The Friesian Horse : Friesian Horse Documentary.
The Friesian is a horse breed originating in Friesland, in the Netherlands. Although the conformation of the breed resembles that of a light draught horse, Friesians are graceful and nimble for their size.

I have been the loving owner of two Friesians now in my life, and they have been the most loving, sweet, hard working friends I have ever had. Both absolutely love to trot, it is their milieu. Canter is secondary to their favorite gait, as it takes twice the energy of a trot to maintain.

I was blessed to meet these lovely, beautiful and friendly horses in Friesland NL when a study group from my small college in NY's southern Adirondacks attended a seminar at a college in Leeuwarden in 2001, was blessed to be able to visit the then newly built Friesian breeding facility there. Met some of the world's top Frisians, whom are never sold to foreign buyers, but remain in Friesland. Hoy fellow Friesian fans.

This breed of horse is hands above the rest, and there are many more chasing it's title , good luck with that . They fit the criteria of the all-rounder in every equestrian discipline, bar none . They are more than a horse , it's personal between owner and horse, that connection is both ways. It's like the relationship of the lead mare and heard. Leadership and trust . 🐴 🤠 🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎

I bred my black bay thoroughbred mare to a Friesian stallion and got a lovely black bay filly warmblood. The stallion's owner had to do the breeding on the QT, as it were since Friesian owners frown upon cross-breeding & she could have been kicked out of the Friesian registration club. I want to know the genetics on how the breed first came about - like what other horses are behind the Friesian horse.

I heard that Andalusians (the Spanish war horse) and Morgans, among others, were used to bring the breed back because there were no more Friesian mares, only the stallions. I also heard the original breed was created in the middle ages as a northern European war horse capable of moving through deep snow quickly with its high stepping, calm in battle and strong enough to carry a knight in full heavy armor as well as it's own heavy armor. The high head carriage was to protect the knight from swords and the extra height was an advantage in battle. Of course, all this presented an impressive show of strength and dominance.

Though I don't know much about horses--only rode a couple of times as a kid--this question strikes me as a bit odd. I'm pretty sure that, if the natural way was superior, that's how it would still be done, especially with these horses. They're clearly very special. The only thing I would like to know; is there some reason East Frisians aren't associated with these horses? Surely, back before the Frisians were finally conquered, they would have also had them, and still, until they were no longer necessary for farming? Or is it simply that they didn't have any left by the time the breed nearly died out?

I am so in love with the "black pearls". They look elegant with their feathered legs and are intelligent and loyal. If you want to see more of them, watch "Friesian Horses" on KZread - stories told by Yvonne, a Dutch breeder, about her mare "Uniek" which has fans all over the world and other black beauties of her herd. Also very touching: "Black Horses" - scenes of the life at a sanctuary at an old family inherited farm with pastures in a picturesque landscape in the UK. Watching young "Nero" and his furry friends will bring you so many precious hours of relaxation in this world full of stress, problems, fears and aggression! 🥰

This is an incomplete documentary and therefore deceptive. But I don't know why. I always understood that the Freisian Horse was first a war horse. Here is a past from WIKI on the Friesian Horse; "The Friesian (also Frizian) is a horse breed originating in Friesland, in the Netherlands. Although the conformation of the breed resembles that of a light draught horse, Friesians are graceful and nimble for their size. It is believed that during the Middle Ages, ancestors of Friesian horses were in great demand as war horses throughout continental Europe. Through the Early Middle Ages and High Middle Ages, their size enabled them to carry a knight in armour. In the Late Middle Ages, heavier, draught type animals were needed. Though the breed nearly became extinct on more than one occasion, the modern day Friesian horse is growing in numbers and popularity, used both in harness and under saddle. Most recently, the breed is being introduced to the field of dressage, causing the decline of the draught-type with its sturdy legs and back."

@@saorvardon When the team was pulling a carriage or something. Usually there's a wooden tongue connected to the carriage or buggy, and it runs between the two horses up to the front. I'm sure I'm not explaining it correctly

@@mervjb809 I've never knew it was called a 'tongue' in English. I know the shafts, but that's for a single horse. I know what you mean with the absence of the tongue. It's very old fashioned. They used to steer the wagon by pushing the curled 'thing' in the front. Sometimes they used their feet to brake by putting them against the butt of the horses.
