The "Other" German Army - Chile's Prussian Tradition

The army of the Kaiser lives on - but not in Germany. The Chilean Army still uses the uniforms, traditions, weapons and marching music of 19th century Prussia and also of the Wehrmacht WWII era. Find out the story of how this came about.

When I visited Chile in 2007, I was stunned when we turned a corner in the downtown area of the city of Concepcion to be confronted by the sight of what looked to me an entire column of Wehrmacht soldiers marching. I had to look around a moment to check if this wasn't a movie set, but no, it was real. When you aren't prepared for the sight, it is quite a surprise!

Me too. I'm from Russia, Kaliningrad oblast (central part of former Ostpreußen) and while we have some Prussian heritage (like, for example, restored monument of duke Albrecht von Brandenburg-Ansbach, right in the center of Königsberg, near the Kant's grave) not much of it actually left after british airstrikes and soviet rule. It is really fascinating to see Kaiser's soldiers marching somewhere at the other side of globe.

I visited Chile in 2016 and couldn't help but notice the prevasive German influence there. The highway system has same signage as on the Autobahn in Germany (distance markers prior to exit at 500m, 300m, 200m, and 100m). The traffic lights illuminating yellow briefly before turning from red to green as to ready the drivers into first gear. German breads, cakes, and tortes. What surprised me the most was how extensive imported German foodstuff were stocked in the supermarkets, including Spreewald pickles, Dresdner Stollen, etc. They didn't cost much more than what I would find in Germany given the long shipping distance from Germany to Chile.

Not accurate. Magallanes is not a city, but the strait connecting the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans and the name of the Chilean region where the strait is located. The only major city there is Punta Arenas. Croatian immigration was big in the late 19th and early 20th century, specially in Punta Arenas, but the city is far from "completely Croatian". They're still the biggest and most influential expat community: I'd say 10%-20% of the people down there bear a Croatian surname.

Hi Mark, I'm Chilean and this video makes me proud of how my country has reinvented itself with many traditions and styles around the world. The army is Prussian and the navy is British since the first national fleet was assessed and lead by Lord Cochrane supporting independence efforts. I am aware that my country has its flaws and virtues, but throughout our history being so far away from the rest of the world surrounded by the Andes in the East, the sea in the West, the desert in the north and the glaciers in the south we are an "island" within South America. This has caused that throughout our history many leaders have adopted foreign styles and traditions in many aspects to modernise or update some aspects of society. great channel by the way. Cheers.

As a half German, I was stunned to discover German military traditions in Chile and Argentina when I was about 16. When I saw a Chilean parade I thought I was looking at a 1940s German parade march for a few seconds. In Chilean terms, it goes further, one of the capital ships was called Almirante Cochrane. What? I asked a Chilean colleague about the strange name and he said the Chilean Navy also had Royal Navy experts to devise a fleet.

Karl P admiral Cochrane gave his services to the Chilean navy after leaving the Royal Navy in the early 1820s to help fight for independence from Spain, after successfully defeating Spanish fleets and gaining enternal gratitude and respect in chile, he went to Brazil to help get them free of the Portuguese, he was also successful in this regard, winning against the Portuguese navy with his cobbled together Brazilian navy, about a decade later he went to Greece to fight for independence from the ottomans, also as a naval commander. The man led an interesting life en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Cochrane,_10th_Earl_of_Dundonald

Chile was built as a country looking at the English, fiscal discipline and politics. The navy was created by Lord Thomas Cochrane. the army of chile was instructed by the Germans, and the army also received that influence in the ceremonies but maintains the spirit of the United Kingdom army, in it they sound bagpipes in official ceremonies. Chile is a melting pot of cultures and has tried to feed on the best existing in the world. Carabineros de Chile takes as a doctrine the honorability and loyalty to the homeland of the Spanish conquerors.

They are some of the most formidable and professional in all of South America. Snowflake losers can complain and call this Nazi, but it is not. It is Chilean military tradition celebrating Chilean history. Viva Chile Mierda!

My sincere thanks to you, Hr. Felton, for making available this valuable and fascinating information to the broader Anglophone viewership. In these times when instant gratification is too often taken for granted as an entitlement, I strongly suspect they are few, and far between, who are willing to put forth the effort to go to the sources in the original languages for information. It's my hope that your publication will stimulate interest in the Ejército de Chile, as well as the nation generally, among those who may as yet have little familiarity with Spanish. This really going to come across as a brazen incidence of my soliciting beneath your shingle, but I don't wish to conclude without having said Chile's annual Gran Parada Militar every 19 September is a seriously glorious spectacle that's truly worth taking in, and almost all the annual parades going back to 1989 can be viewed on KZread. I'm not in any way associated with the Ejército de Chile, nor have I ever been.

Those soldiers must spend a huge amount of time drilling to be able to march with that kind of precision. I'm not sure it makes for a better army but it sure makes for a better parade.

All that "marching and saluting stuff" gives an organization a "team" feeling, and having more of it causes strengthening of that feeling. It may not be "Esprit de Corps" in the military sense, but it helps, when the organization has a purpose, like an army. This is why there is singing and exercise/stretching routines which resemble dances in some Japanese factories...and it works, improving productivity. Many cultures have their traditional dances, as well as patriotic songs. It wasn't deliberately figured out to do it that way, it was just noticed that it works. So there is still singing and dancing in various groups. In the military, the use of singing(chanting, actually) has been used for millenia, because it works - and the British and Prussians had lots of marching songs, and also traditions of having effective militaries. In the US, we have it in colleges, and this is one reason that college grads are thought to be more effective, because they think about problems as a challenge for a team, and will ask for help, or delegate jobs more readily. Those indoctrinated with the "Rugged Individualist" approach can be beaten by the ones that cooperate.
