I am also going to show you the quirks and features of the Silhouette, and I will show you how the Oldsmobile Silhouette drives.

If I were to list my favorite reviews, it would include the Vector W8 and this - the 1996 Oldsmobile Silhouette. It would be the only list, ever, that includes both the Vector W8 and the 1996 Oldsmobile Silhouette.

My dad bought one of these vans used and gifted it to me when I was old enough to drive. I was embarrassed of it at first but I eventually embraced how wacky it looked. I named it “The White Bullet” and it soon became the go to car for road trips and group events. Even my girlfriend fell in love with it. Lots of great memories and handies in The White Bullet. Miss you buddy. RIP king!

The lack of built in car seats nowadays probably has to do with constantly changing safety standards. Kids below 40 lbs are supposed to face the back of the car now. You could design a seat and 5 minutes later some regulatory body changes a recommendation and suddenly your built in seat is a "deathtrap"

Look at toddler-sized car seats as well. For side impact protection they have huge side bolsters, it's too hard to integrate that into a normal seat. Even back then, many of these integrated car seats were lumpy, hard, and uncomfortable when retracted.

I know what you mean. These GM vans still look super futuristic to me, especially from the rear. I grew up seeing these space vans all over the road as a kid in the early 00's. I haven't seen one in many years, and it's very sobering to know that nearly all of them have sent to their final resting place. I would absolutely jump at an opportunity to own a clean Lumima APV or Trans Sport.

I just got a car recently that has the on/off power button instead of using a key. Not new at all, but this was actually a thing way back in the 1950s, then was gone for decades before making a comeback around the 2000s or so. So it is interesting to see how things come and go. Sometimes it's just trends, other time they are ideas that just weren't really ready for mass adoption.

I had one of these with the 3800 V6. I liked the feature that the rear seats folded flat and could carry an entire 4x8 foot plank of plywood. I also was in the funeral business and once these rear seats were removed, two cots would fit in nicely. The bodies on the said cots would carry an odor/ the vented rear windows were very useful for this purpose.

Had an older Chevy version of this with the 3.8. Got great mileage on the highway, fairly decent power for the day, about 180 hp at least. I liked the composite body panels, the body never rusted. I didn’t like removing all the seats to carry larger loads, but I could fold all the seat backs down and handled a lot of things that way, on an elevated flat surface. And yes that was a long dashboard. It was good to armor all it so it wouldn’t warp in the sun too much. But it got us through a lot of family trips back in the day.

Another great review. This van was great in looks--quite ageless, which is why I find it worthy of one of your reviews. I've only driven two minivans--a Grand Caravan I rented for a 1400 mile round trip between Phoenix and Napa to move my Mom and her pets in 2000 when she bought her retirement home in Phoenix. I also almost bought a Toyota Sienna, which rode nice but I chose a Camry instead and gave my Highlander which I bought for hauling utility to me wife. That way I had a car with a nice sedan ride (a poor man's Lexus) and great highway and commute fuel economy and a near 500 mile range on the highway--to Socal and back I only had to get gas once, usually around Indio when I'd go there on a vacation with my wife and daughter. My Camry was hit once, the front end was damaged, but it was a strong car and I, unhurt, had it in a body shop and a replacement car in my garage the afternoon of an accident, thanks to a great insurance company. I've quit driving since I live within easy access of public transport now so I do not need the expense of insurance--if I could get a car just for looks, I'd get a Ford Probe or Mazda RX7 which reminds me of a Porsche 924. I also like the mid 80's vintage Camaro or Firebird for looks, or the modern Mustang. My favorite looking Sedan was a Chevy Corsica--drove a Beretta once and my fiance loved it--it had nice power and looks for its days. This genre of GM van was quite nice in looks. The Aston Martin Lagonda was also cool looking--I believe you did an awesome review of that car too. The only drawback of these streamlined vehicles was the windshield blocking the view of the front end. I always liked seeing the front hood so when stopped in traffic I could use the back two tires of the vehicle in front to keep a safe stopping distance which I'd line up with the top of my hood--my driving instructor and also my father taught me that trick and I never rear ended anyone as a result in a half million miles of driving.

This brings back my childhood and if you think this is ugly, just imagine having it in turquoise. I always thought it resembled a Disney monorail with the sloping windshield, the lines down the side, and the door closing music. A couple of things that weren't mentioned (or omitted) in the video: those rear front vents didn't have a way to close the vents, you could only move them up or down. Although they may have been deactivated if the rear vents were turned off. Also, the ashtray in the rear next to the fan controls for all of the kids that smoked in the 90s.

I worked at a dealership when these were new. They had two flaws (IMO): the long nose that made parking a little sketchy, and the overly long reach that was required to clean the interior of the windshield. Otherwise they were absolute gems. The aerodynamic advantage over other vans of the era was very evident when driving in a strong headwind. Oh, the "safety noise" when the sliding door closes was just marketing. GM used a stepper motor to drive the door mechanism. Stepper motors make that noise because of how they are driven.

As always, great review Doug! One note about the rear seats though! While GM indeed was late to the party regarding fold-flat seats, the first-generation Honda Odyssey which came out in 1995 had fold-flat third-row seats, and fold-forward middle-row seats. The Honda also had 4 car-style doors, not a sliding door. Growing up, we had a 1996 Odyssey while my cousins had a 1989 Plymouth Voyager. I remember my parents loving the Odyssey's seats and door config being far superior to the Plymouth which made you remove seats and slam the sliding doors shut with all your strength!

