Thor (Thor Odinson) is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. The character, based on the Norse mythological deity of the same name, is the Asgardian god of thunder and possesses the enchanted hammer Mjolnir, which grants him the ability of flight and weather manipulation amongst his other superhuman attributes.

The origin was pretty accurate but with a few exceptions. One of the are where he gets his powers. In the original myths, Odin got his powers by hanging himself from the World Tree for 7 days and afterwards he could successfully control runes. This is probably where the Odinforce is based on.

William Conwell Sorry. Misread your comment. But Odin also did the Same for Bor. He didn't bring him back either, after Bor was "killed". He inherited his power at that point. Because the power seems to follow the family line and go to the oldest on line. (That part is speculation.)

Zorastorm 32 yeah, spider man has always had a special place in my heart, I think he has enough power to be really interesting but he isn't so powerful that he is unfathomable powerful. Plus he has to use smarts to over power a lot of his foes and he jokes a lot. Then I think Dead Pool is my second favorite because I like jokers.
I love your videos man, I always wanted to read comics but never wanted to spend the money on it, now I get to learn about all kinds of hero's and villains. Keep up the awesome content bro
Great content coverage and explanations! Listen to your vids all the time! Thanks! I collected Spider-Man comics from 1978 to 1995. You help me catch up on everything.
Great video. The story of creation in Marvel comics follows its real world counterpart somewhat. One of the main deviations I know of is the fact that after Odin and brothers kill Ymir they are supposed to make Earth out of his body. The ocean was his blood, they sky his skull, the clouds his brains etc.
Asgard gods in reality are called Aesir (Æsir), not Asgardians.

This pops up while i'm reading Neil Gaiman's Norse Mythology. Perfect!
I love your vids!
*Rob,* you'd likely enjoy, _"Norse Mythology"_ by Neil Gaiman (he narrates the audible version -it's the best thing coming out of Audible right now), he seamlessly retells all the most important Norse stories together as 1 unified story. It can be easily finished out in a couple days tops. This Marvel is pretty close to the actual Norse genesis story.
Awesome!
The good thing about waking up at 6am is Rob's videos
And since you were on the subject of pocket Dimensions I think one of the funniest illustrations to ever come out of Marvel was the one where Deadpool pokes open the pocket of Eternity I think it was the funniest thing I've seen in a long time
it's pritty close to it except for the fourth brother and the odin force stuff
I love this already Marvel takes some of the mythical aspects of the religion and some is right and some is Marvel but it's entertaining not the less. I thank you for your time for these great videos. Now I'm signed up and can't wait for the rest of the Thor saga and other heroes of Marvel.

The Rob Force.
Do you have a video talking about all the versions of Loki, even the other Loki that was an orge?
Yes! More Thor!!
Well from what I know about the creation of Earth from Norse mythology is that Vili, Ve and Odin kill Ymir and use his remains for the whole of Earth and the sky. His blood makes the seas, his flesh makes the ground, his bones I believe make the mountains and his skull is used to make the sky. (Also it was said that his sweat gave form to the frost giants)
@ComicsExplained The origin story there is actually pretty damn close, I'm no expert but I do have an interest in Norse mythology, Looking forward to your Fear Itself video, I've already read it so I know what happens but it will be awesome to see your take on it.
Asgard is an upscale, high-tech, gated community which is probably the best place to live. Unlike Themyscira, a gender biased residency whose architecture hasn't been updated in centuries.

Unlike Asgard... whose architecture haven't been updated since the dawn of time? Do you even read either Thor or Wonder Woman?
This version of the origins of the universe is nearly exactly how the universe started according to real Norse mythology. With only Orin's story being a little off with what happened to his brothers and how he became powerful.
I like to use a Bubble analogue for explaining asgard and other pocket dimensions in marvel. Like the main Reality is a big bubble and asgard and the otehr dimensions (Dark dimension etc.) are like smaller bubbles that are stuck on the side of the bigger, main bubble.
I took a myth class last semester, it definitely draws influence from the real myth but still a lot different
Apart from Odin getting the powers of his brothers and the whole Odin force thing (In the actual myths they stuck around and took control when Odin was out wandering. Also according to Loki, they slept with Frigg a lot.), what you covered here is fairly accurate to the original Norse mythology. Most of the differences are in the details or comes later, in particular when it comes to Loki. They do seem to have skipped a lot though, for example Odin killing Ymir and making Midgard out of his corpse (probably because Kirby changed that in Tales of Asgard).
Also when Odin told the last great war story to Thor and Loki. He said we remain as a beacon of Hope shinning out across the stars
Yes Rob, This story is pretty close to the Norse Mythology from Neil Gaiman. The only thing I didn't see in the video was that Marvel didn't mention was that only the Gods can travel through the rainbow and anything else that tries to walk on the rainbow will burn. But it was pretty much on point.
The Marvel version of the Norse creation myths is fairly close but obviously with license taken to make our favorite race of Kirby-esque super aliens. A few main things of difference I've noticed... 1) Vili and Ve don't have an attested death that I'm aware of in any of the Eddas or Sagas, but they have been noted to have ruled in Odin's stead in some stories. Also no Kul the Serpent, he's all comics. 2) The jötnar in Marvel are simplified down into Frost Giants, but in Norse Mythology the fact that their father was Ymir, the giant of primal frost, didn't carry to them all being tied to frost or ice. They were typically associated with abstract or primal forces (like Angrboda the Jotun of Sorrow or Thjazi a shapeshifting wild man of a giant), or were the embodiment of massive natural phenomenon (Aegir for the Ocean and Jord, the Earth and Thor's mother in the original legends). Also if you're going to be dealing with Ragnarok, you should totally look up Lokasenna, since Loki being bound by the Aesir is one of the events leading up to Ragnarok in the old stories, it's amazing to see that one of the accounts of why he was imprisoned was basically breaking into a party that Aegir was throwing after being thrown out for killing a dwarf servant and then proceeding to Rap Battle every single god in the hall until Thor shows up and repeatedly threatens to knock his head off. I can't do it justice, if you haven't read it, find it! Loki gets savage.
Yay and good morning sir!
You've got to do a multi-part over view of the earth X trilogy, it's what if, but IT's awesome if you haven't read it yet.

