It was pretty brilliant, actually. Made me want to be there with them. The characters are "real people", and act accordingly. They have relationships, personal drama, and bathroom breaks. Sure, some episodes were better/stronger than others. Star Trek TOS had "Spock's Brain" and "Turnabout Intruder" along with "Doomsday Machine", "Mirror, Mirror", and "Balance of Terror". "The Orville" is "appointnent television" for "Trek" fans. 3rd, 4th, and 5th seasons are required

The best part of the special effects in "Identity, part 2" was the storyboard. This could have easily become confusing, with hundreds of objects coming in all directions, yet they were beautifully choreographed. For once, effects were not left to the special effects people alone and have an actual narrative. And the music keeps being a highlight. Point at any other show that features a brand new, full orchestral score for every single episode. That's why they feel like small movies.

We have become big fans of Orville. Season one was good, but season two really worked. In our opinion, they out Star Trek'd Star Trek.
Actually, I think there was more humor in season 2, but it's not as awkwardly inserted as it was in season 1, and that's why it's not as noticeable. For example, when Ed and Gordon replicate a twinkie and argue about it, it's hilarious. You would think it's no way to start a very dark episode, but it actually works because it fits in with how the established characters would react to that situation. Likewise, when Isaac causes it to rain inside the bridge, it works because it fits in with the story. When Bortus and Klyden fight over cigarettes, it's funny but it works because it shows they're genuinely addicted.
The Orville Season 2 Did it Suck? NO! In fact I personally think it's an amazing show...

Orville is almost everything i wanted in a Star Trek tribute series. It's nearly perfect.
Ed and Kelly are the same as Fry and Leela. All of futurama circled around the "will they/won't they" with amazing payoff. I believe Seth can pull it off.
The Orville was the closest thing to Star Trek we got.
You know it was your review of season 1 that finally made me give this a chance and boy am I glad that I did. When I first heard about this show and saw the teases I was expecting family guy in space, one long spoof of everything I love and was really really put off. Instead what we got was a slightly rocky start (I assume because Fox forced all the jokes into it) that turned into an amazing sci-fi show that I've been craving since the days of B5, DS9, Farscape, etc. Thanks for opening my eyes.
Keeps getting better. A slow positive burn. Season 3 Hopefully!!! 😎

All right. You’re crazy. I got pretty sick of the Ed and Kelly stuff. It was funny every once in a while. Especially the hysterical episode where Ed first couldn’t stand, then was cool with, then was charmed by, then was weirdly attracted to, then had sex with Rob Lowe‘s blue character what’s his name. The scene where Ed was getting ready for his “date” with blue guy and walking through the cologne mist. I replayed that over and over again. Classic. Then using blue guy to get the two alien hate-each-other‘s-guts arch enemies to talk to each other, and THEY end up falling in love with each other, too. That was BRILLIANT. Two man-on-man romances in one episode. Who could ask for anything more?

When they fought over Rob Lowe in season 1? Omg. Lurve. Apparently that happened on set of Tommy Boy between Farley and Spade. I mean, it's Rob Lowe..
My only complaints about the Orville so far are the over reliance on relationships and Moclans. Relationships are just boring plots to me, and I think they could find more sci-fi comedy material with other characters, not just Bortus and Klyden.

Thought there were too many love relationships as well in season 2. Kelly, Issac, Talla, Bortus etc... Just started to get irritating after while. No break between episodes. The most painful was the Issac romance subplot. Felt like Issac was being exploited. It got pretty tiring seeing these characters self projecting their ideals on him like he should be ashamed for not having feelings. It was really ridiculous. Always thought Issac should be the opposite of Data from TNG. He doesn't want to be more human just to gather new information he deems worthy of obtaining. Also the doctors kids were annoying as hell. Another reason why families shouldn't be on military starships...

The final episode reminded me of the Voyager episode Timeless. One thing that did frustrate me is that it was never addressed out loud how selfish and irresponsible Kellys actions were. She literally said no living being can resist the temptation to change their future mistakes, n she was allowed to and did it (even tho super fast)
Issac sitting on the couch looking like Andy Capp in his wife beater and jocks was one of the funniest things I've ever seen.
I liked most of the humor in season 1, and in some ways, wish season 2 had more of it. I find it refreshing to see science fiction not serious and gloomy all the time, a road far too many sci fi shows take.
I would have been interested to have "Sanctuary" delve more into the issue of the rights of one civilization imposing their culture/world view, onto another culture/world view.
Orville has legs under it now. I think most people forget that the first couple seasons of TNG were shaky! 😁 I do think Kelly was deeply impacted, but will internalize it and torture herself. And I'm with you on Ed and Kelly. Do something, or move along... But Ed just can't accept his failure.
I missed the last episode of season two what happened? Or where can I watch it?
no , it didnt suck. it was great. exceeded any expectations , as did season one. well written and funny , with a remarkable atmosphere of the old star trek. I hope it continues.
IMO, the first few episodes were pretty weak, then it steadily improved throughout the season. My only real problem with this season is all the time they spent on romantic relationship drama, and retreading all the Moclan stuff so often. That being said, it was still an enjoyable show and began standing out as its own thing more & more.