I think that forward panoramic front windshield is actually a pretty elegant design idea, vans with a more "normal" bonnet and windshield often look a bit sloppy. I'm pretty sure this idea was started in mass production by the renault espace which carried this idea in more or less dramatic ways for all of its 5 gens, for almost 40 years. It has drawbacks but also quite a few benefits, including maximizing interior space and luminosity, as well as reducing blind spots. It definitely feels very spacey in this type of vehicle.

My friend just gave me a rusted 2000 Pontiac Montana Luxury after a tornado crushed my Corolla. It’s the same van as the Silhouette though past the “Dustbuster” single sliding door and no fold-flat seats phase. I’m really enjoying this dive into the platform’s history! You mention that there wasn’t much “luxury” in the back but the Silhouette fixed that a few years later by becoming the first minivan with a built-in video entertainment system, standard. Of course, it was just a VHS player with a tiny flip-down LCD but a few short years later it was a DVD player with a widescreen LCD. My 2000 Pontiac Montana Luxury was just a couple years too early for the DVD player and has the exact same VHS entertainment center rebadged “MontanaVision.” I’m not about to start a VHS collection but the only auxiliary input is composite video (yuck!) and that LCD is tiny by modern standards. Still, having a flat-panel display to watch TV was probably the coolest thing in 1998. The bezels are huge so I’m tempted to see if I can swap out the LCD with something more modern while retaining compatibility with the VHS VCP… I bet I could just swap in the 16:9 widescreen one from a later DVD model but it’s still going to be composite-only.

Yep, me too. They looked like a Star Trek shuttlecraft. As fate would have it... my mom bought a 1997 Pontiac Transport. One year off the Dustbuster design. Truth is it was a much better vehicle. It went 200,000 miles before the head gasket got it. My father in law had a 2003 for 200,000 miles as well before the head gasket got it. And I had a 2001 as a jalopy that went 150,000 miles until I sold it running perfectly fine. But you’d never mistake any of those for Captain Kirk’s ride. That’s for sure.

  • @Ksoism

I had a Pontiac one for a while, and it was really great! Fuel economy vs power from that 3.8 wasn't, but everything else. Comfy ride, versatile, damn good seats... I even kind of like the styling! You could toss out any of the five rear seats, and make kids sit in any arrangements you liked, or needed. Vs Chrysler where you usually had two seats in the middle, three at the back. And they were bench seats. Families today don't understand what they are missing. These old minivans were spacious caverns that could swallow pretty much anything when needed, torquey engines with autos, smooth, soft suspensions... Vs SUVs of this day, especially not the very large ones. Flat floor so middle seat isn't a torture point, third row is just like second... Oh, and those side windows - when opened, they were pretty silent, but oh boy did the air circulate! As it went out from all around the window, it didn't feel drafty, but it was effective and near silent. Those roof mounted air vents are god sent in a car that huge. Those rear seats fold up, btw. Seat backs fold onto seats, and they had hinge at the front, so you could get an extra feet of cargo space. And if you took them off, they stacked somehow behind front seats, not well, but it was already helluva lot room. They were heavy, though. Oh, Volvo has had built in child seats even pretty recently, if not now, too.

We had one. As a kid you don’t really think of vehicle styling so much. You’re just excited every time you get to craw into the weirdly shaped van and go somewhere lol. We took the middle seat out in ours from the second row, and put in a in car tv/vhs movie player. That was the coolest thing being able to bring a movie from home, and pop it into the vhs player and watch a movie in the van! Ah the simpler times, where it didn’t take much to entertain us before internet.

We had one of these beasts. Dad found it in 2002 or so for like $600 or $800 and it was our main daily driver until late-2014 or so. I sort of miss it. We got rid of it because the engine started shutting off when driving; dad even had to push the darn thing through a five-way intersection once. I think it was a '93 or '94. The sliding door also pretty much never worked. Cable broke at least three times and I guess it took us a long time to fix it. Same with the passenger window, which wouldn't go up properly, and eventually the driver window too, which stopped working mostly altogether. Speaking of windows, the rear windows were a pain in the sweltering heat! We had a green one and it got HOT in the summer, and naturally the AC didn't work for squat most of the time we had it. Same with the overhead thermometer. Never gave a reading, despite the compass working fine. Dad did eventually fix that up in 2013 or so. We also had the padding off of the passenger door most of its life since dad started to fix the window but never finished. Didn't matter much since people pretty much never sat there. We also often had the third row of seats removed, and I don't think we EVER had the middle-row center seat in. It was alright though, since we only really had my sister, mom and I in it most of the time. Sure was comfy though! I'm surprised you didn't mention the amount of cup holders though. If you count the ones on the seats there's something like sixteen of them in this thing. SIXTEEN! Who could ever drink that much? The controls on the dash always mystified me. The wipers were always a hoot to play around with, as were the lights. Certainly unique there! Standard fog lamps too, and a tach! We also had ABS brakes on ours which were neat, and of course the overdrive stayed on practically the entire life. Overall we put something like 200 or 250k on the thing. Overall I do sort of miss the thing. It was the family car of my childhood and it always mystified me, and it was always there, day after day. The plastic body also kept it from rusting in the good old Wisconsin salt-bath winters, at least on the body. These vans will always have a special place in my heart because of that. When we stopped driving it, dad tossed it at Rawhide or something, so who knows what happened to it. I did see a green Lumina van in my old town though this summer at some auto place, so I stopped and nabbed a photo. Not that I necessarily need one though, since you can still see ours on Google's street view, if you know where and when to look.
