The Fury tank is a real WW2 Sherman tank, loaned by Bovington Tank Museum in the UK. It is on display there and is regularly driven in displays. The German Tiger tank in the film is also the only operational one in the world also at Bovington and is brought out and driven yearly on their Tiger day

@coldflame… hey man, I have a question you might can answer you seem pretty knowledgeable. In the movie, was the Sherman with the longer barrel and the flame suppressor on it a Mark IV Firefly? I’ve never seen it depicted in any movies, but I know the British and Italians used them quite a bit in World War II. I think instead of the regular 75 mm shell they used 76.5 mm high velocity 17 pound shells to great effect.

The Americans never used the Firefly because they didn’t want a foreign gun on their tanks. The tank used by Fury is a 76mm gun which would give them somewhat of a chance against German tanks.

@@jacobninedorf4121late reply I know The tank in the movie is a m4a3e8 which were nicknamed easy eights. It did have a 76mm gun (but not the gun used in the firefly) it also has better suspension armour and was all around a improvement over earlier varients. It was so good they kept using them well after ww2 and it was still in service during the Korean war.

Yep, that scene around the table with the guys losing it, that's a preview of millions of households in the U.S in the late 40s and 50s, and why all those stereotypical 50s dads in old shows were so messed up and had messed up, dysfunctional relationships with their kids. Because you can't go through what these vets have gone through and then come back to a civilian world that is so completely different, where nobody except other messed up vets know what you went through and experienced and had to do, and just switch right back to civilian mode. Especially when you have trauma you can't process or talk about to anyone and the people who are supposed to be closest and most important to you can't even comprehend it.

The German Tiger tanks were vastly superior to the US Sherman tanks. The armor on the Tiger tank was thinner in the rear, so the Shermans had to get a point blank shot from the rear. Made things alot harder. My Grandpa was infantry in WWII and told me when I joined the Army to "Stay away from the tanks cuz everybody shoots at the tanks."

  • @Tabaskospecial

Vastly superior is a bit of an overstatement. There was a true Tigerphobia on the Allies part. The reality was that the tiger while a technological marvel suffered from being a bit over engineered and major maintenance issues. The Sherman was a far more reliable tank with obviously the numbers to match. Later models of the Sherman such as the firefly or like Fury in this movie possessed guns that were capable of penetrating a tiger from the front. From a Marine infantryman to your father please thank him for his service and I completely agree with him.

Not at those ranges in this movie. At the ranges in this scene in the movie even the original under gunned shermans could have killed this Tiger from the front - or if not killed it those hits would have blown the front armour off the driver area (plenty of tiger tank crews wrote about driving around with that flat front armour plate blown off or cracked open - a bad design fault). It is truly a mindbogglingly silly scene. Whoever wrote and made that scene knew literally nothing about WW2 tanks. Its actually really cringey - like watching a docu-drama movie about say, Niki Lauda in which his f1 car actually flies. Its that bad. All sherman guns could kill a Tiger, from the front, in gun range - about 1km. The Tiger effective gun range started around 2.5km. The Tiger’s advantage was vastly superior range and optical sighting systems. The up gunned shermans reduced the Tiger’s gun range advantage but the allies never matched the german’s Zeiss optical systems. The british firefly variant and the up gunned 76mm version also suffered from the problem that the recoil kick and blast would delay the next shot due to blast effects. But up close these tanks were an even match one on one, depending on crew skill and circumstances. At the ranges in the tiger scene in this movie a low deflection hit on the Tiger would be instantly fatal, anywhere on the vehicle, which makes it hilarious that theyre trying to shoot it in the arse. Its like they got their tank info from the video game Battlefield 5. Of course, what follows in the final scene is even worse. A stationary tank facing infantry is basically a dead tank. In reality a fight like that would have lasted 5 minutes. This movie is really cringe. Star Wars is more realistic.

In actual combat, the Tiger would have turned to a ten-thirty or two-thirty position, turret facing the enemy. This would have maximized their armor protection. The crews were trained in this maneuver. The Tiger main gun had superior range, and they would have remained stationary, methodically knocking out the Shermans as they advanced. The Tiger would not have engaged the Shermans up close, due to their greater speed and maneuverability. But that would have made for a very different (and shorter) movie.

A common military tactic is to use smoke to conceal retreat, and sometimes to obscure the enemy's view during an attack. Real world they could have hit that Tiger tank with a bunch of WP rounds (quick smoke between them and the Tiger) and then hauled ass away from it, or at least tried. Generally you don't want to use smoke when you are in a fixed position, as they did from the tank when they had to go outside, because attackers can then get close without your seeing them; such as when the German soldiers were able to get close enough to use the Panzerfausts. In a real world fight there is often so much dust and smoke from vehicles, munitions and fires that you can't see much anyway.

My great uncle was in the second world war in the canadian army, one of his most frightening stories was when he was pushing up to the next town with what he said to be around 15 to 20 tanks. When they were around a few 100 meters away from the town they got ambushed by German tanks, 10 total he said. It took them 5½ hours to destroy those tanks and all they had left was 4 tanks. When he went to the town he said his stomach droped when he saw that was shooting at them. 1 king tiger (Tiger II), 2 tiger 1s, 2 panther tanks, and 5 panzer IV's. But when he saw that there was a king tiger his stomach droped even more, realizing that this fight was completely in the enemy's favor and they somehow survived. He said that besides D-day, that was the worst encounter he ever had. Info: another tank fight scene in the movie it's the tiger one. Think of that but you can't kill it at all unless you actually hit the back of the tank. That's the tiger II.

They called Sherman's Ronson's like the lighter because one hot piece of Shrapnel and the fuel tank would explode. I am quite disappointed in our country during WW2 for designing such a cheap tank as if we were to treat our American soldiers lives as just as cheap and expendable as the Soviets treated the lives of their mass human wave forces that got cut down on the eastern front.

