The Olight i3E + 10440 Mystery - A Possible Solution

When 10440 lithium rechargeable batteries are put in the Olight i3E EOS, the results are mixed. Some lights are able to function using the cells while others will not. In this video I share a possible solution to the issue (or perhaps it’s just a clue).

    Thank you! Yeah it’s weird how some i3Es accept 10440s right off the bat and others do not.

    Hi, you're absolutely right about the tail piece or negative terminal is bare metal. The old military lights had an issue that requires a Energizer battery because it has that type of bottom. It made contact on the bottom side of the battery and a battery that wasn't trimmed or aluminum foil was added to would not work. It's been a long time though.

    An other theory : 10440 are longer : some light bodies might be little bit shorter so the electrical junction between body and head could not be ok… Love you channel :-)

    Just for an additional data point. I have a black I3E EOS I just bought yesterday (dec 23), it was the package "deal" from Amazon with the I3T. Both my Flat top Vapcell 10440 & Button top 10440 work in in the I3E. Nether have over shrunk wraps, nor is the light a special edition.

    The 10440 is a bit longer so it won't let you screw the cap fully to get contact between the battery tube and the circuit board. Probably the insulation pressed against the wide end of the spring and added a fraction of a millimeter. The snow flake one may have a thinner section wire spring ... just enough to make the difference. I know i shouldn't. But I flattened the battery knocking it on the head a bit and it works... tried with 2 flashlights and 2 different brand 10440

    The thread part or total tube length may be shorter in this body , removing the shrink wrap from the battery allowed the battery to seat closer and let the top reach the negative contact .

    @@PardonMyEnglish I have similar issues with this type of light even using NiMH batteries , not all work .that's why I am now staying away from this style . Originally I had the i3 Eos that was a really nice light , love the wide beam and 3 output unfortunately it died on me. And moved to the smallest 16340 battery size like my current S1 mini baton , better features and bigger output yes it is double the weight .

    I'm wondering if a flat top would do better in this particular scenario. I was looking inside the head of the i3e on hand and think a flat top may work better if it doesn't contact anything else in the head of the i3e

  • @Yeetmaster900
    @Yeetmaster9008 күн бұрын

    Purchased flat top 10440s and they work perfectly fine inside the i3e. If you have a i3e where the 10440 button top isnt working in it use a flat top instead because the button top is top too long to allow your light to make connection from the inner sleeve of the light body to the pcb on the inside of the head.

    I was messing with this problem again today. I noticed 3.7 and 1.2 volt batteries won't work and both batteries are slightly longer than an alkaline. So I filed down the positive end of a 1.2 NiMH to get the same dimensions as a 1.5. Nothing. I sanded down the body of the flashlight by .1 mm. No help. I have contacted Olight & they are going to send out another i3e. As I told them, they will not only not work with a 3.7, they won't work with a 1.2 either. My guess is it has something to do with the depth of threading or number of turns needed to turn on. They turn on with the last quarter turn or so & stop due to the head contacting the milled out shoulders. The light comes on when the head of the light comes down far enough for the body to contact those two negative traces on the PCB. If the head screws down all the way, yet the lower portion of the tube isn't deep enough, the body won't make contact with the negative traces. I can't detect any outer tube differences in measurement. I'll try measuring from the inner base to the top of the tube & see if that's it. There has to be something different between them that can be measured. I haven't found it yet.

    Good to know. Interesting that it seems to come down to minute differences. Thanks again for sharing your findings and for contacting Olight about this. I think something about the negative end of the 10440s was preventing mine from working initially. Ultimately still not sure what’s up since one light accepts all batteries and the other won’t.

    Interesting, I dont bother with lithium for it considering its just a keychain light. Do use a rechargeable NiMH tho and that works fine. Ive found if you cant use lithium, NiMH always does a good enough job in its place.

  • @PardonMyEnglish

    I have not tried that but it’s a good idea. I know others use small magnets to help certain batteries fit in chargers, so that should work in theory.

    So i just bought a black i3t 2 and a black i3e. With normal alkaline aaa the i3t 2 is brighter than the i3e. With nihm the i3t 2 is brighter than the i3e. Odd thing is with the pkcell 10440 they both have the exact same brightness for me. There isnt much that I can find on putting the 10440 in the i3e, but from what ive seen it gets very hot and bright like the original i3t. Mine that seems to have the same 300ish lumens as the i3t 2 with the 10440, doesnt heat up very much even after extended use. Maybe they upgraded the i3e very recently? Regardless just using nihm in the i3e, but thought id put this here

    Size of the spring.. it's to big to hit the exposed area of the bottom of the 10440 cell. Just trimming the heat shrink off the bottom of the cell would prolly get it to work. Either that or they have a diode that blocks power if it's higher than 1.5 volts down by the spring and expoding the side of the bottom of the 10440 cell allows it to hit the side of the tube and bypass the spring and diode.. quick test to verify is take the battery that doesn't work in the black tube and trim the heat shrink only off the bottom of the cell and see if it works. If it does then we know it's the size of the spring and it needing more surface of the bottom of the battery.. and if it don't work and only does when the side is unwrapped then we know it's a small diode that some tubes have.. all lithium cells the entire body, bottom, sides and even a portion of the top are negative points of contact and only the center of the top of a lithium are positive...