Great show. I suspect you will be disappointed as I’ll bet the timeline they come back to will have some small differences from the original one and those may have to do with Ed/Kelley relationship.
The Orville is great and I hope there are a lot more seasons of it.
The title of the episode "All the World Birthday Cake is a line from The Beatles song It's All Too Much. I would guess that this is a deliberate reference.
With two ongoing Star Trek series right now, the best Star Trek show is a comedy series by the guy who gave us Family Guy?
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Did it suck? That is a question that each person can only answer for themselves.
Now if they could make the lighting a little more serious to go with the attenuated humor. It looks a bit silly how bright the lighting is, especially on the Orville ship, like it's a multi-camera sitcom that needs to remove shadows for production purposes.

the universe doesn't have to fit the characters. it's the characters that are awkward, not the universe.
Being less critical, treat the show as a chill time and you will find every single episode outstanding. I did and was so thrilled to the point that i gotta move from one episode to the next and finish the whole season in just 2 days.
The interesting thing is that the first season of the show will be memorable precisely because of the OTT humour and the presence of Alara. Sometimes early seasons of Stsr Trek cane quite forgetabe because it doesn't establish itself until season 3. Not so the Orville. Regardless whether you love or hated the humour in S1, you will always remember it. Indeed, I remember sone specific events and jokes from quite a lot of S1. I can't say that about Star Trek.
Well, you can't go wrong with a bit of Python as the conclusion.
Kelly young and old was a great episode and perfect sci fi, and her decision to not go out with Mercer on how it impacted the Universe and events, was a little like City on the Edge of Forever in TOS, and any plot similar to Time Machine movie, how a small event can impact history. Total Sci Fi.
Season 2 was a vast improvement. Hope S3 happens.
If the Orville has taught me one thing it’s that Star Trek is not dead. And also that Xelayans are hot.
1:40 me too. At least until 2E7 when Talla became an actual character.
Am I the only one that had hoped they kept the humor level up as much as season 1? I love the show, season two was great but everyone comments on how nice it is to have toned down the humor. Its freakin Seth! I WANT humor from him.
I actually loved the first episode of season 2. In stead of seeing what the ship did, we saw the ship it self. We saw what made it humane, and liveable. The school, something like a retail store, the living quarters in more detail, and finally a bar and a beautiful little restaurant, owned by a friendly host.
Love this show🙌🏽💯. Especially when it's taking itself seriously
I just rewatched both seasons and I had this thought: maybe it would've been better to have tomorrow, and tomorrow and tomorrow be the season finale, and then the whole of season 3 (or maybe half) would be the road not taken. maybe it could've been cool.
Rare for a show to find it's groove in it's second season. The Orville not only did that but surpassed my expectations. Bring on season 3 already I say!!
Wouldn’t Netflix pick this show up in a nanosecond if Fox doesn’t renew?
What sucks the most is that it has been over two years between seasons 2 & 3.
the music has reminded me of: star trek, star wars, space 1999 and the battles make me think of B5 and star trek DS9, all we need is an attempt at a long plot that doesnt overwhelm the feeling of the show unless its on par with voyagers "year of hell"episode which I thik should of been a season long XD also the moklans smoking was funny lol
I don't EVER want to see the Orville go away!!!!
I was sad when Halston Sage left. I loved her character. her dating Seth seemed a bit odd given the aga difference. people worried it would effect the show. then she leaves? anyway, in season 1 of Prodigal Son I liked, but thought she gave up her roll on The Orville to play a reporter? then season 2 came along! wow, her character is getting some excellent material now. good for her.
Never saw the first season but so glad I watched the second ! Totally enjoyed it and more than the new Star Trek ! I
About Alara's departure... What stood out in that episode, is the fact that MacFarlane didn't take the easy way out like most other "bleak" and dark Sci-Fi/fantasy genres of nowadays, in let's say killing her (GoT Martin's fav "sport" for instance), and then having a memorial where everybody is crying in a pool of tears that we _must_ see during a whole episode when nothing actually happens (laziness of writers copying each others, since "it works" as an emotional trigger - I got tired of that same plot repeated over and over in most TV Series to set up a character departure). Btw: as opposed to what you seem to like, personally I prefer adventurous stories and plots rather than "character psychological introspection and relationship development" unless it's _necessary:_ as since STO and then TNG, *I want to look at a Star Trek production for my leisure and entertainment,* _not_ to get educated or lectured on contemporary/trendy social issues (especially when those are dipped into utter incoherence when under the hands of maniacal SJW extremists), nor to play the prejudiced psycho-analyst amateur seeking tears forced down via pseudo drama. ST Picard is an extreme example of all this.. Why do critics always want some production to conform to _their_ narratives or predetermined mold? That's not "culture" nor creativity, that's essentially trying to dumb down everyone to some predefined cultural diktat: it's marketing or propaganda imposed from top to bottom, not "culture"... A good cultural canvas for a Democracy, is when we can access to _variety._

