I don't know if there is a more fitting symbol for the times we live in then people drawing Dragon Fangs on their neighbors doors, its like the internet in a nutshell for some time now. Great job, just enough info for someone heading into the series and excellent artwork.

I read these books, which was not easy at all because there are 12 of them ... although I read them TWICE, it would be difficult for me to explain the content, characters, essence ... this masterpiece did not deserve a comparison with The Lord of the Rings because they are two highlights of epic fiction and they are quite different ... The wheel of time is more to my taste and I think the story is much more imaginative so I sincerely look forward to the series ... hopefully the best ...

This may start to sound pervy, but it’s not meant to be. It is a legit opinion about how RJ used sexual imagery to describe how to access the channelling system, so please bare with me. The differences in the way men and women are described to access the one power, particularly when they are first learning, greatly resembles the differences between men’s and women’s mental states when having sex, particularly when they are inexperienced. Keep in mind the time when he wrote these novels. This was a pre-internet age, so access to “sexual information”, yeah that’s what we’ll call it, wasn’t available to everyone 24/7. Regarding age, both men and women begin to recognize that they may have the ability to channel when they are adolescents or young adults, which correlates with the age of reaching puberty and transitioning from a child to a young man or woman. Aes Sedai describe novices and wilders who are untrained as “fumbling around and not knowing what they are doing” with saidar, which can be commonly compared to many peoples’ first sexual encounters: confusion, excitement, and insecurity due to lack of knowledge. Regarding using Saidar, both Moraine and Verin describe to Egwene and Nynaeve that in order to access Saidar they must concentrate on a flower opening and relax as if a river is flowing around you. The key for reaching Saidar is being in the moment, relaxation of the mind, and letting your emotions flow over you. Don’t try to force your way to Saidar, just let Saidar flow over you. A comparison of having difficulty reaching Saidar could be made to a woman having difficulty “finishing” during sex. A woman who is tense, letting her mind wander to other things (not being in the moment), or is just generally uncomfortable will have a more difficult time “finishing”. However, if she relaxes her mind, lets her emotions flow over her like a river, and doesn’t try to force it, “finishing” will come more easily and more reliably. Regarding accessing Saidin, I believe the descriptions of how to reach Saidin come from Asmodean and later from Rand. They describe it as a struggle for control and a constant battle to wield it without letting Saidin overwhelm you. The process is a contradiction to the one for women to reach to Saidar. The comparison to sex for men, especially less experienced men, could be made to the struggle of trying not to “finish” too soon. It can be a mental struggle for men to control their focus and not let the feeling overwhelm. They must learn to recognize when the feeling is becoming too intense and pushing them beyond control so that “finishing” is not out of their control. If you’ve read this far, I thank you. From a broader perspective RJ’s design of the one power may emphasize some of the uniqueness or opposing strengths and weaknesses of men and women and how, when used in cooperation, can bolster the positive effects of both. He touches on this when describing the era before the breaking when male and female Aes Sedai would cooperate to form larger circles than either gender could form solely of their own gender, thus enhancing their power when they cooperate. While this may be less of a sexual metaphor than the processes described above, it may be more of a social commentary. A “teamwork makes the dream work” sort of analogy. Anyway, if this analysis already exists on 100 forums and is commonly discussed throughout the community, I am unaware, so please don’t flame me. This is something I thought about after reading the series the first time years ago, but I haven’t had the opportunity to discuss it with anyone. I think this may me a good community in which to mention it. Thanks for taking the time to read the longest comment on KZread.
