Orange has my favorite sound! Both clean and dirty! It has the exact sound I hear in my head when I think about bass

The secret to getting good recorded tones IMO, at the least the sound I always had in my head, is splitting the bass into two tracks. A lowpassed for compressing clean lows and a high-passed (or just hard low cut) with highs and mids to be distorted/saturated. There’s pedals and plugins now that work this way innately, but when I first started recording bass 20 years ago it wasn’t as common. Same principle works if you want to double electric bass with synth bass. Keep your dynamics and color and character of the high freqs, but have perfectly even and compressed low end. Funny to think Chris Squire and Geddy Lee etc were doing this live with two amps many decades ago :)

I've NEVER listened to other band members crying about, "never run effects on a bass." They've heard Cliff Burton, Jack Bruce, Geezer Butler, Geddy Lee, and countless others proving how amazingly good any number of effects sound on any number of bass tones. They say those things out of fear of experimentation or others having input, or them wanting to maintain their grip on control, or just ignorance, not knowing what kind of incredible tones, sounds, and textures, can be created.

That's hilarious. Nobody says anything out of "fear", unless they're complete idiots which, could be the case but it isn't the majority. As a songwriter/producer, I'm all for enhancing sound with effects as long as, and this is important, as long as they enhance something and aren't a gimmick. A bass player who's always widdling above the 15th fret with a wah constantly engaged may be having the time of his life but he's doing any song situation a disservice. Same for guitarists who only think the lowest 3 frets is all there is to a guitar. My point being, make sure you actually fulfill your instrument's role before fucking around with effects thinking you're Cliff Burton just because you're plugging into a fuzz and wah.

I pre-ordered it, really satisfied with sounds coming from the unit, in my opinion there are 2 or 3 „minuses” and every one leads to the other - lack of parallel output or effects loop in the unit forces putting other effects on pedalboard BEFORE the Bass Butler. It’s not a great solution for a bass player not using the amp; I sold my OB-1 500 (great amp, trully a beast, loud as hell, too loud for my usage) to buy the Butler. The best sounds from Orange BB (cute short name) come from the cabinet simulations. Using other effects after the Butler causes bypass of cabinet simulations, because they work only with the XLRs. Hope Orange’s gonna put an effects loop in the BB V2. Every other aspect of this unit is great, but forcing a „proper” way of signal path is, in fact, kinda lame.

A late respons to this comment. In theory the jack for the expression pedal could be used as an effects loop for the dirty channel. Saw Orange Technical Director Ade Emsley mention this in some video but i have never heard about anybody actually doing it. Still no way of putting effects on clean side though.

This does sound very good! My personal preference would've been to hear less top end, but I get a feeling it's a quality pedal. An all-in-one solution like this can be a real help in preventing you from entering the endless distortion quest... I used to use the M-80 DI and was quite happy using it professionally for a decade with just a little comp in front and LPF after. Then I decided I needed a break and I've since bought seemingly every overdrive pedal ever made! PSA. Distortion... not even once. Okay, once. Or until you get a good one. Just don't overthink it. But who am I kidding....

Serious question. I want to learn more. I have years of experience with audio mics and how they differ. so I get the gist and 30+years of Drums, so I have a good base, but Where can I learn more about what a "clean" bass sound is? Amps are all different, how can there be one "clean sound"??? I can hear the highs and lows as pedals change the output but what is considered " correct" or right? Is there a technically correct setup of pedals? is there a hierarchy of order. Later I'll dive into bass pickups, string choice and cable/cord effects on a sound. Thank you to all who take the time to answer. P

Sounds kinda weird on its own, but in a mix, it sounds absolutely filthy! I wish you could run it so one of the XLR’s could send a blend out. A lot of smaller venues don’t have many channels to spare, and you don’t wanna put your clean distortion blend level at the mercy of a sound guy that might hate distorted bass.

My “concern” with this dual XLR output is that you present these to a sound guy. He then proceeds to completely make a hash of the mix of the two sounds coming from the unit. He has them badly balanced, way too much of one channel and not enough of the other in the mix. We are as musicians don’t always get a say at soundcheck, we can’t hear the sound as we are on stage. There is too much room for error. There should be the two separate channels that blend into one output to the desk. This is far more sensible and takes most of the knob twiddling away and out of the equation.
