This is hands down the best video I have seen for the Gigcaster 8. It is comprehensive and very informative without being overly complicated. Always best to hire a musician to explain things to other musicians. Well done sir!

TBH - their (notably) earlier incarnations, such as the BR-800 had some superior options for effects and mixing compared to its contenpories.. Used one for years, an excellent machine. The set-up via Linux was and is a major game changer for me... It made live work with a laptop running as backup audio device seamlessly a viable option... I always look at live work as a process of "problem reduction". If something can do what you need and want, without adding to the list if issues - it's a keeper. If it reduces problems, it's no longer a keeper - it's a necessity.
Well, I was going to ask some questions, but you answered them all! If I had watched every video on the internet about the Boss Gigcaster 8, I would never have got as much information as I have from your single video!

I can't believe how feature packed this is! Even if I'm not a musician, I want this! I currently have a Behringer x1204USB mixer that I use as an audio interface and I like to have ALL my sound devices connected to it so I can use my Sennheiser headphones for everything. I currently use a bluetooth receiver for my iPhone's audio, but I want to use my good mics for the calls as well and that currently is not possible with my mixer. I know it's possible with the Rodecaster but now that I see this Gigacaster, I will consider this one as well 😲
Excellent presentation. Well done!

It’s changing how I’m doing gigs! Used it last night like this. Put the Looper setup into it on inputs 3&4 (make channel 3 stereo and only have one fader to deal with). Had a second mic for the host on channel 2. Then recorded via SD and used the USB-C with Apple Camera connection kit to plug into my iPhone for live streaming. Plus my iPad was connected on the Bluetooth channel for playing some music inbetween sets. Live stream cut out a little due to the signal in the coffee house but I have the FULL recording no problem and the live stream is here: kzread.info5XqnCF1HFxA?feature=share

I've been tinkering with the footswitch (the FA-GC) and the Gigcaster over the weekend, going into depth with the parameters the footswitch can access and if someone wanted to use this as a 'backing track playback' machine this is what I've learned. You get a bit more functionality if you don't use the 'PAD LINK' function. As the footswitch pedals can access many more 'A' functions than 'B-D' functions, what I wanted to do (namely, start tracks with the footswitch and turn the EFX on and off between tracks) can be achieved but with a reduced number of tracks. Since the GA-FC has 6 buttons I can access 32 tracks via 4 buttons and with a simple changeover of parameters can access the other 32 tracks which could be changed between sets. This is fine for what I want. So by setting the FA-GC to 'PAD LINK' off, you can set the individual GROUPS. Choose 'PEDAL 1' icon. Then select GROUP 'A' and set the CATEGORY to CH 2 and set the FUNCTION to 'EFFECT ON / OFF'. Then select GROUP 'B' and set the CATEGORY to 'SOUND PAD' and the FUNCTION to 'SOUND PAD 1'. With this setting, when you press PEDAL 1, you either start the track on SOUND PAD 1 and turn the EFX on CH2 ON, or pressing again stops the track and turns the EFX off. You rinse and repeat for the other three PEDALS (2-4) altering just the 'B' Group FUNCTION setting to SOUND PAD 2, SOUND PAD 3, or SOUND PAD 4. To change the BANKS of SOUNDPADS choose PEDAL 5, GROUP 'A' and set it to 'SOUND BANK UP'. This way, every time you press PEDAL 5 the SOUND PADS ascend to the next bank. A cool trick then is to hold PEDAL 5 down and it ascends to the last BANK (8), from which you can press single presses to access a particular BANK (say 5 presses to go to BANK 5). With a TRACK SHEET laid at the foot of the pedalboard, I can navigate to any of the 32 tracks on BANKS 1-8 on SOUND PADS 1-4. Likewise with a simple tweak (changing the 'B' Group FUNCTION in each PEDAL to SOUND PAD 5-8), the pedalboard can then navigate to the 32 tracks on SOUND PADS 5-8 through the BANKS 1-8. I've made a tracksheet as follows, where my SOUND PADS in each BANK all correspond to the same colour. PAD 1 = WHITE, PAD 2 = RED, PAD 3 = YELLOW, PAD 4 = GREEN, PAD 5 = ORANGE, PAD 6 = BLUE, PAD 7 = PURPLE, PAD 8 = PINK The NUMBER at the top is the PEDAL NUMBER and the number at the sides are the BANK: Changing the FUNCTION to SOUND PAD 5-8 you can then access the other 32 tracks, This suits our setup as I perform original tracks while my wife who is a classically trained soprano, performs covers. I hope that lot makes sense. I will do a KZread video when I get the time...and that's not even mentioning the jaw-dropping EFX on this thing which makes a live sound so easy to achieve.

