The ONLY Way You Should Carry Concealed.. Except.. | At The Range Podcast | Navy SEAL

At the range, Alex showed Jason and Hayden his new off body rig, and as we started discussing a few things that we figured we’d film.
These are the typical topics we have behind scene. Some deeper, some lighter, but the wheels are always turning.

As a fellow Veteran, you Sir are Never outdated on weapons carry 😬 maybe the ‘mode’ of carry per se. Pending when you were in the military, for me ‘84-‘92, (and several years in the Reserves), I trained & carried the 1911, then the M9 🤢🤮, the M14 & M16, plus shotguns (and machine guns) 😬😎 Now a days I still carry a 1911 10mm, or an IWI Masada Slim/Glock 19 clone (BUL Armory Cleaver), AND Always a small pocket pistol like a Ruger LCP. The times have changed, BUT your training with Uncle Sam set the baseline for you to comfortably conceal carry. Jason & his crew will give you some very much needed guidelines/refreshers to regain your confidence and help in returning you to an armed & prepared citizen. Your best step is seeing a need and filling that requirement with solid instruction. That’s Awesome!

As a CCW'er for over 47 years I've literally tried and utilized EVERY carry method with almost every type of pistol from 2-shot derringer to snubby to full-size 1911-platform. I've done ankle, shoulder, IWB, appendix, small-of-back, pocket, off-body, etc,. A pistol at home ain't of gonna do me any good sitting in my safe because it literally pains me to carry even a G19 IWB. As I've said, I'm no spring chicken and have been carrying for decades and I've settled on OBC in a sling pack. I recognized the many shortcomings of this style of carry, but my rationale is, I'll sacrifice a bit draw speed for the comfort of actually HAVING the pistol on me. Knowing I'm a bit behind the curve drawing from OBC, I'm extremely hyper vigilant and I'm always assessing and managing distance from potential threats. Basically, anyone can talk nonsense about how they and don't care about the discomfort when you're young and new to the game, but run your system for a consistent 3-5 years, and then we'll talk. OBC does have it's place, and NO it is NOT OPTIMAL, but at least you'll have SOMETHING!

I agree with you 100%! I've tried IWB, OWB and other methods. I know some don't agree but I find pocket carry to be the most comfortable. It ensures that I will always have my firearm on me when I leave the house. Now, during cold months I have more options to carry with heavy outside clothing. I much rather have my tool, no matter what, than to be caught without.

I carry open on property. I have a place in my truck that is very close to hand. It’s just too uncomfortable to carry anywhere on me but inside a pocket. I don’t go anywhere that screams assault me . Gas stations seem to be the major likelihood for an ambush and I’m walking the 4 corners of my vehicle. Panhandlers don’t even approach because I’m not approachable. My pistols in my pocket at convenience store stops. Crime can happen anywhere and I lessen the chances by staying in after dark and being vigilant at other times. A short stay in my pocket seems to be all that’s necessary especially on 105 degree days

Your probably never going to be in a situation where it’s a gun duel, fastest draw wins. I like obc because most bad guys won’t have a clue what you have in your bag as long as it’s secured to your body so someone can’t run up and just pull on it like a purse. I’ve never drawn my gun on anyone thank god but I have been in situations where I know I’m being followed and without giving them attention I simply pull my Spiderco Para 3 out and act like I’m cutting a string off my shirt and that’s been enough to make them turn the other way fast. Bad guys look for people that seem like easy targets because they don’t want any trouble or struggle.

I have been using this style of off body carry these days for evening walks in the neighborhood with my wife. Here in SE Texas it is hot and very humid. Carrying in a cross draw pack really works in this case. I can put my ID, some med, light and gun in there and its not getting soaked with sweat. I have clear visibility of anyone approaching from long distances which allows plenty of time to prep pack and undo zipper if needed. Situational awareness is key.

Nice talk guys. I learned a lot again. I’ve been cw carrying for 26 years and determined a long time ago that holster discomfort is nothing compared to the discomfort I feel if I don’t have a gun on my body. I did go to a Vertx bag for my MPX to carry at church and other family and friend situations. I’m able to have and provide access to med supplies, a controllable firearm, and magazines if a situation arises where my on body weapon needs some help.

Comfortability is not the primary consideration but it is high on the list for one simple reason,if you’re not comfortable or at least somewhat comfortable you will be less likely to carry. The key is to find the holster/firearm combination that is comfortable enough to carry every day and that you are proficient with. Considering the variety of available holsters today there’s a holster that fits everyone! Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it!

Nice to hear the honest answer that, essentially, "none" of the carrying methods/holsters are _comfortable_ . It's so tempting to hop from one holster to another, believing that the next one will be _comfortable_ . I'm old skewl and don't want to relearn something unless really necessary, so I'm stickin' with my outside the waistband, on the hip, holster.

A big plus for off body is that some places now use thermal imaging and AI analysis to identify people who are carrying on body... if carrying in an off body (like a satchel style) makes it easier to carry in non permissive environments where they have these scanning capabilities.