The Alara episode was alone worth more than the entire Discovery and I'm not even a hater. I want to like my Star Trek show.
The second season of The Orville didn't suck at all, but if I had any complaints about it, I'd say that Seth needs to steer away from storylines we've seen in TNG before. Don't get me wrong. I loved Identity and despite The Road Not Taken feeling a little rushed (not their fault, they crammed a lot in an hour), I'd like to see something truly original. The Orville has established their universe and characters incredibly well; it's time to start really thinking outside of the Trek box.
My absolute favorite moment of the entire two seasons was Ed taking out the shuttle to spy on Kelly and her new boyfriend, So FU Rowan Coleman. :)
Sy fy with humour. What's not to like. The one liners are brilliant. Hope they do series 3. It would get more attention on other networks
Alara is apparently coming back for at least a limited time
I'm glad The Orville is around, though I agree with most criticisms.
(2:03) Is Halston Sage really leaving the show? I thought it was kind of up in the air if she was coming back or not. :/ Still, I love her character and am sad for her to go. :(
Watching The Orville makes me feel the same way as re-watching middle-of-the-road TNG episodes. It's still good, you're happy to be back with your 'space friends', but ultimately it's just treading water. You don't get any new experiences. I don't blame 'new Trek' for wanting to steer clear of it's TNG era past and do something else. I just wish that what they'd done was a lot better.
Heh, I didn’t catch the title ‘nothing left on earth but the fishes’ when it aired but takes on new relevance given the line in the finale that there’s no fishes and ‘Kaylon’s are thorough..’... still don’t know what that means, (maybe hitchhiker’s reference?). Heh, anyway, only triggered because of this review. Thanks for all the reviews (fish?). i hope Fox gets off the potter and gets on to Season 3 renewal!!
Seriously though, who wouldn't want to be Seth McFarlane. First he gets famous for ripping off the simpsons/south park themes, now even more money for ripping off the star trek theme. It's the American dream.
Identity had a great premise and first half, but the resolution was very weak...Isaac helps to send a fleet of warships to kill how many Union members and his head is a Howitzer, but nah, we will keep him around and only give him dirty looks.
I have been a die hard Trekkie since 1965. That being said, The Orville absolutely ROCKS! HANDS DOWN! Season 2 was even better than season 1 because the actors have learned their characters and the writers have got their footing. I am interested to see where it goes from here. Episode 12 and the fight scene at the Mochlan sanctuary is one of, if not the, best choreographed and implemented fight scenes (with music) that I have EVER seen and thoroughly enjoyed. Seth McFarland has really created a great show in the expanse that was Trek. Star Trek is suffering greatly from damage done to it by Rick Berman and J.J. Abrams. Those 2 took a perfectly good formula and replaced it with swine feces. McFarlane tweaked Roddenberry's formula into his own iteration and has captivated audiences. I could do with a LOT less sexual innuendo toward homosexuality (and the rest) and just focus on the story at hand. We don't need to see into the crew's sex life.

I liked season 2 better than 1 for me. Loving the show and hope for more seasons.
everyone has an opinion and mine woud be allow the audience to think rather then have such predictable episodes as ''identity'' and most of the others, there were some very funny pieces such as smoking but nothing as good as removing a leg while asleep. Orville can be funny and serious at the same time, however it needs to grow up, people want to be surprised not think this is going to end in tears which it did. Season 3 please be somewhere between Galaxy Quest and DS9 where we can encounter more people, aliens and dangers while running backward and forward to that space base that the Orville got side-tracked from supplying
It was AWESOME!!! Less bathroom humor and more serious sci-fi. Seth kicked it up a few notches.
Really beginning to take off now! Still too much touchy feely stuff!
Ok, this is your meaning. I loved it!, season 3-4-5-6-7 etc are welcome
While I agree with your season 2 analysis generally (I like the Moclan episodes though), my wife and I LOVED season one. While season 2 has less obvious humour, that was just the showing maturing, though the humour is missed by us.
We see writing problem after writing problem on this show, and we mostly let it pass, but near as we can tell, technology has vastly improved in 400 years while common sense is a rarity. Time and again, we watch the Orville crew and officers leap blindly into situations for which they could have easily prepared themselves. For example, the Moclans are a violent species, lay eggs, pee once a year, can eat glass and metal, and have bizarre customs, rituals, and laws; does anyone on board bother to read a three-page summary before bringing two of them on board for two years? Of course not, so they keep getting surprised, inconvenienced, and/or injured because of this ignorance.
I don't think they intended to show how silly, and shallow humans are in "Orville" due to living a society so perfecty, but they did. I'm not saying humanity is weak, and pointless in the Orville furture, but it's sort of like a persons concept of roughing it was summer camping trip on year, compared to person fighting their way out of poverty just so their children can have better life. Every human in Orville is silly, sheltered, and really cool. I would love to see a show comparing, and contrasting the differance in humanity from the present, to Orville's time peried.