Hi, great video. Do the 4 headphone outs have their own individual mix? EG, Headphone out 1, for the bass player with heaps of bass guitar, a little vocal and backing track, headphone out 2 for the singer, with no bass guitar but with heaps of backing track from your phone, etc?
hello, which powerbank do you use? I have tried several and each time I get the “insufficient power” message. thank you for your help and for your great videos!
Great video. It seems to have everything I need except one. Can the mixer be remotely controlled via an app over bluetooth or wifi?
Could you please explain how to set a particular guitar patch to a particular effects pad? When I go to the functions for an effect pad I can change the controls but I can’t choose which patch goes to that particular pad
Hi John .. great review .. I have 1 question ….”does it have anyway to sync via usb or MTC ..MIDI CLOCK ?.. tnx 😊

No worries. Great thing is, plug in a Micro SD card, make sure it’s on Multi-Track recording and then… just hit record. Easy. Then you can import the file into a DAW and your set! 👍🏻
Great video. I have one for you JP. The unit is insane but if you are a solo act and like me use StageTraxx3 (sometimes with backing track, sometimes just acoustic with loops etc) which is amazing can you use it to received midi messages ti change all the patches etc via Bluetooth (as well as the ipads Bluetooth audio) or would you need a wireless USB to Midi receiver like the Widi to do this. Do the vocal effects have harmonies as well?
@geofflaw12
5 ай бұрын
I would be really interested in how to use this with stage Traxx 3 as well. At the moment l send midi messages to my zoom pedal to change guitar patches but have no way to do this with vocal effects. This seems the ideal answer for that but I don’t quite see how to do it.
Okay, I do have a question for you. (Knew you'd have the best first review on this machine!) I got the GigCaster 8 for the complete suite, as you said. My use purpose for it is primarily Jamulus, live, real-time online jamming. Here's what I can't figure out: How to get non-direct monitoring through the headphones. (Equivalent, I believe, to non-direct monitoring when inputting to a DAW.) Every audio interface I have looked at has this Monitor alternative: Direct or not direct. But I cannot find it in the GigCaster. When I asked Roland support, they said to send the DAW output (equivalent to the Jamulus output, I think) to GigCaster's USB as channels 1&2: "In the DAW audio settings, sending audio to Gigcaster USB 1+2 will be received on this USB channel of the Gigcaster 5 or Gigcaster 8." (Weird, as I don't see any USB 1+2, but I think they just mean to send it to 1&2.) When I do that with Jamulus, I do get the indirect monitoring mix, but I also get the direct mix--so I'm getting it twice--the direct that I don't want in Jamulus, and the somewhat delayed (latency) sound from the Jamulus server. Have you found a way to get the non-direct monitor mix without the direct monitor mix?
What are the chances you can use the extra physical faders (if you're one man show for example) for different inputs on the computer. Let's say I was on Zoom and wanted chat audio on its own fader. Or if you were gaming and wanted game audio on its own fader, separate from all system sounds.
Great video.. going to buy one
Good mixer but i have a question, in interface mode can i record my vocal with the effects but in the DAW still gonna be dry for changes ?
This looks amazing! Great video. For me as a solo artist doing live streams, I also use my RC600 - is there any way to route the effects INTO the looper and then simply plug the guitar into the mixer after the fact? I do love the various effects for vocals (which for my main vocal I don't run it through the 600, but I use a looper mic for harmonies, etc that is separate and that I can loop). I am also wondering how user friendly it is to use with Ecamm Live? Thanks again, JohnPaul!

I looked through the manual and as far as I can tell the sample player can't be triggered by MIDI, is that correct? That would be a glaring oversight if true. If it can then it would be a must buy for me. it would help me combine 2 pieces of gear and I'm always looking for a way to cut down the # of things for my live rig.
I’m curious… does it work as an interface for iPad / Loopy?
Can you do loopback mixing as in… Does the device present multiple USB outputs to the computer that can be assigned to multiple fader channels for mixing, before sending back into the computer?

Have you tried loading up your own WAV files onto the soundpads? Is there a length limitation? I'm hoping there isn't and that the data is being streamed from the internal SD card. I bet it isn't BUT if it was, you could play back backing tracks from the pads.....how good would that be for a totally integrated unit?
Thanks for this new video post. I was planning to buy Zoom L8 , but you just made my decision much harder 😅. This is looking 👀 like the one 🤔. Also is there a overdub feature?
Hi Paul, a little question. Is the Gigcaster 8 the newer version of the populair Boss BR-800, who I have? Nice video by the way. great job
I'd like to see a follow-up video showing the unit fully connected to the gear you'd do a livestream with.......maybe it would have to be in parts, with each section being 10 mins or so long? Thanks.

