The most realistic Afghanistan war movie to date. Did a tour in 11-12, and was stunned how well this was done

After reading the book ‘Red Platoon’ I was eagerly waiting for this movie to come out and I was not disappointed. Unfortunately though due to COVID the movies original release date got cancelled and they eventually had to settle for a less eventful release and I don’t think the movie got the publicity it deserves

The mission changed from hunting terrorists to peacekeeping/nation building. Those kind of things don't exactly have a good history of success. In Afghanistan, they did put out a lot of remote outposts. Problem was they might have a platoon trying to secure a very large area, one that would probably take a battalion or more. Attacks would happen even against a larger force but those smaller units made such attacks a bit safer for the enemy. Not only hitting the outposts but also resupply units, medivacs, etc. Meanwhile the rules of engagement were written by politicians and generals with ambitions who were far away from the fighting. It would really stink being a soldier in the last 15 years with enemies in the front and the rear.

The reason the ammo is in a separate place is to keep it protected from the obvious targets. Store it in a hardened protected bunker also so that it it doesn't get destroyed or result in a big explosion.

Civilians will never understand.

The amount of bureaucracy in an active warzone is a lot more than you'd expect.

Sheesh, so sensitive. Must be a POG. And I don’t speak for the whole Army but my personal experience, the Marines that worked with my unit really did look up to us. Granted, maybe because they’ve never seen such high tech tactical gears(washable crayola markers). For those two heroes you mentioned, doesn’t really bother me. I mean it sucks that we had to lose people looking for Bowe but hey, what are you gonna do. Lastly, of course my girlfriend would know your favorite color, she cooks your meals every day. She’s your wife you silly goose.

The youtuber "The Cynical Historian" did a good job analyzing this movie if you wanna know more. I think he was even deployed in afghanistan at the same time.

The reason air support was stalled during the Battle of Kamdesh was probably weather. I've seen that happen during my time in Iraq in multiple occasions

I’m real life, the compounds charges didn’t detonate and the base had to later be destroyed via AC-130. The soldiers called it a last F-U from the COP

God. How did he not have PTSD on set?

I don't know about the dog part, I highly doubt most units would be so cavalier about executing a member of their team like that. I don't know the real story so maybe it happened, but that just flies in the face of every other canine unit and US army attitude I've heard of. EDIT: The nice people in the comments have explained that this was not a military dog.

That wasn’t a trained canine is was just a stray dog they kept on base for morale. I agree that if it had been part of the unit they wouldn’t have been so cavalier about killing it.

If that was a military canine, A) it wouldn’t go near a person, let alone bite them, without being ordered, and B) every one of those soldiers would’ve had their weapons raised on the afghans the second there was a scream and any sign of a “scuffle” for lack of a better term between the Afghan and the dog…that dog had no vest, no military insignia, not even a collar! At no point in the movie did that dog show ANY signs of being trained to any extent for ANYTHING. Instead, it clearly shows the dog being treated as a pet by some of the soldiers. The way you worded your comment makes me assume you have a decent level of common sense and probably some real basic knowledge of American military/policing, which is why I’m genuinely baffled that you would watch the movie and be under the foolish impression that the dog was anything but a stray dog that the soldiers took in as a pet. I don’t mean this to be insulting. If your comment seemed like you were just one of 99% in the comments who have no idea what they are talking about, I wouldn’t bother replying.

Honestly, who puts a military base at the BOTTOM of a hill?

Armies will try to secure the high ground but, even formidable ones don't have the soldiers and resources to do that always and as a result you have commanders who excuse that by saying for example: 'our superior firepower or technology will make up for that.' which it can under some circumstances, but not all.
