The Original Morgan Horse

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

The Morgan is one of the earliest horse breeds developed in the United States.[1] Tracing back to the stallion Figure, later named Justin Morgan after his best-known owner, the breed excels in many disciplines, and is known for its versatility. The Morgan horse is compact and refined in build, with strong limbs, an expressive face, large eyes, well-defined withers, laid back shoulders and a well arched neck and a clean cut head. There is officially one Breed Standard for Morgan type regardless of the discipline or bloodline of the individual horse. This is a tribute to the "old" style Morgan which is more compact and muscular, whereas the "newer" style Morgan is much more refined and flashy. I truely appreciate all the breeders out there supporting and continuing to breed for the original Morgan horse.

I have had horses for 50 years. I had 2 pure Morgans of the Coal Creek Flyhawk line and I still have the daughter and granddaughter of them. They were both not real big horses but with HUGE presence and a look of eagles. They are special.

I rode a golden palomino one ..only his face was slightly more like an Arab than these guys his owner bought him in the states and took him to Ireland. He was a big horse. He really stood out from the horses here. But i think among any group he would have stood out. He had the X factor. Very fitting for America's first breed.

Fear not...you will find a perfect horse. I never thought I would, but I did. The big surprise was it was a quarter horse. I had a Morgan as a kid. Had to choose between him & my baby. I got my AQHA 15 years ago...I never ever imagined that he'd surpass my Morgan's heart, but I know he matched it. Now I'm a Morgan lover, but a quarter horse owner. Good Luck & let your next horse find you.

Thank you for this video!! I am so sick of Saddlebreds inudating other breeds and destroying them. Just get a Saddlebred if thats what you want! This is how Morgans SHOULD look! Stocky versatile, good strong legs. This hyper, long necked pacer, is a horrible shame to the breed. I leased a real Morgan back when I was very young and she did it all. Barrel racing, dressage, pulling, trail, racing, etc. etc.... Just like Figure. :)

They were Canadian Horses..Justin Morgan's was from Canada..He ripped the breed off and the breed didn't get the recognition it should have gotten like being the foundation horse for the many breeds of today. If you look at the original Morgan and the original Canadian they are identical, and the Canadian was here way before the Morgan.

Actually....Morgans did and do (to this day) everything. They were used for farm work, turned around and pulled the family carriage, were saddle horses, race horses (running and trotting), children's and women's horses, hunting/jumping horses. Figure himself was the best logging horse, and the best running and trotting horse in the state, as well as a carriage and riding horse for the family. They are not simply "farm" horses, but an all-round, do everything horse...with sensibility.

I am a FOSH judge for 14 gaited breeds and within that organization they have open gaited breed classes where Morgans can be shown. It's fun to take any kind of Morgan to a non-Morgan show.

I had Morgans Horses for 11 years and then started my family in "91 and had no time/money. I lost track of the Morgan Horse by laws for a while, but something happened to the Morgan Horse during the '90's and when I checked back in to see my favorite breed it wasn't the same anymore. I could never get a straight answer about that. It was treated like a dark family secret, not to be talked about in public or something. It use to be no while above the knee and all of a sudden every color imaginable was being called a Morgan. I wondered what person or persons had been responsible for messing around with my beloved breed, had a backyard breeder taken over the majestic Morgan Horse? I was very upset about this, still am. If anyone knows the details of story please, share.

Great point! The original Morgan had a similar look to a classic Arabian, but usually w/heavier muscle, bigger bone & a less chisled head. In recent decades, both breeds seem to have become more 'Saddlebred-esque' at least in the Park classes. The Quarter horse was based heavily on the sprinter type TB from the start, but the lankier look has been around for a few decades too. All three of these breeds have not benefited from selection for more height, IMHO, leading to loss of breed type.

morgans looking like arab, arab looking more like hackneys, or quarter horses looking more like throughbreds, why have breeds if all your going to do it breed away from original standards to fit what you want. why not just have types instead of breeds? cob type, arab type, racing type, draft types jumpers, hunters, and saddle horses for trail riding. I love the original morgan very much, cobby type yet very pretty too. stick to the original standard I say.

@@rltreasure The story goes that the original Morgan horse, Figure (also known as the Justin Morgan horse, after his owner) was out of a mare of Arabian descent known as the "Wildair" or "Wildaire" mare. His sire was believed to be the English thoroughbred (not to be confused with the modern thoroughbred) True Briton, who was owned by a Tory officer. One night, a man named Smith snuck behind enemy lines and stole the horse, riding him behind the American lines, and eventually standing him at stud under the name, "Beautiful Bay." His lineage might be secure had it not been for the fact that, at the time, there was also a Friesan horse standing in the area by the name of Young Bulrock. Although True Briton/Beautiful Bay is the accepted sire of Figure, it is most likely Young Bulrock who is the actual sire. Remember, this is an old story as Figure was foaled in 1789--the same year the Constitution went into effect; the same year the Supreme Court was created; the same year George Washington was elected the first president.

Yeah, he was a bit of a mut. Hence all the versatility of the breed.

Morgans have become like Arabians these days. They are just equine poodles on the end of a leash meant to be in beauty contests. Only those Morgans that have tried to remain true to the original body type and temperament are true useful and exceptional horses. Just like the only true Arabians are those tgat are desert bred by tribesmen, not those in the stables if the obscenely wealthy Arabs who, like most American breeders, breed for nothing but looks, and unhealthy looks at that. The deeply dished faces that restrict the breathing and legs so spindly they are prone to injury and breaking under trail conditions. Such a shame
