THE OLD MONEY AESTHETIC | How to achieve it

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Hello everyone! This week we're exploring the Old Money Aesthetic and how to achieve it.
So what is this old money aesthetic that we've been seeing all over TikTok? It's basically picking those classic, upscale elements that we know from the affluent world - think pearls, tweed, summers in Nantucket, winters in Gstaad - and creating a look that is at the same time discreet and glamourous.
To me this isn't exactly a trend, given the high content of classic pieces and cuts, but I guess it's nice to be an early adopter for once ;)
Enjoy!

I’m only one minute in and let me just say Old Money aesthetic is all about quality not quantity. They rarely even showcase the brands they are wearing it’s just about looking refined and chic. Old Money means I have so much wealth that I don’t need to show it off but I will certainly dress like I have mannerisms!! Vintage is never out of style.

Exactly! And what I see in those outfits are the comfort as well. Good quality clothes that last long and are actually comfortable and won't be damaged after a few weeks of wearing. It seems like these people spend more money on clothes but they won't run to the shop to buy new collections that come out every two weeks. They invest and then re-wear for years.

The old money aesthetic has been my style for many years, and to achieve this look I stopped buying cheap fast fashion clothing, and instead I started doing a lot of thrifting for quality classic pieces that are going to stand the test of time and not shrink, stretch or fade after only a few washings. Shopping in thrift stores has allowed me to have a beautifully curated wardrobe that is timeless and always in style. I shop for the classic cuts in only natural materials such as silk, cotton, linen & wool (NO POLYESTER or ACRYLIC!!!)....it's so much better for the environment, and the thing I love most is that natural materials feel so much better on the body.

Mariana Zelenjuk thrifting is an excellent way to add very high quality pieces that's going to stand the test of time to your wardrobe without breaking the bank....I highly, highly recommend it......you can look like you've spent a king's ransom for your clothes when in reality you've spent a very small fraction on them! Here's a piece of advice.....always read labels to see what the materials are.....and try to avoid polyesters and other synthetics )they look cheap. Instead look for pieces made of natural fibers like cotton, Pima cotton, silk, cashmere, wool & linen. True "old money" people don't wear cheap synthetics. 😁🍀

I agree about the materials. Unfortunately I haven’t got the means to buy expensive brands, but I also don’t buy complete crap (fast fashion). I buy somewhere in between and I always make sure I don’t buy polyester or acrylic. It look incredibly cheap and once you get the feel of these two materials which are basically plastic, you notice a piece of clothing that is made of it just by looking at it quickly. Cotton, wool, and even viscose are 1000% better.

    A. B. That's exactly why I buy most of my clothing from thrift stores because I don't have the means to be able to afford to shop in upscale luxury stores, but I love wearing high quality luxurious clothing and accessories and thrifting is the only way I can do that. Over the last few years, I have curated a wardrobe that would make Princess Diana jealous. 😉. However, with thrifting, you definitely have to know what to look for, and it does take time and patience....but it can be done.

@@MarianaZelenjuk I would completely remake your video it's got lots of cheap clothes in it and they just don't work. The theme is just not doing anyone any favours. Try thrifting but understand that a lot of it is about what works for YOU. For instance I'm tall so I don't wear bolero or very cropped tops. They make me look like I go on forever.

Been dressing like the old money due to parents' influence sooooo here's my list of basics :> -Furs, has to be either white or black or brown. Can be of khaki but has to be quite shiny and has variety of colors when laid before light. -PEARLS. It just screams it, y'know. Also, what's good about pearls, even if synthetic/replica, they don't tarnish even after long. -Silk. My mom told me that silk looks a lot better than gold and silver, still has that in mind even after years. Go get high quality silk, specially white, brown, and dark blue. -White bags. Will looks extra cute if it has chain handles. -Crocodile skin. Please as much as possible, use synthetic (but still looks nice ok) -BROOCHES, specially pearls😩 -Blazer, black or white or brown. -nude or red or white heels Everything I own is neutral (black, white n brown are the basic), they're also a lot easier to style :)) Hope this helps even a bit.

However when it comes to quality usually Massimo Dutti it's worth it and while being more expensive than Zara, Bershka & co. it's not as expensive as high end brands while giving you almost the same "rich" look. As far as their production ethics go I can't really afford to care a lot about it as I'm a low to medium income working gal with not much money to spend who also needs to dress well for work and places I usually frequent and in my country there are almost 0 thrifting options.

Well, my family is moderately wealthy, several generations wealthy, but I will not add more details about us. I’m enjoying all these videos surrounding the “aesthetic” of “rich people”, “old money people” Altough many points expressed in your video are correct, at the end of the day the approach is innocent, even naive. This obsession with looking “rich”, “classy”, is very much a middle class/new rich people fixation. Nobody knows that I’m rich, nobody knows that we are rich. Our goal, ironically, is to not look rich, we have other priorities. No, I don’t dress in rags, I dress very well, but I don’t try too hard. Not hard at all. And any person that is trying too hard to follow these rules and concepts are giving an energy of “desperate nouveau riche”. It’s paradoxical, I know. But we know perfectly well if you come from old money or not. I personally respect and value authentic and interesting people regardless of their social status. My only advice is be you, be kind, be educated, be elegant on your own way, but don’t try to convince us you are rich, we don’t care and you will not fool us.

