The ONE thing Cambodia does better than Vietnam

This Cambodian kid living on a farm in the jungle speaks better English than any Vietnamese kid.
She goes to a local school and learns English from a Cambodian teacher. Cambodians are behind Vietnamese on every education metric yet I was shocked to hear people in the jungles speaking better English than university graduates in Vietnam. (Ngoc our foreign correspondent was a law student and in a top university in Hanoi yet her English sounded trash compared to this fruit selling kid in the outback of Cambodia on a dusty road in the middle of nowhere selling fruit for pennies).
The English schools in Vietnam mainly rely on under qualified teachers from overseas who can't even speak Vietnamese. So decades later the average Vietnamese speaks absolutely rubbish English despite paying a king's ransom in tuition fees. Local teachers would be better value for money but a scandal years ago scared the locals off using local teachers.

I noticed that in Cambodia, some remote places, the kids speak better english than I do. I guess it's something natural ability to pick up new language rather then sorts of teachers they get. America got Spiderman, Batman, and Vietnam will get some Troyman or Vietman whose only duty is to fight foreign teachers.

I just think they’re getting paid a lot for substandard results. But as long as the locals believe the hype not much anyone can do.

Kids who go to the international schools obviously speak incredible English but their parents must be so rich as the terms can cost over 200 million. Most people do not have 400 million a year for schooling. Next best thing is a language centre and to get them consuming a lot of English speaking media.

Not sure about all of vn but in hanoi, English class is a requirement from grade 1-12. Troy, fyi. The girl wasn't translating, she was interpreting. Translate is the written word. Interpreting is the spoken word.

Living in the Philippines and easy to see that English fluency in youth is a direct result of media consumption from youtube, movies from hollywood, and social media. Adults don't learn that way but kids do.Unpopular opinion: Tablets (or smartphones) with internet are a godsend for kids to learn english with ZERO effort and ZERO language schooling.

I’d say Vietnam needs more foreign (qualified) English teachers, not less. The level of spoken English in cities is embarrassing.

Its weird because the standard to teach in an International school is higher than it is in the UK. But obviously to work in an English language centre is a lot different as the wage is about 50% of a professional teacher in the UK.
