After he says the pun, does he say "言ってしまった"? It was translated as I'm sorry, but is a more literal translation "Said on accident", using 言う- to say and てしまう - to do on accident?

@@japaneseextremme3811 I thought the nuance of てしまう here was more like, "[I couldn't resist so] I ended up saying it". "Sorry" gets across the intention: that the speaker knows they shouldn't have said it, but they did anyway. A full, "Sorry, I couldn't resist" would also work, but perhaps it's needlessly explicit. Translation is an art, not a science, so translators will have differences of opinion (and I'm definitely not a translator!).

No wonder Sakurai was so hyped and excited to show off Terry and everything that came with him. He got to give everyone a literal treasure trove of music, models, easter eggs, sounds and references and nostalgia all together in one character package. It's so cool to see Sakurai delve deep into music! it feels like such a part of gaming would be a far disconnect from what he focuses on, but no, music to Sakurai is just as important as everything else!

I love to see Sakurai being so much of a video game music nerd. Even among game devs, it's not usual for a non-composer to talk about things like this one little, easy-to-miss off-beat that's on the second verse and how that needs to be recreated for the re-arrangement. I love comparing arrangements precisely because of the way they approach things like that in Smash.

Speaking of SNK, let's NEVER stop appreciating how much of a gigachad they were when licensing their music to Smash. We all know how Cloud only got the necessary two tracks for Smash for 3DS, and that carried over all the way until Sephiroth was released and Square loosened their vicegrip. But when Sakurai approached SNK, he gave them a list of potential songs that could show up in Smash and asked which ones they could graciously licence. SNK said "why not all of them". Absolute power move

I ran into that issue with "which is the main melody" in Advance Wars Re-Boot Camp earlier this year, specifically Sonja's theme. There's one part of the song (about 15 seconds in) where two melodies are playing at once. When the song got remixed in Dual Strike on DS, they emphasized the part I personally used to think was the backing melody, and the remix in Re-Boot Camp (WayForward did an AMAZING job on those by the way) follows the DS version, so that was probably intended as the main melody all along.

  • @BitFinityGames

I had to go look up the theme to see what you meant, and yeah that's pretty interesting. Usually if a part has a sort of harp-like arpeggio in it (going up and down the chord in a series of quick beats of equal length), my mind kind of registers it as the counter-melody rather than the main melody, which is what is happening in Sonja's Theme at that part. But it can be hard to tell when the counter-melody is as loud as (or even louder than) the main melody, which can happen in the original Sonja's Theme.

Let's all remember this only applies for GAME MUSIC arrangements. And in the context of a game like Smash Brothers to be specific, where the goal is to bring up nostalgic memories of players. Some of the most iconic pieces of music in the world are covers with changed elements to the original(Pachelbel's Canon is a must in weddings around the globe, and it's only because of how much it has been modified). Musical experimentation in covers shouldn't be discouraged as a whole.

I can't say why right now, but it's insane to have a video directly talking about the Psycho Soldier Arrangement in Smash Bros. The idea that "We need to be careful to not detract from each player's own past experience with the piece" is something that can be applied not only to the music, but to the series as a whole, as so much of it is about not only representing the best version of a character, place, song, or franchise, but also our collective memories of them.

The Psycho Soldier reduxs in Smash are easily *both* in my Top 10 tracks of the game, you really killed it with these arrangements! But yes, having distinctive NES and Arcade and different ports of games in the early 80s made musical intonation very inconsistent and dependent on each game's sound processing hardware. A couple of terrific examples of this would be the main song in Spelunker, or the many versions of Vampire Killer across the different systems. Ikari Warriors is also very different sounding on arcades than the NES version, although it's a little more smoothly translated/consistent. That said, sticking the Tenor Sax Solo in the English Version was SO FIRE FIRE - and maybe intentionally/maybe not, was like sticking Iori Yagami right in the mix with them! (I hear they pair up in some comics? Like Iori's a secret softy and Athena's a secret grouch and they end up meshing unexpectedly like that? Sorry, not a lot of KOF Comics/Media here in the states to know for sure...) But it does the job it needs to - preventing too much monotony and really giving the mix some flavor. As someone that's been trying to demake later KOF songs into 8-bit format myself; there's a surprising amount of depth and complexity to some of these pieces. SNK's Music Team performance video was a big highlight of Evo 2022 for me! And it was wicked cool seeing Capcom's Sound Team playing contestants into the arena with their themes this year too!

