    RC is an old school coach and not really good with handling star players. He was lucky with Dirk being most humble guy ever and it was a fit with RC. He never really adapted to the modern game and his defense is always mid at best. But I got to give him credit when it comes to working with average player-material. He seems to get the most out of those kind of players, especially on offense. As someone who's "hometeam" is the Knicks, even we were on the fence at first on whether Brunson was worth all that money. Of course now we see what a bargain he was, but at the time he wasn't really proven yet outside of one playoff run (Actually it was really only the Jazz series. I hear you guys KP missed games but the problem with him and luka was Luka showed him no respect. Luka would do anything to avoid giving him the rock even when he was playing well. If you recall in that good playoff run they had carlisle had to demand they get kp the ball. Luka was selfish and lost a good teammate because of it. Celtics could win it this year.

  • @jajanka10

    KP's game has had only two changes after Dallas- he has become ruthless in exploiting post-up mismatches. And being on the floor more. People forget those awkward post-game interviews KP had to give as a Maverick. Reporters, of course, saw that after scoring in 20s at half of 3/4 he usually got 2 shots in 4th. And put KP on the spot. Those were juicy soundbites at the time. He did not call out names, but Rick and Luka did not like 'it's just the plays we choose to play as a team' for sure :D At some point people leaving/getting traded out of Dallas only to flourish is telling more a story of who Luka is, or better, has yet to become, and less about 'failed' co-stars.

  • @mouseinthehouse_

    @mouseinthehouse_

    6 ай бұрын

    Huh? Why are you talking like any of what you said is true? It had nothing to do with Luka. KP was absolute garbage for the Mavs and could never stay healthy. He could not post up smaller players, he could not defend the pick and roll, he would not set actual screens, he didn't shoot the three very well and the most important thing - he would always be inefficient. Those are the facts. Carlisle had him as a floor spacer in that series precisely because he could not do anything else. Go back and watch the games, you will see lots of post up plays called for KP - it would end either with the smaller player stealing the ball from him or KP failing to back down the smaller player and missing a midrange. That's why Carlisle abandoned KP offense, because it was losing the Mavs games.

    The KP-Project failed because #1 KP could not stay healthy. He had 2 really good stretches playing out of his mind and looking like the number 2 option they wanted. But whenever he got rolling he also got injured for a few weeks. Reason #2 is Rick Carlisle using him wrong. He had no system for him, everything was tailored around Luka and KP ended up being a decoy in the corner or if he was lucky he was allowed to shoot logo 3s after a screen or as trailer. To be fair KP´s post game was really bad for a 7´3 guy back then and Coach probably didn´t trust him but they also didn´t develope him.

    I don't think they hate each other honestly. I just think people thought they would have this great friendship as two european young stars, but they just had a "Ok teammate relationship". It was a good try to pair them, but it just didn't work out because of KP's injuries, Luka's emotions and lack of experience and, in my opinion, Carlisle never figuring out how to use them. I feel like Porzingis also understood after Dallas what type of shots he should look for, he is much more selective now and is much smarter with his shot selection, even looking for free throws wich also helps a lot.

    What I think happened: Luka had been in Dallas for a couple of seasons, cemented as the new face of the franchise and suddenly KP shows up looking like young Dirk from some parallel dimension. KP was the face of a big market franchise, so he expected to share the spotlight. Still, he was a guy who at the time of the trade was still recovering from an ACL tear and later on was heavy load-managed. By the time KP shook his rust off, three things were clear as day: He was not the same NY KP anymore and played much more conservatively; Carlisle didn't know how to handle a recovering all-star in KP and an egomaniac in Luka on the same court at the same time; Luka saw that KP was not performing as good as he did in his last year in NY and was not available half the time, so he decided he's putting himself first. I guess both of them have a similar character at some level, difference being KP keeps everything professional and Luka expresses himself.

    Luka is topping the NBA list of average shots per game in the last few seasons. He is an amazing talent and his passing skills are extraordinary, but it’s a team sports and you cannot win a game on your own. A true leader needs to be humble and supportive towards others and I believe Luka is not. This is also why Celtics are performing this season, they don’t have a single star attempting to get all the shots and all the stats for himself, but rather a buch of equally skilled ballers. And yes, I also think Luka is a baby. :D

Put him on the post on the elbow, giving him dirks play but kp struggled a lot n couldnt post over shorter defender. And thats when shaq n chuck complained on national tv abt why carlisle didnt use kp more so rick had to lie n defended him by saying he 'didnt need to post up' n 'post up is dead' . Then bubble happen n kp finally 100% and luka kp looked awesome for a few week until kp injured his knee again. Those clips of luka ignoring kp are from 20/21 seasom after his another offseason injury n he was really at the bottom struggling doin everything. As a Mavs fan that watched basically every game of KPs tenure I’m not sure how a video can be made about this without mentioning KPs lack of availability during his time with the Mavs. Guy literally played less than half of the games in Dallas then when he did play wanted the offense to incorporate him. The team couldn’t develop an identity and him and Luka couldn’t figure it out. Luka wasn’t perfect but it was just as much KPs injuries that killed it. As soon as he was traded the team started to develop their identity and made a deep run. I think it could have worked with less ego and more consistency but it didn’t…

Idc about Rick, Luka is toooooooo fricken talented to not have an ability to lift up a player like KP coming back from injury. Yet, it’s your team not mine. I know you definitely have seen the nuances and little stuff that has created your opinion. But I’m going to hold Luka to MVP standard when he’s that talented.

