It's great that you can sharpen freehand. I have very shaky hands and don't feel I can maintain a set angle. So I use a Work Sharp Precision Adjust, which does the job I need done. Glad to have your input on what you have experienced. Thanks much!

My personal experience is that no matter how well I sharpen freehand I gradually end up with a slight convex. I do not notice this until I use a guided sharpener. I can't say I notice any improvement in performance but it has given me an appreciation for the convex grind. I also find that I have developed an OCD stropping habit that has almost eliminated my need for regular sharpening. Because of my regular stropping my steel bias seems to be diminishing. Using your tools teaches you things you will learn in no other way.

great job, Erica! very methodical! i am about to dive into the freehand experience myself and between spyderco ceramic benchstones or dmt dia-sharp stone. But i think you are right, stropping is more important and plan on having more strops than stones. Do you think its worth having coarser compounds for stropping progresion, say anywhere between 9 and 3 micron? or is 1 and 0.5 micron enough? thanks!

Rex 45 is my current favorite steel. I have a rex 45 pm2 and a guardian 3. Both have the best edges I've ever experienced using and sharpening, and that's from someone with admittedly way too many knives. For whatever reason, in sharpening I felt the opposite you did in comparison to K390, for me the rex 45 was surprisingly a breeze and k390 was more of the lengthy process I expect from a high carbide/hrc steel. I also got one of the rex 76 mules. Spyderco basically describes the steel as a harder version of rex 45. I can't say much yet because I haven't sharpened it, but it feels promising. I haven't done yard work or camping with it like the rex 45 blades, but none of my household tasks seem to have dulled it even slightly. The only sign of use is a faint patina from slicing apples. The mule itself is also just a great model as far as geometry, ergos etc.

Was your K390 knife a Golden Colorado one by any chance? I personally don't have experience with wither, but I've seen multiple people (Erica included) say their experience with Spyderco's Seiki Japan K390 is quite noticeably different (and preferable) to Golden's K390 (both in terms of edge retention as well as ease of / feel when sharpening)

@@pkennethv No, it's an Endela so it's from Seki City like Erica's Delicas. To be clear, I'm not saying my Endela sharpened badly by any means, just that it takes a long time to remove material, as you'd expect from a steel like that, whereas the rex 45 seemed easier even than a lot of ingot steels or s35vn I've dealt with.

@@FreedomFox1 There was an announcement thread made by TazKristi in the mule team discussion section of the spyderco forum that gave the day and time of release about a week and a half in advance. That seems to be how it's done, that's what they did for the m398 one too. I feel your pain, I tried to get the cruwear shaman twice and more recently the 15v manix. I was only able to get my neutron 2 because someone commented when they were dropping on Erica's review, so I try to pay it forward.