@@maxpeck7382, in actual reality, the m4 sherman was great, wasn't an armored bathtub (despite somewhat resembling one) and had excellent reliability with great crew survivability, the truth is that while early models of the sherman were ill-suited for combat against heavy tanks the later models were perfectly equipped to fight beasts such as the tiger (i.e the jumbo and firefly or even the m4a2e8 fury tank presented in the reaction, which boasted a powerful 76 mm gun capable of frontally penetrating tigers with considerable ease) ww2 has lots, and lots of mysticism, one being that of the "german superiority" mainly when it came to armored vehicle alike, despite the fact that the overwhelming majority of the late war german tanks were modified versions of the panzer iv (one that was pretty much comparable to a sherman and not as powerful as a tiger given they were designs dating back to the late 30s) and even the big german tanks were often rare occurrences, to finish off, no, the sherman was not cheap, while not as expensive as the over-engineered beasts such as the tiger and panther tanks, they were built to high standards unlike the soviet tanks for example. funnily enough america did have a beast of their own, going by the name of m26 pershing, one that was on par with the german big bads and was arguably more capable in certain areas.

May I suggest another WW2 tank movie? T-34 is a really cool tank movie. While not perfect (it is a movie after all), it is a bit more realistic than Fury in terms of tank combat. And for those who have seen it, to be fair I didn't say it was *entirely* realistic

The SS German soldier that left Norman alive had his own reasons. Not sure but several possible reasons. Mine are: 1) Drafted/Conscripted to fight at such a young age with little or no combat experience. Aside from that, he may not be fully committed to their cause/ideology. Meaning he wasn’t mentally driven deep enough to make him a fanatic patriot. Given it’s end the of war already, he probably only a had short period of military training. 2) Thinks that Norman had seen too much horror & that they may share the same feeling. Both just want peace. 3) Having a pure heart compared to the rest of his fellow servicemen. I quote “True courage is about knowing not when to take a life but when to spare one.” - Gandalf It just reminded of that scene so much after seeing that. 4) Didn’t see him as threat cuz he thinks he’s no soldier. Not a trained professional one so to speak. Can tell if you know body language. To clarify body language, I’ve seen a lot especially from FBI stuff does make a difference. How many times has a soldier seen a face like that? Just like in Saving Private Ryan. Why did that German spared Upham’s life? He just killed his friend or brother-in-arms while he remain idle & just cried. From my perspective, he’s not a threat to the German soldier which is why he spared him & maybe he knew that pain is making Upham suffer for things he can’t do like saving his buddy. Or due to him being a non threat, he isn’t worth killing. After all, even some officers & soldiers believe in honor. Lastly, the German (in Saving Pvt Ryan) didn’t look like or act like a rookie in any way. Years of experience for sure. Not everyone is meant for war nor is born for war. Same could be said with Norman. Again, it’s a lot to adjust especially if it involves killing. You do this, there’s no turning back. Sometimes, we’re forced to be someone we’re trying not to be. Consider both aspects of that individual & you’ll see clearly.

There’s a reason why tanks don’t go first into a city, town etc. Tanks clear the way for infantry. Infantry protect the tanks. It’s a work in tandem. As far as the knocking boots scene, you took it the entire wrong way. The tank battle. Sherman’s we’re not as good as panzer or tigers. Best way to kill a panzer, tiger or king tiger was from the rear. Germans didn’t expect anything to be alive to get to their rears, that’s why they had little armor back there. Also, the reason to stay and fight was because the u.s. troops were on their way. They were hoping to hold out until reinforcements arrived and they would all make it out of there alive.

Also, fury would have been dead before 160 Germans died, did you see the amount of panzerfausts, (tank fists) the SS were carrying? Those would not just go through and kill one man, those weapons would blow up ammo and, if not, throw spall, (white hot shrapnel from the armor) into everyone in that tank. The Panzerfaust’s shaped charge would make easy work of anywhere on an IS-2, forget about an Easy Eight sherman stopping that.

The only advantage the Sherman's had was speed due to their lighter weight and smaller size. They were easier to handle in tight urban areas. However they were called Brunson lighters because when hit their gasoline tanks would explode and many a crew burned up in them.

Based off of a shit book by a man who was never a tanker, Death Traps by Belton Cooper, universally panned as being shit. American Sherman crews had a 3% death rate, compared to 17% for an infantry soldier. But the movie does get the hopelessness and despair of war right.

The intentions with this movie are good but the historical details are terrible - especially the bit with the Tiger tank. A Tiger could kill a Sherman tank from over 2 kilometres and there would be nothing a sherman could do about that but at the range in this movie a sherman could easily penetrate a Tiger. And even so the Tiger commander, who in 1945 would be a heavy battalion tank ace many times over, closes the range. I mean, seriously? That Tiger would have been dead in the first 30 seconds. Then it gets even sillier. But as a veteran the high point of this movie - and the reason i love it - is when Coonhouse grabs Norman after Emma’s death and screams ‘you feel it?’. Yep - the fury of war. I feel you.

This movie puts u in Norman's shoes, and takes u on his arc! Germany had much beter equipment than the allies. Better handguns, the had even AK style rifles, but not yet mass produced, better shoulder fired rockets, better tanks better planes. If they hadnt attacked Russia, and if the americans had won the battle of the Bulge, no way we win this war. Because they already had drone planes, were already working on mass producing jet fighters, and would have been nuclear by the end of 45. Sadly, Norman's prediction for Emma came true. best job i ever had means, i love u guys. Norman played the child in the great remake movie,3.10 to Yuma!! sort of based on a true story, the last battle. Type in here, Audie Murphy in WW2!
