I sincerely cried when the great ISAAC wanted to give his speech at CHARLY'S funeral. Despite their differences as a result of AMANDA'S death in the battle with the KAYLON and that charly learned of the cruel and ruthless SLAVERY to which they were subjected , she settled her affairs with him while she was alive. CHARLY died like a true HERO.

A friend of mine died suddenly a few months ago, a big sci fi tv geek. We'd always talk about star trek, star wars, marvel, but he never really watched The Orville. He wrote it off as a Star Trek spoof but i encouraged him to watch it, sure it started off silly but it morphed into a true Sci Fi space opera. He said that he started series 1 and yeah it was ok, a bit cringey but he continued. Series 2 his opinion of it grew a lot more accepting, he could see why people enjoyed it. By the time of series 3 he openly said he was so glad i said stay with it because it was... well it was Trek! Im very glad he got to see this before he passed. Im happy as punch you enjoyed it David! When a friend gives you respect, it can be heartwarming. But when an enemy shows you respect despite their misgivings, it can be as impactful as moving a mountain with but sheer will and determination. A sacrifice should never be the end, but the beginning of a far greater journey. A journey of peace and understanding. Anything less, is a sacrifice bourne not in trust, but in vain.

Gotta say, "The Orville" showed with Charly how to do a character arc. I really found her just annoying at best in the beginning. "Oh no, another pretty girl trying to look badass and being superior to everyone else" I thought. But she definitely grew on me later. I particularly loved that she put duty before her feelings when she followed the captains orders to bring Isaac back to life. And then also later she was always clearly hostile towards him, and yet behaved professionally and did what had to be done. What a difference to the emotional, obnoxious and insubordinate crybabies that the "officers" in modern Star Trek have become.

Not to mention the fact that she was lesbian. It was just a part of her motives. It didn't define her as a person and she didn't feel the need to constantly talk about it. Those feelings were for her and the only time they got out was when she was in extreme emotional distress. It's way more realistic and it's hpw it should be. A character should be defined by its story and personality. Not its gender or sexual orientation

I saw the clip where she sacrificed herself, and that one got to me too. All the years I've been a Star Trek fan, and yet I've barely even given this show a second look. Because of this character, and what she did, and how it moved everyone, including me, will be the reason I give Hulu $20 a month to watch this show. Wow. @@Xunethqualn the hate isn't about quality of the show, more like a cultural viewpoint: modern ST tells story of a dystopian future while old ST / Orville connects on a brighter alternative. There are still problems in Orville, but they are to be addressed and resolved, just what people in our time need - a hope.

I suppose everyone who dies on board receive a ceremony, but Burke was awarded Valor's because of her _willing_ sacrifice - she could leave the device and let Kaylon be eliminated, yet she _made a decision_ to stay and get the work done knowing full well that she's going to die.

I know people may shit on me for this but l really didn't like Charly the entire time she was in the show. I know as a character she was pretty complex with her hate for kaylon and it made sense from a story perspective but l couldn't get over how awfully bitchy she was every dang scene, sometimes her comments were really uncalled for and came out of nowhere. l honestly don't understand how people could enjoy her character, though l'd be lying if l said that her death scene didn't get me emotional.

I found myself disliking her for the attitude towards Isaac, because we know Isaac through the whole show, but she doesn't, and I say her hatred towards him (and Kaylons in general) is completely justified - Isaac _did_ participate in Kaylon's attacks, for us viewers it's easier to forgive the race of fascists for their massacres because we haven't lost anyone to the war, but Burke had! The war destroyed her life, part of her motivation for sacrifice must be inability to cope with the loss of her loved one. It's not shown clearly perhaps but there's much implied to happen behind the scenes.
