Matt D’Avella: TF? Thomas Frank: “The most hipster method possible” Matt D’Avella: Natalie, the voice is back... (calls Dustin Hoffman) In all seriousness, thanks for another great video. I believe you already taught me about a zero theory in “How Benjamin Franklin planned his day”, and I have heard that the founder of Walmart had a sunset/clean desk policy as well. Tidying up, as you said, to reduce decisions the next day. Would be worth a link to the Ben Franklin video next time you put one out. Also, on using a phone, I’ve read and heard that, just like alcohol, screen usage can delay GOOD rest, even if you pass out hard. Keep up the great work!

Lately I've been so obsessed with improving my morning routine. I think we view nightly routines as uninspiring, since we're basically just preparing for sleep. Obvious things like caffeine are a no no late at night, but I loved your idea of creating a "wind down alarm" as a reminder to finish up any tasks were currently doing and to not start any new ones. Well done!

• Figure out what time to go to bed. • Set an alarm for the next morning (Where you ideally don't wake up in the middle of deep sleep). • Set an alarm for 1 hour before you want to go to bed. • Give yourself 10 more minutes after that alarm to let yourself get whatever work you were doing done. • Don't be on a screen an hour before bed. • Take 15 minutes to "reset your living space" e.g. do the dishes, pack your bag, pick out your clothes for the next day etc... • Review how your day went (What habits you did etc...) for 15 minutes e.g. write in a diary etc.. • Take 5 minutes to brush your teeth etc... • Take 15 minutes to stretch, do yoga, read a fiction book etc... You all better listen to this. Designing a solid night time routine is something I'm thankful I've done. My sleep has never been better and it shows!
my night routine is somewhat like this (more or less) : 1) cleaning the room 2) taking any meds, filling bottles, preparing workout material for the morning after 3) planning the day ahead and also checking what all habits i checked off today (notion!!!) 4) watch some youtube (as a reward but not something "funny" just self-development type) + reviewing the day through journaling 5) doing some guided meditation in order to fall asleep in minutes and i drink a lot of water while doing all this this obviously fails sometimes mostly when the meditation fails to calm me down and other times when i get lost on youtube cuz thats quiet likely to happen but u need to stop urself- do what we do scooby doo \00/ [and yeah this is part of the night time routine~ that is, watching this video
tom, i've been watching your videos for years now and besides the admirable crazy amount of research you pour into making those - what makes them amazing is that they're so fun to watch that intro to the video got me totally hooked. it feels like i'm watching a movie. we already know what the video's going to be about because it has a title and yet, your intro was so interesting and got us hoping for more. it's amazing how your uploaded videos never been bad but they keep getting better.

I love my night routine now, especially as I'm not a morning person and want my mornings to be as simple and short as possible. I have a wind down alarm and I get up from watching Netflix to tidy/prepare my clothes/lunch/bag. I do this to expend physical energy so I don't toss and turn in bed so much. Then I brush my teeth and read until I need to sleep and turn off the light. It usually takes me 2 hours to fall asleep because I used to be on my phone all the time but it's really improving without my phone. I have anxiety so I use my phone to avoid my thoughts, which are hard to avoid when going to sleep. Reading has helped change my thoughts from one topic to another, and I'll generally try to choose something to read that is emotionally neutral (nonfiction is pretty good for this, like books about space! But nothing about politics or social issues because those generate fake arguments in my mind and pull at my emotions from being so frustrated/horrified with the issues in the world. Those are day reads, not night reads).
Great video man. Yeah i definately feel as though everyone over hypes the morning routine but people forget that the bedtime routine is usally more important. Im glad you touched on this somewhat fogotton topic. Il be trying these methods and reporting my findings :)
The quality of your videos has increased substantially. Excellent work👌

I've also been using a wind down alarm for years now. There've been times when it worked better and times when it didn't work so well. In general I feel better the next day when I follow a wind down routine.
this video is better quality than Netflix docs
Thanks so much Thomas! I’ve recently been working on my morning and night routines and I’ve been wondering what I could do at night besides “no screens” and writing in my planner. I really like the idea of resetting my workspace because right now my studio and bed share a room so waking up and seeing everything organized should definitely help me avoid distractions the next day!

My night routine consists of: sneaking food into my room and watching youtube till my eyes burn

Thomas, to me the most effective way to fall asleep is reading. Is the best way to relax, and forget about everything until I fall asleep. Also having a piece of paper where i can write what is my mind helps a lot too.
My night routine is an important part of my day, but I think I could integrate some of your suggestions. Currently, I brush my teeth, read for at least 30 minutes, meditate for 15-30 minutes, and go to bed. Preparing for the next day sounds really helpful, and I would like to get a journaling habit going as well.
I have been waiting for this since you did you 1 hour morning routine! Thank you!

Hi! Francophone here. I would personally translate “mise en place” to “setting the stage” in this case. It does mean putting everything in its place, but it also encompasses all the prep work required to do so (i.e. for a chef, cutting veggies and placing in bowls, etc). Hope that’s interesting to someone :)
