It is not your fault! Amber lived a very long and happy life, and she totally knew how much you loved her! As a chicken owner myself, I know exactly how easily it can be to accidentally lose a bird, so the fact that she survived to this old of an age speaks highly of your care for her and all your animals. I don’t think it’s anything you did that she got too cold or anything, I think she lived such a long life and her time had come. You did the best you could to make her comfortable and she got to pass peacefully. She’s in heaven now ❤️

I had this *EXACT* situation with one my hen's this past week. She was doing OK, quite thin, then suddenly went down hill. I did the same as you, took her in, warmed her, and kept her warm. She passed away within a few hours. She was the same as yours, getting thin etc. So I think for me, regardless of the cold it was on the way to happening and the cold just made it worse. As sad as it is, what I took comfort from is that she didn't pass in an uncomfortable/cold place. She didn't suffer. She was lovely and cosy and just went to sleep. You did your best and provided comfort and warmth and let her pass in peace.

I recently lost my second oldest, black cat. This past december. He showed no signs of poor health, he was 15 but he was still appearing like his healthy age. He greeted me when I came home from work, I pet him, I went up to my room for bed he snuggled with my roommate. Then in the morning he was gone. We had him all 15 years. It still is devastating and we're still grieving.

I had a hen who turned 14, her name was void and she passed away last year, I never could’ve imagine a chicken could live so long when healthy, I loved her, best hen I’ve had, she had such personality. But they don’t live forever, that’s the thing about most animals, we won’t have them forever, and birds in general are experts at hiding that they’re sick, that by the time you notice that they’re sick, they’re too far gone.

I can not believe I've been with @white house on the hill and Jake & Becky and each child from the very beginning. When I got my own chickens. I was there with y'all when you were doing the children's books, the parade, Halloween and when you went with out electricity for a week! 😆 Through Bamboo and Cashew and Peekaboo and of course Amber! I remember Bubbles, I remember when the boys named the Ducks!! I loved the name green lantern!!I've been there through the contest and giveaways. I always tried to win the incubators.😆 I've seen you get every animal you've got! And all the changes from the move from the original White house on the hill to here! From building your first chicken tractor to the mobile coup, to the use of the old cow milking stantion, to the build of the aviary and the horse barn.Ive shared your grief with losing your beloved animals. I feel like y'all are family, or good neighbors! I've been in Missouri and wished I could have popped in and met you! Your always in my thoughts.

My favorite chicken died last summer at the age of 10, but not from her age, but rather a wild animal got to her unfortunately. I was so sad, she would still lay an egg here and there, and apparently decided she wanted to hatch out chicks, and was hiding in a shrub pile with a small stack of her eggs when she was taken. We miss her still. So sorry for your loss.

Everyone's beloved companions and animals are dying this year so far. 😢 We lost our two senior dogs; one at home after a seizure in December, and the other from acute liver failure as we got her to emergency care three weeks later.... Reef doctor lost his first octopus, Brian Barczyk passed (related to animals and a specific animal community), and you guys lost your first chicken. There have been others I can't even think of right now. This year seems so dim thus far.... My condolences. I hope the rest of the flocks keep warm and stay healthy. You guys took her passing better than I would've. Do you compartamentalize a specific way, doing what you do for a living, out of curiosity? Even when we've had livestock type animals around, it wasn't any different to losing a companion for me.... Best wishes for the coming year.

Oh life! At times you really kick us and at times we wonder why that happened now. Today is Burns Night in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 where we celebrate our bard Robert Burns who wrote the song Auld Lang Syne, that you used at the end of the video. Traditionally it’s sung at Hogmanay (New Years Eve) and Ne’erday (New Years Day) all over the world. This has been the worst Christmas and Ne’erday for my family and I, I’ve had a trapped nerve since the mid of December which once medicated I was too drowsy or in pain to join in or prepare for Christmas. Then just a week into the New Year my mum suffered a tear in her aorta that resulted in doctors telling us to prepare for her passing, she was too ill for surgery and her kidneys were failing. I’ve been brought up on Burns and other folk singers, I’d sing to my unresponsive mum wishing her pain away. Thankfully she rallied and we have her home on palliative care but she’s actually doing better than me, I’m loaded with a cold/flu that’s attacking my throat so I’m already so miserable as I can’t go visit her incase I pass anything on, so I’m at my home crying for a beautiful chicken I’ve never met! Rest in peace Amber you served your family so well and deserve your rest now 🐓🐓

It is always hard when you lose a beloved companion. We lost our favorite hen, a super friendly Speckled Sussex named Sophie, this past year and for a long time I struggled to go into the coop. (I was the one that found her.) My son was devastated (he was 100% her kiddo) so I grew a special little garden with flowers and herbs in her memory for the wildlife to enjoy and that helped. (I started gardening many years ago to help me with the grief of losing a child, and chickens became a natural extension of gardening.) Sophie’s garden will be quite a bit bigger this year, and I cannot wait to see it grow.

