I happened to watch the American drama Dallas just after watching The Onedin Line--and noted all the similarities between the Onedins and Fogartys and the Ewings and Barneses. As a result I became a fan of both shows.

Those two boys have done a sudden turnaround: Samuel wanted to be a sailor but now he's content to work in a shop and William wanted to be an engineer but now he wants to work in the office. The character development in Elizabeth (from teaser to businesswoman) and Robert (from whingeing old woman to progressive businessman) has been slower and believable - the younger characters less so.

Thanks for adding these. My public library only had up to season 3 years ago, so glad I could watch the rest. Is there a way to unblock Season 5 E 58, episode 60, and episode 61 that seem to be blocked for my country?

Marg Des Thanks for the reply. I just wonder why it’s blocked. I saw earlier in the series someone had emailed the poster and he had replied saying he was sorry he had omitted putting one up. It was then one I watched. I just can’t seem to find how to get in touch with the poster. If you do or if you find it by someone else I would really appreciate you letting me know.. many thanks Carol

What is it with these Victorians getting hot about their cousins ?

Tim Macpherson Marrying your first cousin was perfectly acceptable in the early 1800s, and the practice certainly offered some benefits: Wealth and property were more likely to remain in the same hands, and it was easier for young women to meet and be courted by bachelors within the family circle. Later in the 19th century, though, marriage between cousins became less common. Increased mobility due to the growth of the railroad and other widespread economic improvements vastly broadened a young lady’s scope of prospective husbands. Meanwhile, the Victorian era saw a rise in awareness of birth defects associated with reproduction among relatives. Cousin marriages remained popular among the upper class, however. Charles Darwin married his first cousin Emma Wedgwood, for instance, and Queen Victoria and Prince Albert were themselves first cousins.

@@veronicas1231 Interesting yes. From a genetic/evolutionary perspective I would expect there to be an inbuilt biological predisposition not to be attracted towards children one grew up with from an early age. I'm sure such an idea has research backing, but I haven't looked for references (as yet). Maybe these cousin marriages were often almost intergenerational (man being much older), which might explain it.