It takes a little more time to get to it. I drive roughly 4 hrs or more to various job sites around the SouthEast and this Fanny pack makes it so easy to keep a gun on you at all times even while driving.

You touched on the FMJ rounds v JHP rounds. One thing I learned when it comes to the type of ammo you have in your EDC when conceal carrying is if you carry the FMJ rounds, and have to use your EDC in a self defense situation, you could potentially own every person struck by a FMJ round who is an innocent bystander. I save the FMJs for the range and carry JHPs for self defense carry.

What you said may be true. But I thin it is also important to reflect historically that people use to carry .32 revolvers with .32 round nose lead cartridges and got the work done just fine. These days people are obsessed with round count, caliber, Type of cartridge and fast draw/optics and light riggers. Not saying there is anything wrong with that but its something to note.

I tend to think in situational terms, for general EDC where I can have a loose, untucked shirt, AIWB is the go too. Then there are other situations where some form of OWB, or OB may make more sense. At the end of the day, carrying concealed is mostly a mix of tradeoffs. Boiling down the situations to the smallest likely set needed, keeping things simple as possible, and training reliviously are key to success/survival.

  • @quise_7
    @quise_7Ай бұрын

I use both options. It's situational for me. I love that I can use my carry bag as an emergency kit as well. I do believe comfortability matters too. Discomfort will discourage the average civilian from carrying. It can also make them feel paranoid in social settings if the discomfort is keeping the gun on their mind.

Its front compartment contains a "stop the bleed" kit, pocket notebook, pen and wallet. In the main compartment is the firearm and spare magazine. I have a medical "morale" patch and O+ blood type patch velcro'd to the front which may or may not help with the issue of it screaming "gun."

Alex should definitely check out the videos Phlster put together on proper holster positioning and fit. Will help you with the AIWB issue of printing he's having! On another note, I think there are plenty of devotees to concealed carry who will suffer an uncomfortable holster, but a lot of folks won't, and when you find a more comfortable method of carry (which can be done) it makes carry so much more appealing and pleasant because you don't have anything jamming you in places on your day-to-day routine. I'm no fanboy of any particular brand and am still searching for a better option that what I have, but having tried more than one option, especially for AIWB, there are times I forget I'm even carrying, and times when I can't wait to get rid of it! Some of that comfort changes depending on what type of pants/belt combo I'm wearing. SOO many variables, but I don't think we should settle for something that's truly a pain to wear because we've bought into the idea that carrying is "comforting" and not "comfortable." My two cents.

I bought the pricey Nexbelt and it's really not all that comfortable, i actually use a $25 Dickies belt for my EDC. I've been carrying this XDs now close to 2 years now at work doing lawn care to roof work, tearing off shingles and laying new sheets of plywood. Bending over constantly, sure i have a couple pinch marks on my stomach from my holster/slide but it's really not that bad if you can manage the weight! The word “threat” is vague. Think last that word or feeling. If you don’t, you’ll never understand why friendly fire occurs. Are you shooting a person that has just defended themselves and is maybe moving to cover? Are they a threat to you or are you defending someone else? Can you use the firearm with a backdrop? Are you going to assess the backdrop? Not having time is not going to help you if you take an innocent life. In other words, we train to be fast in the draw etc. but you still should only be shooting as fast as you can ASSESS…that’s as fast as your brain can go under a particular stress. So sometimes as Frog was saying, you need to exercise the brake. Oddly enough, it might mean slowing down.

A lot of good points made. I carry comfortable with a carry pack. But one thing as well that I didn’t see unless I missed it, it also depends on what bag you get and how you set yourself up. 945 makes a great bag with a pull down strap that is just as quick to draw as lifting your shirt for IWB. As for the spare magazine. I carry two extra magazines. One is always in my pocket because I practiced grabbing the extra mag from my pocket and the third magazine is in the sling pack. There have been plenty of times where I wouldn’t carry simply because I couldn’t conceal well with what I was wearing or I had a weird walk because of how uncomfortable it was for what I was wearing. With the Fanny pack carry, it never matters what I’m wearing I can always carry

As a person who practices both methods, there are situations for both. Honestly training as much as I can when I can has helped my confidence. 10 minutes of draw training with both has helped my confidence with the way I do both ways. That’s the key for me.

Good refresher on this as I have a couple of those packs. I rarely use, but to get good with drawing you have to practice, practice, to be able to draw without looking down. Even then you might look down if you have a malfunction to catch up on the draw !