Oh dear my eyes are leaking. Life looks very hard on the farm during this weather but to loose an old friend makes things seem so much worse. My daughter rescues chickens and because of their hard lives they come to her very bedraggled, she gives them everything they need to recover. They often don't live to long but I tell her she has given them grass to walk and dig in and sunshine on their wings and the chance to be a chicken. ❤❤

I find that when a chicken stops moving and doing a lot (even having their head down low), they are sick and probably need some meds, love, and attention. I always keep my sick chickens close just in case they do pass but I also try to do what I can to get them better. I've had it happen several times. Recently lost my beloved Road Island Red just a month ago who was one of my first hens. I sat with her for an hour when it become clear she was dieing and petted her head. I completly understand how you feel when loosing a chicken and sorry for your loss.

We all hate it when you loose a beloved pet.We just lost one of our dog's whom we had rescued as a sickly, 5 or 6 week old pup. He became my husband's best buddy for almost 15 years. I have a chicken that's ten years old, and she was able to make it through our freezing temperatures which was not as bad as yours but it was still pretty cold. she may be healthy and happy now but still six months ago she was really thin like amber, I ended up putting her in my brooder with some chicks so she won't get bothered by the other chickens, and then the next day she decided to adopt the chicks and slowly she started to gain back weight and now she's my electricity free heat lamp. I think having her see chicks with so much energy inspired her to be very active again and want to try to live so she can raise the chicks right now she's returning the favor by inspiring a rooster who's lost his only friend to raccoon and got really badly injured himself. she my first chicken and spark will be my chicken i will never forget

We had some of our buckets freeze like that black one. I think it’s because the ice expands so much and make it do that. It broke some of our 5 gallon buckets.

I know how this feels well, only a month ago I lost my first ever hatch bird Poe. He was hatched with 4 other birds and after two died the other 3 ended up being Roos, him and his brothers were my babies and one by one they all died leaving just him. He was so special to me and it was really really hard losing him.

I have an Easter egger that looks almost exactly like Amber, named Quench. She's a fiercely independent girl. She's the only one still leaving the coop to wander the yard. As for what happened I think her time was just up. If she had already gotten sick just a few months earlier the end was likely near. It sounds like her overall health was declining and she couldn't take the stress of another winter. Even if you had kept her inside for the winter the summer heat was just as likely to finish her. There was nothing more to do. When a bird gets old and sensitive it's just a matter of time. At least at the end she got to warm up under the light and relax in a calm quiet enclosure. It's better than most chickens get.

I completely understand and offer my sincerest condolences on Amber. I lost my oldest chicken, Speedy, this past year as well. I had gotten her also back in 2016 as a chick when I was just starting to get in to raising chickens. Man, Speedy survived many below 0 nights, animal attacks, and sick flock mates. In the summer of 2023, my family and I could tell she was fading fast, so one morning we set her in the shade of a couple trees near the coup as we cleaned it so that she could get some fresh air. During that time, she passed away. I am so thankful that God allowed her to live so long and to die soaking in the view of the yard that she had for so many years explored. R.I.P. Speedy ❤

Oh so hard when you lose a friendly chicken. Felt the same about predators and took care of my little bantams that we “inherited” them when we bought our house. Three taken by predators and two died of old age or an illness. RIP Amber. Nice send off for her.

Here is something I once saw that helped to move large ostriches. If you take a tube sock and cut the toe off you can use it as a blindfold that stays on a bit easier and frees up both your hands. How to put it on is you put the sock over your hand then grab their beak and quickly slip it on.

Well you did it, you put a lump in my throat about the loss of Amber the chicken. I never think twice about eating chicken but I feel so sad for the loss of this bird. But then I think of every pet I've ever lost, including chickens, and I remember that it is a sad thing. We wouldn't have pets in our lives if there was no love or affection for them.