How could you do a trio band live gig . 3 vocals, bass, electric/acoustic guitar and stereo drum kit? Thanks!
Hi thanks for the info. I have a question regarding use with a boss RC5 looper. Is it possible to hook up the looper and have the guitar effects not impact the loopers drum machine?
@JohnPaulMusicUK
11 ай бұрын
For this scenario, I would use this in the following way: Guitar > Gigcaster > RC-5 > speaker/PA Plug your instruments into the Gigcaster first and the output of that into the RC-5. Then any effects you use both mic and guitar would be captured (or bypassed to the PA) through the looper. Obviously if you want to record the looper to the SD card, then you could send it back to an input.. but the you would run into problems with it. I’m working on a video at the moment that solves this issue. Hope this helps.
This is awesome dude im getting this i have the boss br 800 but wow this giga caster is exactly what i need.. can i hook it up to reg studio monitors instead of headphones? Can i jam along to backing tracks also thAnk you for yer time yer great

Awesome bit of kit and very well presented by yourself I might add. Seriously considering this as a live mixer, solo singer with backing tracks. My concern would be controlling feedback etc. is there any feedback suppression or parametric eq on the output? Any rta, spectrum, or visual representation on the output to identify feedback spikes ?

Hey Alan. So there is an EQ. On the master out, each channel including USB out as well so you can have a different EQ for your online audience to the main PA. There is no visual representation of this thou on the board.

What you didn't mention was how you combined the video and audio. How did you align the audio from the gigcaster to the video? How long did it take you to edit this video? Was it a better experience than previously or about the same? I always hand clap to get the video and audio together, but maybe I am very ignorant. It looks like an amazing tool. I bought a hard disk record to plug into my normal mixer with outboard analogue effects, and just use two condenser mics panned left and right. I try to get the sound right at the start so no further sound editing for the video. Just align and edit the video. BUT, i might forget to press record on the camera or on the recorder, etc etc. Then Im juggling SD cards. But at least there is no fan noise from the computer.

That’s a great question. So.. here we go: 1) my Sony camera is my talking head camera with an SD card in it and a Rode Video Mic Go 2 attached. That’s the audio you hear first. 2) my iPhone is the top down camera, running Filmic Pro 6 3) the Aston Stealth mic is plugged into the Gigcaster, and the Micro SD card is in that and recording. 4) QuickTime screen recording from the computer whilst plugged into the Mac. So three audios and 2 videos. No audio from the computer, just the screen recording. Then I still do 3 claps at the beginning of every take. Then matched up in LumaFusion and edited on iPad. Hope that’s helps. 👍🏻
Can you record each track individually?

Do you know or can you figure out…if i was sending tracks from a computer daw to the unit, how many tracks could it record to the sd card? I know the tascam model mixers can do this.
This looks great, shows the way things are moving. However as a gigging musician myself it seems to to be guilty of what I historical term as 'Japanese watch syndrome' ie it does about a thousand different things when you really want a mixer to be simple, especially if you are holding a guitar and singing! . I have used a Zoom LiveTrak L-12 Mixer for years and incorporates 12 ins DAW connection, card connections and separate recording and 5 programmable Monitor / Headph outs etc etc. If I see something better I'll get it and although this looks amazing I think I'll stay where I am for the moment. Great video, thanks mate! Could you please let me know if the gigcaster can overdub on each track? Also wondering if it provides for punching in and out? And another I just thought of, is there any ability to sample onto the pads via the onboard mic, and/or through the inputs and what is the size limit per sample? Lastly, is it able to run off a usb battery brick, to be fully portable? Thanks again mate, great video.

So regarding the recording, it’s recording to Micro SD card and recording the live audio coming in, so no to overdub and punching as it’s solving the issue of having a separate recorder. It does and can however record each track separately if you wish. I’ll d find out the max size limit for you with the pads and finally, I ran it off a battery brick in the beginning with USB-C, so yes. 👍🏻

@@JohnPaulMusicUK thank you so much for the speedy response mate, appreciate it greatly! That's a shame about the overdub and punching being absent, particularly the former. So that means the ability to layer up multiple guitar parts, using the excellent sounds on the guitar channel isn't possible? You only get to lay down one part per track? Excellent about the battery brick capability though, and I'll look forward to hearing about the pads, when you get a chance. Thanks again for the informative and very helpful content mate, I follow you on the RC600 too, great stuff!
Think it’s probably awesome for streaming but I’m not sure about a gigging use case, very interested to see if you shed any gear in making this work live JP, waiting with interest

Used it last night for a Charity gig. Fed my looper and another mic into it and recorded the whole thing to SD card whilst plugging my phone in and live streaming at the same time. Here you go - C.A.L.M Charity Gig - Liberty Bell Coffee House kzread.info5XqnCF1HFxA?feature=share
Been looking for something like this for a long while. It was either for Podcasts or for musicians without the features we really need. Been using a Bose T1 small console for 5 years but need something more up to date. Questions: 1. How would you setup this unit for guys like me that have a one man band show (Guitar, Vocal and backup tracks) 2. Looking to visualize how I can upgrade to my current setup. 3. Any other options you might recommend? Looking forward to your reply and perhaps your email to ask you a few other questions already have… thanks for this killer video… ✌️