Keep it up! Now cover Xmen Exiles lol
I liked the video XD As far as relating the Marvel story back to real Norse mythology it's pretty close with some large flaws. Such as Yimir did not come from the ice, he was made when the lava from Muspelheim collided with the waters of Nifelheim to create ash and clay which formed his body. So in real myth he is sadly not a frost giant but a combination of all of them. Let's call him a mud giant XD. Also Odins brothers didn't die and the three together we're the ones that made Ask and Emble, the first humans but Wile and We seem to disappear from lore and leave to the other realms so I see why they killed them off in Marvel. There are a few other things but I'm not that nitpicking. Thanks for the great content Rob. Keep it up XD.
Norse Mythology is the best, to me. Which makes the MCU's version incredibly lackluster, boring and one big wet dream for a science nerd. In the original mythology, you've got all the best elements from D&D in it; dragons, wood elves, dwarves (who are NOT dark elves) and loads of other things. You have sorcery, epic fantasy, heroes and ancient kingdoms. With the MCU version...it's all "magic is just science we don't understand" (which I call BS to.) For me, the only Marvel properties that seemed to have nailed Asgard and the Nine Realms appropriately are in the Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes cartoon and the Thor: Tales of Asgard movie

Your house analogy is pretty tight. And there's no doors, just the lightbridge, the bifrost. Sometimes sorcery can open a "door"
That's cool and interesting
The 10 realms is just like The 5 Boroughs. Every realm is a different spot.
hi Rob :) do more injustice pls
In marvel Earth is spoke of as one of the nine realms. I think the nine realms are just planets that the bifrost is connected to because as guardians waged war in those areas. It would make sense to designate names for sectors you have conquered and have permanent pathways to get there and protect those areas or outposts
I never seem to get ads from your channel, surley its family friendly enough?
Its pretty dam close tbh. Theres some discord regarding who made the world and humans. Snorre Sturlasson says Odin, Vile, and Ve but the völuspa says Odin, Höder, and Lodur (identified by some as Loki, not Odins son in norse mythology)
Rob can you make a video about the aftermath of the story ragnorok I heard Thor made Oklahoma Asgard or something along those lines
I read the early Thor comics as a kid and I remember something about how Odin created Asgard by using the Odin Sword and cleaving it apart from earth. I'm not sure of the date, but that comic tells a lot of the Asgard lore. Maybe someone can help with this.
One of the coolest norse myths is that Freya is kind of equal to Odin and has her own hall like Valhalla and gathers her portion of the dead.Or that Balder will survive Ragnarok and will be the progenitor of a new race of gods. Or that Odin has actual giant blood coursing through his veins
For the most part, this is very close to the real world mythos. It is surprisingly how close it is.
A lot of the Marvel version of the Norse myths are almost direct copies from the Norse Edda. The comics just changed a couple of names, added some characters, changed hair colors, etc. The origin of Asgard is almost straight out of the og myths, with a few minor changes
I prefer this origin to the whole "We use super science and are pretty much aliens".

Marvel pretty much straight lifted that from the prose edda with a couple of twists.
The story and events are pretty close to the myths, but the personalities of the gods are a fair bit different. Loki, for example, was a blood brother to Odin and would team up with Thor on various quests.
always love the vids, but this "like" is def for your emphatic use of the word yeah!!
It'd be awesome if you had like a "sit down" or "podcast" type thing with a Norse Mythology professor or expert and talked about how close the comics come to the myths.
Hey Rob, one question here. Are we supposed to understand that the MCU is all Filled in with the Pocket Dimensions and there's no other dimension but the pocket ones? Like, Dormamu dark dimension @Dr.Strange movie or the Quantum Realm @Ant-men or even Kun-Lun @Iron-Fist series or Asgard @Thor movies?
Will you be going into the oz effect in action comics if so i cant wait
So who's more powerful: Odin (w. and w/o the Odinforce) or Dormammu?
Bring on the Thor!! Love the whole Asgardian Mythology.
Do a few videos on Spawn and The Darkness!

I know this post is old, but my favorite theory about the origin of the structure of Asgard is it’s the remanence of the exploded planet they once had before it’s Celestial emerged.
