Astral Codec is a new story mod for Outer Wilds which details the origins of The Interloper! This mod adds 3-4 hours of new content to the game, with puzzles that really echo the spirit of the base game. Alongside The Outsider, Astral Codec is definitely one of the best mods made for Outer Wilds thus far!
Video has spoilers for Outer Wilds and the Echoes of the Eye DLC so watch out.
This is a pretty hefty video, longest thing I've uploaded so far, so if you want to see more long-form mod playthroughs please like and comment to let me know!

Thanks for the great playthrough. If anyone watching this plans to play the mod themselves, all of the issues Xen ran into have now been fixed.

even all these years later, dark bramble finds new ways to be absolutely terrifying i absolutely adore how clever it was to turn ghost matter visible and use the remnants of the original explosion as a tool to help see that inky black monstrosity in the void, as well as just making for a cool new visual to experience during the mod

Getting to the eye of the universe and looking back at the sun and seeing the sphere of ghost matter around it and realizing it was the remnant of that ancient explosion was the coolest part of the mod for me, definitely a great inclusion I agree

When I saw that they'd managed to incorporate the black sphere bug into the mod during my playthrough, I was genuinely stunned; I thought it was really cool and clever (and also terrifying). It was such a memorable moment for me!

33:37 -- One of the things (among many) I like about this mod is that the Nomai are in character in the texts -- Both as these specific individuals talked and acted in the base game, and just Nomaian high-browness in general. I have seen mods (which I won't name) where the Nomai are using slang or other modes of speech that sound more like a Hearthian (or worse still, a human being) is speaking.

Is it only me, or do those words appear to be spirals (particularly with these interjections)? I mean no offense, you simply seem very 'familiar' with nomaian manners of speech. Hypothesis: This attempt at humor is too long. (Don't worry, i'm just messin with ya.)

That was a really awesome mod! I like how it rewards you for having a greater knowledge of the game's mechanics and history. And the new music was great, I thought it fit perfectly into the game! And because I don't want to spoil anything for people reading this comment before finishing the base game, DLC, and this video, I'll artificially lengthen this comment to hide it in the "read more". . . . . . . . . . . . . . . I remember hearing a lot of people wish that you could use the Probe Tracking Module as an alternate way to discover the Stranger, so it's cool they made that the default way of interacting with this mod. And the origin of Ghost Matter is brilliant! It's a 4th dimensional(ish?) fuel used by a 4th dimensional(ish?) species from the last universe who built the Lingering Chime to send their story to the next universe forever, powered by Ghost Matter to last as long as possible. And they also allowed others to add their story to it. Or something like that. I'm still not sure how the Lingering Chime is here. I assumed it was made to just send their story to the next universe, not survive the death of every universe itself. And if it was designed for that, why isn't it in orbit around the Eye? Admittedly the story is still kinda hard to understand fully from just watching a video. It definitely feels like a lucky coincidence that you can create an eclipse, just what you need to pass the third test. I have no idea how anyone else in any universe is expected to do that. Even so, the fact the Vessel ever ended up in Dark Bramble is another chance coincidence that affected the fate of the universe, so they're pretty common in Outer Wilds. Also if I remember right, I thought the Interloper had only just reached this system (well after the Nomai arrived) before being caught in the sun's gravity. So the Chime wasn't always near the Eye? I imagined it was since its occupants had gone to the Eye before this universe started. So maybe the "transit" that broke the fuel geode off was the Chime moving to the sun, for some reason a hundred thousand years before it attempted the sample collection of the Nomai staff (I assume M-hours means million hours, and G-hours means billion hours). Basically I just don't understand why the Chime broke when it did, or what provokes it to do anything (collect samples, distribute probes, scan for life, etc). In reality the entire story probably makes perfect sense and I just missed a thing or two. Still, the idea of a species of space travelers who figure out how to send their story through the Eye and invite others to join them is pretty awesome. And how that ties in Time Clones, Dark Bramble's Inside, and Ghost Matter pretty seamlessly is amazing. Also fun fact, you don't destroy space-time if you make a time clone and go to the Eye, at least it didn't affect me back when I did that. The sample collection plotline was interesting to understand. Five days before the loop a container was sent to steal a campfire, Slate broke the container and it dropped two singularities (which I imagine were used for the collection) I seriously had to skip around the video while writing this comment to understand what the story actually was, and I edited what I said above several times. Like I said, it was hard for me to get just by watching the first time :) In any case passing information through the Eye is a brilliant idea, very closely related to sending your memories through time. And the high frequency of curious space travelling species being the result of the last species who did the campfire song (who themselves were unfortunate enough to not live in such a universe) was a great idea. It would have been awesome if this mod got the same level of polish and playtesting as the base game and DLC, then it would be so cool to play it and just say "Welp, this is canon now." Anyway, great video, great mod. It's cool to see another story that fits so neatly into the game. I really enjoyed it.

I also didn't get the full picture of the story going through it the first time but revisiting everything while editing the video made it a lot clearer to me. Also I agree that the Bramble thing felt pretty coincidental, my interpretation is that the aliens want to see that you are technologically advanced enough that you can just cause an eclipse, and that the Hatchling got lucky that Bramble was there instead. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the mod, I'm sure Walker would be interested in all the feedback

A cool detail that I'm not sure was pointed out that I noticed is that tally mark that's only 1/6th full-- that is Solanum's tally. I find it cool, because there's 6 places the Quantum Moon goes to, and of all the 6 places that it goes to, 5 of them you can find Solanum's corpse. But on the sixth, you find Solanum herself-- in 5/6 places, she's dead, but in 1/6, she's alive. I really liked that attention to detail!

Edit: Spoilers A neat detail (imo) is that the three characters reflect the three species in OW: The Archivist, the Owlks. The Scientist, the Nomai. And The Explorer, the Hearthians. That also supports another comment that suggested that the three were at the Eye in the previous universe, much like how the Prisoner, Solanum, and You + the other Hearthians are at the Eye.

I would've loved to have done the Outsider on here, but since I already played through it without recording it wouldn't be as genuine so I don't know how much value there'd be in me replaying it. Although similarly to Astral Codec, I played it when it was in playtesting however it changed a lot less between then and now, but maybe still worth a revisit? Unnamed Mystery on the other hand I haven't tried, so I ought to consider it! I think the mod dev had said they're going to do a big update to it so I might wait until then