@@janeonthecoast4920 I agree. I think when most people say old money we think classy. There are a couple of videos of how to look classy on a budget etc. I do think it is time to bring back some elegance to dressing up. There is nothing wrong with it. Growing up people thought my family was rich. We are middle class. My father grew up poor, but worked hard and got his own business. Although we did not live in a mansion, I did feel rich because I knew I have everything I needed and a loving family. ❤️ That has always made me feel very rich. As for friends thinking I was rich, I think it has to do with using manners and being kind to others. My family also dressed well when we went out together. We made sure we matched or something looked good.

I don't think the idea is about "fool" anyone or appearing to have money, speaking that way you classify the style as if it's something that only belongs to a group of people. People want to dress in a way that's classified as CLASSIC because they've seen it in movies and they like the characters, we have a lot of iconic movie characters that inspire us and people want to adapt to the present day. Old money people are shown in movies and magazines as people who dress in a classic way and this concept was connected to this group, but it doesn't mean that everyone dresses that way.

She is a southern belle who is African American but also comes from money and she dressed like it the entire run of the show. She wore clothes that were chic, her hair was done very simple with a bow or heirloom clip, pearls in her ears and neck etc etc etc. she had heirloom everything and mink coat for her 16th birthday, I mean I absolutely loved her character and I appreciate the writers for adding a young woman of color who come from money on the show, it was educational and very influential to me and I’m sure other young people of color to see someone that looks like them with wealth.

And Brit fashion, French, Italian in those decades even. I just saw Cruella and I love that it took place in London in the 70s, I find even the 70s was generally high quality and as earthy as it was, everybody still looked well put together, I love Threes Company cause you get to see 70s fashion amongst adults rather than just the young. You say you are not the authority on old money but I disagree! You are the authority. New subscriber and I've been enjoying your wonderful videos. I've been a classic dresser since I was 18. My favourite inspiration movie is Vertigo. I am 61 now and sometimes wear items that are 20 years old but still not out of style. I am a brooch lover as well and have a great deal of vintage jewelery. Thank you so much for your hard work and humor.

Old money is usually very casual, the exception is ALWAYS quality fabrics. When on display for photos or public engagements they usually dress up a bit. As the world goes' so go the rich, very casual. New money is very influenced by labels and showy pieces. I think the esthetic you so beautifully recreated is more sophisticated. Some of the most wealthy old-money people go out of their way to drive older cars, dress comfy and casual. Noone wants to be liked for thier financial abilities, so being understated can help in the endeavor of surrounding yourself with genuine relationships.

There are loads of articles out there on how “fast fashion “ retailers aren’t the problem in and of themselves (to those who are criticizing). Retailers used to release just two collections or so a year, and as our consumerism appetites grew, the retailers capitalized on it by releasing more and more collections. There’s nothing wrong with buying an item from Target or Zara…if you look for quality items that you intend to keep for years to come. I have dark wash skinny jeans from Walmart from over 10 years ago. I have sweaters from Kohls from almost 20 years ago. My favorite riding style boots are from Target from about 7 years ago (and absolutely no one knows that they aren’t leather from a fancy designer). Any piece you buy, whether it’s a $3600 LV bag, or a $30 Zara one, should be bought thoughtfully with the intention of long term use. That’s why it’s helpful to buy neutral, classic designs with quality construction that will both hold up over time and transcend trends.

I have clothes from H&M more than 15 years old, depending upon the style, H&M clothes can be reworn over and over again, they do not lose their shape, color does not fade (My dresses are mostly shift dresses). The pants from 15 years ago, however, I can no longer wear because they are low hips and are obviously no longer fashionable

@@MarianaZelenjuk You're welcome! Yes, I live in Austria and really love to be there. I am very sure that you will like Vienna ;-). It really depends in which season you want to come for a visit. There are so many beautiful things to do. In summer there are many restaurants and bars with a nice little place outdoor in the middst of the centre. Towntown (1.district) is always a great idea to visit. The districts beneath the inner center are not so expensive and very nice too. If you visit the arthistorical museum and the naturehistiórical museum (you really should ;-) ) than you can take a walk to the 7th district of Vienna and make a visit to the "museumsquartier" and "volkstheater" and than into the centre of the 7th district. Some places there are very romantic, similar to the inner district (small little alleys, little cafes, and in winter all alleys on "Spittelberg" are a huge wintermarket. In the evening you have there bars and restaurants, as well as cafes for brunch ;-). In summer you should definitely go to the "old Danube", a lake in the middle of the city, there you should visit "le creperie" a restaurant directly on the shore or the "Neuer Wirt"-Restaurant on the other side. Besides there is a great park called "Wasserpark" for taking a walk or doing a picknick. You also can do a little boat trip. Always nice to see is Viennas famous zoo called "schönbrunner animalgarden". But there are much more and sooo many things you can do in Vienna you will really love. So I hoped my information did help a bit. Wish you nice holydays and a happy new year! :-)

I found many of these pieces from my grandmas closet and up-scale thrift stores. However, I wear these pieces to juxtapose my body that is covered tattoos.