Guitar on 1, Vocal on 2, 3 &4 Stero for the backup tracks from whatever device you play that.
i take it, you can multi-track record on it? Like basically, stick the drums down in 1-2 tracks, a base line, and vocals. Yeah, I've been looking at the tascam L12, or one Zoom H8 (or any hand held 32 bit float recorder), as a solution for playing a few instruments, and jamming/rehearsing etc ----- but this looks like a serious 3rd option.
Thank you so much for this thorough review! I can see from the comments below that you've successfully connected the USB-C to your iPhone. Awesome! That's one big question answered. The second is this: Have you used the "mix minus" feature with your iPhone? Presumably this will work the same as a laptop...? Thanks!

Yeah just remember to use the camera connection kit for iPhone’s. Not used it yet - gonna be testing it so I’ll keep you informed. Yes it’s meant to work in the same way. 👍🏻
In a live gig situation do you run out of the gigmaster to powered speakers or is it used as only as a feed to the livestream?
@JohnPaulMusicUK
Жыл бұрын
Yes you would run out to powered speakers.. there are dedicated output jacks on the back for that and you can feed a live stream AS WELL if you like 👍🏻 I’m using it at a gig tonight to record the audio from my looper and another mic for compère into the SD card and have some good console sound/EQ going to the PA whilst live streaming from the USB-C out of the back to my iPhone (with USB-C to lightning cable I got with my iPhone. Pretty sweet!
You sing great mate!!:🎉

How does it compare to the new rodecaster DUO series ?
Any compression on this thing? Would you recommend using this with Logic for more compressors, third party pluggins ect.?
@JohnPaulMusicUK

Yes there is compression and lots of effects you could use. Have a look at this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gYp8rcFpadzaedY.htmlsi=9VtzfXv9bvzOxG6v
So there’s 4 xlr combi inputs on the back and 1 high Z input on the front? Is that it for instrument/mic inputs? The faders don’t seem to correspond with the inputs … hmm …
@JohnPaulMusicUK
Жыл бұрын
Yes. So channel one has the high Z input but also has the first combo jack if you wanted to plug a mic into channel 1 instead. Then there are 3 more for channels 2-4, then faders are USB, Phone (aux input on front), USB, pads and finally master.
Heads spinning……. I tunes dictates what you can play as backing tracks…which leaves me totally frustrated on great tracks I have that I can’t use. Would this overcome that problem ie I can store anything? What is the memory and storage like? Thank you
Does it have gain for mic inputs like the shure sm7b or would I need a mic pre amp to connect it to this?
@JohnPaulMusicUK

yes it has gain. when you go into each channel you can set the gain on the touch screen. all good. no cloud lifter needed.
Can you send different channels to different headphone outs? Using this a a way to get more outputs Like if I’m a one man band sending channels from this mixer to front of house… or using the headphone outs as monitor outs…
This thing is so cool, it looks like it has volume for four separate sets of headphones, but can you have a separate mix in each of the headphones, or at least between the headphones and the usb out for example? If you're live streaming, for example, and you're singing and playing guitar, I usually want the mix the audience hears to be a little bit different than what I want to hear in my own headphones (I usually want more of my own vocals in my ears, and this goes double if I'm mixing in other instruments like if I was with a band or something). I'm guessing that's probably not possible with this, but still, this thing is amazing for an all-in-one device, the effects alone are really cool, and for like podcasting or just as a small portable solution for solo gigs or whatever, I can see this being really useful for certain people. :)
In the computer can it record each input individually like in audio interface or high end mixer or it will record as single track (left and right mixed) like in normal usb mixer?
@JohnPaulMusicUK

It can do either. You can choose. 👍🏻
Thanks JP. Another fantastic tutorial, mate. I have both the Gigcaster 8 and RC600. I want to use the FX from the Gigcaster for my guitar/vocals, so how do I run it into the RC600 then out my PA speakers? Whats the simplest/quickest way to do this, in your opinion?😄
@JohnPaulMusicUK
Жыл бұрын
Simplest quickest way is plug everything into the Gigcaster and then the output to the RC-600. Downside is you won’t be able to record the RC-600 with the SD card. There is a way around it but it’s complicated.

@@JohnPaulMusicUK Thanks mate. At least, that's a good start. I don't need to record everything, I just want to use it LIVE. Then I'll sort out the complicated stuff later. Cheers
can it make 4 different mixes for the 4 headphone outputs?