    Luka/KP rivalry started way before Dallas. You could already see differences between them after 2017 Latvia-Slovenia Eurobasket game. KP approached Luka after the game extremely hyped and happy, kind of, I am in the NBA and will help you/guide you into it when you get drafted and Luka was all cold towards him, kind of like, I don't need your help, I'm way better than you. I felt this same energy when KP joined Dallas - he was over-excited at first about playing with Luka but Luka was cold the entire time. Luka was also jealous about KP's fame in New York and that he earned 5 times more than him + wasn't shy to show it off the court

Luka, however, has been a diva since he was 15 and still is. Just to put this in perspective - KP was earning around $30m per season while Luka was earning ~$8m in Dallas. What I am going to say tho is that it says a lot about a player and a person, what they do after the fact. And honestly here I like KP's version better - You admit to your own mistakes and don't hold grudges, because, honestly - those don't really help everyone. KP was very much hurt during his Dallas days or recovering from an injury. I don't think he was fully healthy at any point. And this is why part of the reason why it didn't work. Had they gone into the pick-and-roll offense with those two, it would have been impossible to stop and defend. You would like have to bring in at least two more defenders for it, but for one reason or another, this never happened. If I was Carlyle and had these two talents on my team I would call for their pnr plays all game long until they would just start doing it without calling it. Two guys like this should have been down right illegal to put on the same team... The game isn't that hard if you have this level of talent... Something definitely was going on.

    Only who we can blame here is coach. But overall Dallas Mavericks organization did few strange things. 1) They drafted Dennis Smith Jr. and after getting Luka Doncic traded him like DS Jr. has no value. 2) Mavericks was trash team in defense - only players who been solid in defense was Porzingis and Dorian-Finnley Smith (both get traded). 3) Porzingis was in same situation with Bradley Beal in Wizards - I mean there was PG who is ball dominant same as Luke but for KP it's seems was ok and he didn't care much but made better stats then in Mavericks - of course Wizards was not even close to Play-off zone. 4) Luka have Irving as teammate - one of best ever PG by skill in today NBA - they do along fine, but I don't feel like Mavericks is potential Championship team - something still missing. Porzingis look like have best time for now in his carrier with Boston Celtics and doing fine with his teammates. If Luke will not be in NBA finals next two years I believe he will ask for trade because he will give up on Mavericks who can't bring him right players in organization to fight for title.

    KP failed in Dallas because Rick Carlisle and the Mavs utilized him as a spot-up shooter. There have been many discussions whether it was because he came from his knee injury so they tried to play him safe or Mavs coaching was at fault because they did not want to use him as a big PF or true C for some reason (I believe it was coaching). I have been watching Mikes videos for years and this is the first time I see such lack of information. Also I watched many Mavs games with KP on the roster and it was evident he was capable of doing more than he was asked to! KP is loyal to his teams. He trusts his coaches. @@MrEdzis122 And? That still does not change the fact that for one, he missed over 50% of his games with the Mavs and he repeatedly went down during crucial moments. Second the Mavs tried dozens of setups but Porzingis sucked, period. The guy could not even post up frigging guards as a seven foot center. It did not help that he was repeatedly out and when he came back he disrupted the flow of the offense. Then of course there is the fact that he could not accept that Luka is strictly the better player. There is a reason that Luka managed to help his country win a gold medal and won titles in Spain alongside multiple MvPs. Luka could have retired before going to the NBA and would have had a case of getting into the HoF on his Euro accolades alone at the age of 19. Let that sink in for a second. Oh and when he won gold with Slovenia he played second option to Dragic. Explain to me how that worked that Luka can in fact adjust to playing a lesser role on scoring and still help his team win while Porzingis could not during his stint with the Mavs. I cannot wait for the rationalizations. I will give Porzingis that much, he was a huge help for the Mavs defence due to his great rim protection and he was not too shabby as a help defender either. That has to be acknowledged and the Mavs defence sucked terribly after his departure. He also had stretches where he did well on offense but that usually was when his 3 point shot was falling. If that did not happen, he was a detriment on offense usually.

    this take that kristaps has just accepted this role now and the mavs have had success w/o him take is a bit disingenuous. it was clear to see that it wasn't just luka but coaching staff decisions that made it hard for kp to thrive; when he was given offensive freedom the mavs almost and likely would've beat the clippers if kp doesn't get injured and from there we have no clue what happens. in boston's system he is not relegated to be a catch n shoot stretch 4, he gets his post touches and even is allowed to handle the ball or immediately be involved in pnr at the top of the key early in the shot clock. on any given night he is 1-4th the best player on the roster; you can't just write him off as someone who knows his role bc he could've been number 2 in dallas and is an effective 3 and number 2 sub in boston. dallas and luka mismanaged the whole situation, that's not on kp. the argument would make more sense if he was doing the same things in boston but just better bc he's in a new place. that's not it at all, he is actually being used the way he wanted and the team is winning