FYI, these types of bags (Hill People Gear Kit Bag type) are designed so that you can draw without touching the zippers at all. The way you set it up is to leave a 1-2” gap in the top right corner (as you’re wearing it) of the firearm compartment zipper. You use your left hand to grab the gap and pull open the compartment while simultaneously using your right hand to grab the pistol and begin the draw. Here’s a video breakdown: kzread.info/dash/bejne/paeerrOhmN2rkZs.html

~3:10 you can be comfortable carrying a firearm, and the goal of comforting over comfortable is regurgitating what some tactiturd guy said in the 80s-90s. I totally get the underlying meaning and would be the same way. However, after carrying for 31 years, I EDC AIWB a XTEN w a TLR1-HL for just over a year now. The first XTEN has just under 800 rds fired and the one I’m carrying now has over 4K rds fired. Prior to was other forms of full-size handguns. With that, I try on and buy clothes (Kohl’s, Walmart, some from Cabela’s etc for that “gray man” vs 5.11, vertx etc.) while wearing my EDC rig - gun, knife, light, wallet, keys etc. It’s a pain in the fourth point of contact but the return on investment in time and effort is tremendous. My cover shirts and pants are a size or two bigger than I would otherwise wear. I use a ratchet belt, and on my holster, I GOON tape a piece of foam padding cut out from a $4 seat cushion from Walmart. The padding forms nicely to my body, and curls around the muzzle end of the holster. When I wear my M18 in the same manner, I nearly “forget” it’s there. Obviously I don’t, but it’s so comfortable it’s almost like not wearing a gun at all. This allows me to comfortably carry a pistol I’d rather fight with if a threat puts me in that situation.

One thing about carrying in a fanny pack is they’ll be subjected to search at certain places. Bags backpacks and purses are searched frequently in the Subway, Bus Terminal, or various buildings around town where they have searches like this. God Bless you and your Team and Family Brother and thank you so much for teaching us skills that I can pass along to my Daughter and Grandson and Family. ❤️🖖🏼🇺🇸

Alex demonstrated more proficiency drawing from the Fanny pack than more individuals seem to exhibit drawing from an OWB holster. I’ve used Fanny packs, both the ones marketed by holster companies, and small, inexpensive versions not intended for anything other than carrying wallet keys and cell phone. I prefer the latter for those rare moments, including gym but they don’t come off or get far away from me. I use that method only because it don’t doesn’t stand out and scream gun. It’s so mall a G19 wouldn’t fit, but a five shot or G43 will. I’ve been “made” twice by LE using a pack designed to carry a handgun. I was in LE myself so nothing came of it, but off body carry doesn’t necessarily equate to concealment. Stopped using those bags for anything but storage. Could use them for med kits, I suppose, but going into a “non permissive” are might get you searched. The points you brought up are valid and excellent advise.

A company called Greyman Tactical makes rigid molle panel inserts for backpacks, brief cases, purses, shoulder bags, etc. The smallest sizes they have is 8x6 which can potentially fit into a fanny pack. A person could attach a Kydex holsters, spare magazines etc. to the panel securing the item in a consistent position.

I just picked up a 5.11 small fanny pack that's been out for years - I'm sure you guys have seen it. The tab can be left outside the zipper for quick entry, although there is not a lot of room in there. My use is for when at the gym and I would certainly take it on a walk or hike (when legal). Other times I choose OWB carry, usually with a small P365. The 5.11 makes carrying even a bigger handgun very comfortable, but it obviously says "I'm carrying" as you guys have noted. One guy at the gym gave me a look one day but didn't say anything. I love knowing that people around me are legally carrying - not everyone shares my opinion!

Yes. I 💯 agree. Learning gun laws is a challenge sometimes, especially if your state CCWP is honored in other states like how i live in Florida. Florida CCWP is honored in 37 other states. So i have to go onto my USCCA account every two weeks and look up changes to those states, and or keep my mind fresh on those 37 state laws. As far as carrying. Im appendix, strong side, and i have a ankle back up

I am 65. I am somewhat disabled after 28yrs in the Army. My left shoulder is all kinds of messed up. Same for my back, have had three surgeries, lots of metal in there. (that is a whole different story) I am left-handed. I converted to right hand as my primary shooting hand. I carry external of my pants. I draw cross handed with the right hand at the 10:30 position (G19). My daily clothing is jeans, long sleeve work shirt untucked, boots, hat. I live very rural. I do get out and ride my mountain bike all the time. I carry a belly band setup then (G43). I have carried my entire life. I have evolved (old man talk for had to make changes due to mother nature and age). Everyone, find what carry method works best for you. Train without ammo, deploying the firearm. It is free. What you wear can aid you or restrict you. Never give up, never quit.

I have too much stuff to take for the day so I have to have some pack of sorts. I think tight chute makes the best carry packs and something I just thought of was to carry on body and have the pack sit where the gun is for more concealment. Because people do see you walking around with a bag strapped to you and that WILL be the first thing they try to steal or grab in a fight. Hate stuff in my pockets so fannys are nice

As one who has carried over 45 years there is something I have found to be true. If the weapon is too uncomfortable to carry, you will leave it at home / work (as a LEO). IMO comfort is a definite contributor for real carry. Yes there is a time needed to get used to it but you must find a comfortable method of carry. I have used 4:00, 3:00 and for a while a fanny pack back in the 80's. The Appendix carry is still new to me.
