Olha, o Português Brasileiro e o Europeus a pesar de não parecerem, são quase idênticos. E a pronuncia afeta muito pouco a sua legibilidade na relação entre as variantes. Então é pouco provável considerar o Português-Brasileiro um crioulo ou dialeto. São variantes com pouco grau de separação. E mesmo a Galicia, com sua Castelhanização, ainda tem uma língua parecida o suficiente para que alguns se perguntem se é um dialeto ou idioma, em relação ao Português.

​@@BrunoCabralPeixoto hmmmm... então... eu diria que desde o momento em que o Tarallo escreve sobre as relativas cortadoras como uma inovação do português brasileiro, frente ao desuso das relativas pied-piping, lá nos anos 80, a gente já começa a ter um bom estudo sobre a diferenciação entre as duas línguas. Sobre a questão da criolização do português no Brasil, não é uma tese que eu defenda, mas acho que ela tem uns elementos muito interessantes. Um bom lugar para conhecer essa tese é o livro organizado por Lucchesi, Baxter e Ribeiro (2009), intitulado “O português afro-brasileiro”. Os textos presentes no livro exploram em profundidade muitas das características que diferenciam as duas línguas.

Sacha, I really admire your work, it's something I've been thinking about doing for a very long time, but never got myself to sit down and do it. Congratulations and thank you for sharing your videos and work. :) Edit: On 7:50 you mention that Portuguese has had 500 years to change in Brazil, I think it's important to remember that Portuguese had a limited usage during the colonial period, when the Língua-Geral was much more widely used. Portuguese was only enforced by a decree in 1828 by the Marquis of Pombal, making the language mandatory and thus spreading it, so that 500 should actually be more like 190 years. As for the length of language usage, it's important to note that even in its limited popular usage in colonial Brazil before Marquês de Pombal's decree, the Portuguese language did have speakers who lived entire lives in the colonies, and so the process of change did start earlier. Plenty of Portuguese people who were sent to Brazil in administrative functions ended up never returning to Europe and their families were effectively resettled, all while maintaining Portuguese as a language. What widespread adoption of the language and decline of Língua Geral after the decree did for Portuguese in Brazil was to advance new sets of changes and shifts in the way the language came to be used in the country!

+Very interesting presentation. Your thoughts on the evolution of languages are spot on. Languages are a primary means of human communication. Will the advent of mass global communication, via the fruits of modern technology in all its forms, ultimately lead to the refinement of "national" languages and possibly, in time, lead to the development of a world language, one that is accepted and understood by All.? As I see it, that is the direction humans are headed in if they are to survive as an entity.

Hey! What books in English and Portuguese would you suggest for learning more about the history of Portuguese?

II also have an interest in why Spanish has continued to "evolve" such as contar conjugates as "cuento" for example.

Hi Carlos! I would recommend looking for sources by searching 'história da língua portuguesa', as simple as it sounds. An essential read on this is Paul Teyssier's book by the same name, which, although a bit dated (some of the information in it has since been understood to be different by research in Portuguese linguistics), gives a good general overview of how Portuguese developed. Wikipedia has a good general overview of the history of Portuguese, which can serve as a starting point as well. Let me know about your article when it's published!

What would you say is the best way to implement Portuguese you have learned? For example, if you used an app like Memrise or Duolingo to learn a lot of words or phrases but have trouble in realtime conversation using what you have learned? Just more practice?

Apps like Memrise and Duolingo are good for the very basics of languages, but the only real way to advance is by using them with actual speakers, whether that's in groups or chats online or going to live in a place that speaks the language. Doing things like consuming media, reading books, etc are also good ways to improve your understanding and gain an intuitive sense for how the language works!

Sacha Thanks for your advice! I have looked for movies with Portuguese subtitles on Netflix and Portuguese interviews on KZread with subtitles, but the majority of the time the movies on Netflix are Brazilian Portuguese and at least for me, don't really help with understanding European Portuguese. Sometimes the subtitles may get the meaning across but are not word for word which doesn't help. On KZread most of the videos only have auto translate which isn't that helpful. Any suggestions for media in European Portuguese?

I would look into sources that come directly from Portugal, like TV channels and radio (RTP, TVI, SIC, etc) and see what you can find available to watch in your region!

its also important to understand that there was at first the Classical Latin (Rome) and the Vulgar Latin (province) but after Germanic tribes spread over most parts of Europe and created Empires and KIngdoms the 'written' (and slightly also spoken impacted) Latin became a 'Medieval Latin' (a quite Germanized Latin) which later changed to 'New Time Latin' and 'Humanist Latin'. The Latin written texts which were 're-discovered' during the 'Renaissance' were not (as many thought) usually old classical Latin texts but mostly texts of 'Medieval Latin'.

Um dos grandes influenciadores na forma como o português brasileiro evoluiu foram as interações de línguas de povos de origens diversas, como os vários dialetos do Tupi-Guarani dos povos indígenas locais com os dialetos dos mais variados africanos que chegaram.

What a wonderful organization! Vulgar latin for regions and people and Classical latin for uniting everything and breaking language barriers! We could use in the contemporary time, just making sure both are valorized and respected & taught to everyone! In Brazil this is kind of the situation, some regions speak different variants of words/pronounces but everyone kinda knows at least a bit (specially young people) about the others and the most used in television, internet & stuff, which happens to be the São Paulo, Rio and Brasília versions!

Yeah, definitely! This sort of a phenomenon is actually part of what keeps Portuguese coherent as Portuguese in Brazil. Although there are dramatic differences in sociolects and dialects across the country, standard Brazilian Portuguese taught in schools and used in media and for administrative purposes has the effect of uniting everything under the umbrella of Portuguese. The way you speak you make it sound as if there are sooo different when they’re not, otherwise we couldn’t understand each other.

Dear Sache, how do you explain the fact that Spanish is so much more similar to Latin than Portuguese. Example: Pater, padre, pai, tenere, tener, ter, . It is as if parts of words were dismissed in the transformation from Latin to Portuguese. I know that we can only guess here. But I would be very interested to learn about your ideas. Thanx......

I would say the spectrum would be French is its own Branch from how it sounds and vocabulary. Portuegese, Spanish and Italian are closer to eachother than French is.

Em geral, o alvo deste canal é desencorajar esse tipo de pensamento e o enaltecimento do padrão como o início e fim da língua, que vai contra as sensibilidades científicas da linguística, e sim encorajar uma análise mais crítica. É natural ter preferências, mas é melhor ter a mente aberta. Por isso o canal se dedica à linguística e não ao ensino de correção de acordo com o padrão.

Language doesn't evolve, it DEvolvs. There is a KZread early sound recording of a Civil War soldier at an advanced age speaking and one thing I noticed was how much better he enunciated his words and used proper grammar.

The biggest obstacle speaking Portuguese in England is the lack of native speakers in the country. Spanish is way easier to learn in England due to there being more native speakers to practice with. Portuguese is much harder however

how about Britania? British is a creole language

I hate referring to street latin as vulgar latin - coloquial latin, common latin? and romance language also seems like a misnomer - why not romanic languages.
