    The way Outlast explores the manipulation of the human psyche is fascinating to me. It really shows just how fragile and twisted most people can be. Psychopaths, religious zealots, scientific geniuses, it's so enthralling to see just how far Murkoff is willing to go for financial and scientific gain, and how damn good they are at their job. They're like The Umbrella Corporation's big brother.

    Donald Ewen Cameron is also a big inspiration for this game series, his psychiatric experiments that he did with the CIA were full on torture with the goal of erasing the patient's personality via constant trauma so severe the patient would regress to childhood to escape it, so then a new one could be programmed. His work heavily inspired Milton Friedman in economics with his shock doctrine, and the millitary tactic of shock and awe, which were basically the idea of applying the technique to an entire population.

    I kind of wonder if the grand finale of the Outlast series is finally bringing down Murkoff and giving justice to all that suffered because of it. One constant with each of these games and the comics/stories is that Murkoff always gets away with its atrocities and even though there are people opposing them, it often either doesn’t end well for them or they’re unable to do much damage, often both. So imagine the finale of the series being Murkoff finally being brought down and all the pain and suffering wasn’t in vain

  • @mattmedrala1947

    @mattmedrala1947

    I think things are more optimistic than they might initially seem, at least if the comics are considered. In them, Miles is shown to be an undead superhero who prioritizes Murkoff for his vengeance rather than random innocents, Waylon remains out of Murkoff's grasp, and Blake is implied to become a blind dreamer and to be hooked up to a morphogenic engine at a Murkoff facility, which will likely mean he will cause even more damage than Miles has. I agree that the final game will probably be an apocalyptic showdown between the leaders of Murkoff and a force of rebels led by the Walrider

    @@8johhDepends on what you consider 'grounded', I consider the series as campy and as silly as Metal Gear, especially with the original game's final boss being literally 'nanomachines, son!' A final game that's riffing off of Ozymandius' plan from Watchmen, with Murkoff intending to broadcast their madness signal on a global scale while the Walrider brings the apocalypse down on Murkoff's HQ, would make for an epic finale IMO.

    There are certainly elements of this that are similar to the real MKULTRA - the depatterning and psychic driving experiments done on women in a clinic in Canada run by Dr Ewen Cameron, for example. There was even a sleep room at the clinic, where they would knock people out with drugs and lock an American football helmet to their head, with speakers in it, to try to reprogram people. The process worked in as much as they could remove most of a person's personality - they would use electroshock, sometimes for hours at a time, to erase the personality. The difficulty was imprinting a new one through the use of the helmets in the sleep room, there was something about the subjects that was completely resistant. The stuff at the end with Castro is interesting too - there were several operations against Cuba, some of which were designed to poison Castro (they were going to put a poison in a milkshake that he got on a daily basis, but the pills froze and became useless). There was also an operation which was never carried out to enact the second coming of Christ - a submarine would approach the coast of Cuba and an operative would walk out of the sea dressed in a robe, pretending to be Christ himself! CIA at the time were pretty bonkers, lol.

    Good point about the historical precedent in creating false prophets as a psy-op. Not only does Outlast allude to this with the entire Temple Gate/Knoth cult, but I think Murkoff's grand plan regarding their use of religion as a brainwashing tool is to eventually create a false apocalypse - they will cause mass chaos by using morphogenic broadcasts to make reagents turn berserk, while false 'prophets' will demand the survivors swear loyalty to them or suffer a fate worse than death.

    This could explain the tentacle dude from the second game. The people from Outlast 2 were turning their nightmares into projectors as mentioned in one of the notes meaning both Blake and the cult members were seeing things and sending each other their fears. So maybe Blake was seeing a version of the Skinner Man in the form of the Priest from the second game as a monster with "tendrils" and many hands by his head which could look like the veins we saw before. Holy crap this game has so many layers to its story I love it. EDIT: Forgot I made this comment but I came back to add that the Heretics decorate their body with sticks making them look like the skinner man also. The halo/cross symbols we see in the town have a cross with two circles lined with spikes that again resemble the skinner man style.

  • @karthikbalamurugan7390

    Damn, I never thought of that! I always thought the hands and tounges were meant to symbolize his...uh....."fun time" with Jessica, but honestly the skinner man theory seems equally as likely.

  • @mr.guakacado970

    @mr.guakacado970

    10 ай бұрын

    @@karthikbalamurugan7390 There is a lot in the Second game that I think people took for granted because they thought the game was rushed or lacking in quality. I think it's more that we were missing information that would have made things way more interesting. Example being the Locust from the second game that pushes Blake off a bridge. Completely random and nobody talks about the possibility that it was maybe real? Say it is real and mind you, (another villager claimed to have seen the same swarm right after), this would mean a random ass swarm of bugs picks up a man and throws him. Blake even says that they were quote "Trying to pick him up." I never see anyone talk about this for some reason. I think this is possibly the Walrider from the first game in their bug form from the comics. We know for a fact that he (The ants) destroyed the tower in the end. Is it no stretch to say that Blake ran into it on the bridge and the monster threw him off? All that and I haven't seen any video discussing it. I really hope it gets more attention at some point.