One of the elements that makes Smash Bros shine is definitely the music, and the care taken into arranging each track. Sometimes I listen to arrangements in other games done either officially or by fans that somehow miss a key element of the original piece by not following it closely and it's always grating. I'm glad Smash takes special care to avoid that. It's not related to any game that has music in Smash Bros, but in the Elder Scrolls series there's the popular theme that began with Morrowind's "Call of Magic" track. The same track was later used as the basis for Skyrim's theme. The theme has a "heartbeat" rhythm throughout it, which is relevant to a the story of Morrowind and overall composition of the piece. Whenever a arrangement doesn't include it, or subdues it, it feels like the entire arrangement falls part.

Nice to see a little more of the process behind the arrangements of the Super Smash Bros. series! Also, while I'm not an SNK fan, even I am not ashamed to admit that the Psycho Soldier remix did get stuck in my head for a while after watching this.

For anyone wondering, the earworm song that Sakurai couldn't initially tell the main melody of from Athena [Arcade Version] (1986) is called "Forest World".

I want to be a complete indie developer. Like I'll settle for working with a team but I want said team to be as small as possible, even if its just myself. But music, that's the biggest sticking point I struggle with. And it sucks too because the most successful indie games ive noticed have *absolute bangers* for their sound track. Pizza tower, Celeste, Undertale, I mean this is clearly something that's important to a games success.

Even though it may sound odd, I kinda like how they made the choice to keep the weird intonation in the English remix of the song. It’s supposed to be nostalgic for those who grew up with the game, both in and outside of Japan, so respecting people’s memories of how it sounded even if it’s grammatically wrong, ends up making it emotionally right.

It's mainly that Japanese version times with the notes, where English version times with the beats (making sure the second "Fire" lands on the same upbeat as "Soldier" in the second phrase). It's usually this factor that makes people prefer one or the other.

Exactly! "The original piece is always right!" Staying true to both original versions is a great choice, and it's details like that that make Smash Bros. such a special game.

Another fantastic video by Sakurai! Hearing Sakurai go in depth about the remixes for Smash had me pretty psyched, lol. But that just goes to show the love and care Sakurai and the composers take into making the world-famous Smash remixes. I have to agree that the original piece is always right.

That ending note of "We need to be careful not to detract from each player's own past experience with the piece" really resonates with me. In general, I like video game music and their remixes and remasters, but Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition's soundtrack sounds really, *really* off to me. In particular, You Will Know Our Names and Engauge the Enemy just sound a bit off due to my familiarity with them (as they are some of my favorites). I'm not sure I would call it "fortunate" that Unfinished Business remains untouched, as while it is my favorite song in the whole series and I probably wouldn't enjoy a remake, it is a little sad that another version of it doesn't exist. Time to Fight! is one of the rare tracks of the Definitive Edition that I prefer to the original, and if the hypothetical new version of Unfinished Business was in the same camp of "same, but more," it would likely be incredible. (I think some song names have changed between versions, but I have used the Definitive Edition names for consistency.)

Psycho Soldier is one of my favorite songs in Smash, even though I'd never heard of the original before. It sounds like an anime opening in the best kind of way, and the instrumental portion is fantastic too (it could even work as the "credits" version).

One game in my nostalgia is _Thexder 2: Fire Hawk,_ in which the US soundtrack was a different arrangement than its native JP soundtrack: The BGM for Mission 3, its latter half featured a repeating electric-guitar riff in JP, but the US arrangement switched it out for a flute solo. Or if you compare the Mission 8 BGM, it opens with a melody/countermelody pair but the JP and US versions prioritize different (opposing) roles as the "main melody".

Well 2 things have happened this day. 1: I learned some good lessons of game development today as usual. 2: The second half of video, Psycho Warriors I think it was called, is both stuck in my head now thank you very much Mr.Sakurai, and is now heading up there as one of my favorite catchy songs. Which version you ask?......hm...I'm not sure....maybe the smash English version and the original Japaneses game version specifically.....maybe....
