_Nothing here unproven, nothing new to learn..._ _Nothing here unproven, nothing here is hid..._ *Alas, the warnings go unheeded, falling on deaf ears. The cycle repeats itself, everything will be abdicated, cast aside, sacrificed to the god of comfort & convenience & the name of expediency.*

One of my favorite Kipling poems. I have to wonder what Victoria thought of it, though.

When it was written, she was dying or already dead. It was actually written in a bad cause, the war against the Boers. Kipling's view was that the Afrikaaner leaders, and especially Paul Kruger, were little tin tyrants oppressing their fellow white men.

Considering it was written in support of the boers who were fighting the British empire. I doubt she approved. However, though this song is a very strong statement, Kipling wasn't necessarily against Kings he was more against tyrants and another poem of his called the Islanders condemns the cowardly British parliament which was unwilling to prepare before WWI im equally strong terms.

This poem and another called The Islanders describe everything wrong with the modern world very succinctly. Would that the world had heeded Kipling's words more closely.