  • @mattmedrala1947

    @mattmedrala1947

    @@mr.guakacado970Yes, that bug swarm was definitely the Walrider - if you turn on night vision, you'll see the bugs spark as though they contain electricity. They attacked Blake, perhaps because he needed to first suffer through the torments of the Scalled before becoming a better host for its needs.

    I just love Outlast worldbuilding in general. It feels both very grounded(given it`s based on so many real life events) and epic. Murkoff definitely could rival Umbrella in its cruelty,but I don`t know if it`ll ever really be brought down. On one hand I`d like that to happen but on the other,it feels too much like an idealistic and happy ending for series as morbid and dark as this.

    Interesting theory regarding Reagent 877 being Simon! Although I personally think he might be another character, either Martin or a potentially unseen one so far - Peacock was mentioned by Marion to have been working for Murkoff and only disappearing relatively recently after being caught whistleblowing (around 6 years prior to the Murkoff Account), presumably the moment when he became a Walrider prototype. My belief that 877 is Martin is because they have a religious connection and 1616 is most definitely Knoth (shoe salesman in Albuquerque who is horny, in debt, and has a fascination with putting metal to his eye.) I think the Skinner Man is an early precursor to the Inner Demon that the cult worship - there are fleshy red tendrils that surround them both, they manifest when people are experiencing psychotic breaks, and as pointed out the heretics' head adornments parallel the Skinner Man's head tendrils AND the Inner Demon's many tongues and arms. I also think that Loutermilch is a reagent and that he was 'triggered' by Murkoff during that fateful night with Blake and Jessica. The themes of the Fun Park and Orphanage tie in heavily with the themes of Blake's school (killing 'bad' children + religious schooling), so it's possible that Loutermilch internalized those teachings and his killer/abuser programming came into effect at St. Sybil. Another connection is the mystery behind Loutermilch's voice being heard in the recordings - it's possible that the 'god' he is addressing is actually Murkoff/Easterman, thanking him for his 'gifts'. Loutermilch's final recording is titled 'I Have Lots of Friends', which could IMO also link to him being tied to Murkoff. Once again, one of the most vile and loathsome characters in the franchise turns out to be the creation of an even greater evil.

    Very good theory, the timeline of Loutermilch's age and the time wherein Sinyala was operational also seem to match, plus the detail of the telephone in St. Sybil and the use of trigger words. Loutermilch's psychology is also strangely childlike and delusional, he sees himself as a rival for Blake, competing with him for Jessica's "love" and is bitter, mocking in tone towards him, as opposed to preying on Jessica for his pleasure he actually seems to be much more emotionally involved and bizarrely infantile in behavior, not quite a typical pedophile. It's also worth noting that the Murkoff logo appears in the static in Blake's school recordings that feature Loutermilch speaking. Funny how Murkoff was able to ruin Blake's life so far in the past with such a distant connection assuming this is true, and he never had any idea. He even saw the place where it all started.

    What I love about this game (besides the game itself) is the fact it fills In previous gaps. Not any gap that needed to be filled but for instance, who was Sullivan knoth before? Why was he like this? As well as everyone else we’ve come across. Also the one that I mostly wanted to mention is 2’s flashes of light and sound. Now that it’s explained as a trigger and or mind influencing device it makes sense whenever it happens that Blake gets more and more insane each time. Not to mention, whenever the tower that makes the flash is destroyed. Blake watches the world get destroyed by the sun but in reality once that facility was destroyed, Blake’s mind was already so destroyed by it that he goes comatose. Without murkoff in his brain filling in the holes, he can’t function anymore. I can’t imagine how screwed half these people really are just from these trials.

    Yeah exactly. And that explains why Lynn wasn’t affected that much mentally, because the heretics pretty much took her to the caves straight away, which was sheltered from the signals. At the end of Outlast 2, Lynn wasn’t seeing anything that Blake was seeing. Which is why she can’t see the ‘baby’ that Blake was holding.

    I think I get what the outlast franchise is about. The themes are varied and general but they all have a common point in them. Trying to control or change minds which went wrong and backfired resulting in horror and calamity.

I looked up other videos but they just summarized the gameplay events and a little about the enemies. THIS, EXACLY this is what I wanted to watch. Deep outlast breakdowns of people who looked at everything available and are able to present it in a clear and conscise way with fitting editing. Amazing video that scratched my outlast itch for now. Thank you so much.
