The Only Reason SpaceX Works (Gwynne Shotwell)

Ғылым және технология

A few years ago I was talking with a venture capitalist and asked him “how does Elon manage to run two companies?” He straight up told me “Elon doesn’t run SpaceX, Gwynne Shotwell runs SpaceX.” It was kind of a funny moment and I thought I would share the story in more detail here. To be clear, Elon still plays a really critical role at SpaceX, but his most impactful move was probably empowering Gwynne to make SpaceX actually deliver all of these crazy goals.

NOBODY but Elon could have figured out how to debottleneck the Starlink Project (fired most of the managers in Seattle after a review) - or drastically speeding up SpaceX production (all hands on deck, sudden and unconventional hiring spree for qualified welders). You needed Elon for that.

"Rockets gonna blow up" "My deadlines are bad" "I am wrong very often" There isn't a solid through line in any anti SpaceX or Elon musk line of thinking. It's all a million different ideas and farts in the dark. I think it's more the opposite. Shotwell is closer to what you can call the PR side, though that's not what she does. Elon is just eccentric and spews some crap out on twitter sometimes while he's not sleeping for weeks on the production line. It's not by design that it works out as if it's PR. It's further from PR than what shotwell does. But who really knows.

    Elon knows what he is doing too. If he says, "It might work, or it might blow up, but it will be a good show either way", it takes the pressure off and motivates the engineers. At the recent Tesla AI stream it was similar, he was saying that the new AI board team's goal was to make something good enough so that the main AI team wanted to throw away their GPU pool, after a questioner asked a question with an impossible answer (about locality of message-passing). He knows how to keep engineers in the sweet spot of productivity, with an achievable goal, but with the space and freedom to overperform and get extra honour. Gwynne Shotwell making sure the figures add up and that the business is there from the market and that everything keeps on track is so so important too. So many of the decisions have the hallmarks of both of their thinking on it, e.g. fly Starlink satellites to prove the F9 reusability/reliability when no-one else will risk the rockets on their Nth flight: win-win, leaving everyone else in the dust.

Then I remembered that Gwynne joined SpaceX at 40 and she made it work (and then some!). Your presentation examining potential for space manufacturing corresponded with my own belief that it is vital to learn to walk before you run. In order to do that, I believe we would do well to become a space-dwelling species before we strive to become an interplanetary one. For one thing 'pseudo gravity' vital to long term health of our species during prolonged presence in space can be easily maintained by habitats in what I think of as 'neutral' gravity simply by constructing them to withstand rotation at requisite velocities. Acquisition and processing of resources and manufacture of myriad products from them in micro gravity would be of enormous benefit to interplanetary colonization. This is eloquent of sensible sustainability not only from a standpoint of enabling research and proving technologies that will not only be vital to space travel in general, but also to supporting interplanetary colonies in diverse ways. This precept is emphasized with regard to an absolutely vital capacity to respond to ever present potential crises more rapidly, reliably and effectively from space based installations than the surface of Earth. Facilities on the lunar surface are inarguably a step in that direction but even they are subject to limitations that need not necessarily apply to any entirely based in space.

    Gwynne is a space industry Rock Star! I have followed the USA space industry going back to the Mercury days of the 1960's and since that time there have been only a few very notable personalities who were pivotal to the advancement of space technology and exploration. Elon and Gwynne are among the most notable that we've seen in the last 20 years! Go SpaceX!!! You Rock!!!

    One of the biggest keys to SpaceX's success had been them allowing their team to fail and fail spectacularly. No blaming, no finger-pointing, just an attitude of: "What can/did we learn?" And then they get it right much faster.

    I think is more than residual capability, is like beeing your own best client. With starlink you make a client to dramatically increase your rocket business because total normal potential clients revenue is small. The same with tesla he creates a giant battery factory and makes powewall and megapacks as a plan b for low car demand and also a best client for the bstteries. Same of the future autotaxi, making thebest client for tesla in one company. Or more in your line creating a robots/drones/etc products as a new big client for their autopilot software, and keep expanding the business base...

    7:00 says that once a StarLink satellite is in orbit it will “generate revenue for decades”; however, this appears incorrect as, IIRC, StarLink satellites are designed to have a useful lifespan of about 5 years before being replaced. / In general, a very good video.

  • @JohnCooganPlus

    @JohnCooganPlus

    Ah yeah, that’s a bit unclear. What I meant was the StarLink business will generate revenues for decades. They will replace the satellites, but the network will be making money for decades.

    Curious about the satellite company where did it come from did they purchase an existing satellite company from someone else and then develop their satellite where did the capital come from where did the employees come from did they just magically produce a thousand or so satellites out of thin air in an industry where usually one satellite takes several years?

    Just found this channel. Very exciting. Please review the Ashley Vance book on Elon Musk and Liftoff. Both provide some limited but very supporting stories of the importance of Gwen. This is the CEO Elon welcomes so he can focus on vision, engineering, deadlines, culture, etc. Gwen is certainly a A+ / 11 rockstar. Great of you to call out. Elon let’s very few people be the face of his companies and talk. Gwen is one. Karpathy wrt to AI is another.
