The OJ Simpson trial: 30 years later | Edge of Sports

On April 10, OJ Simpson passed away at the age of 76. Although initially catapulted to fame by his career in the NFL and Hollywood, OJ's early success was ultimately eclipsed by his alleged murder of his wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her lover, Ron Goldman. The double-homicide, subsequent trial, and acquittal rocked the nation-sparking a media frenzy and a culture war that revolved around questions of racism, police corruption, domestic violence, and celebrity impunity. TRNN Editor-in-Chief Maximillian Alvarez joins Dave Zirin on 'Edge of Sports TV' for a retrospective on the OJ trial and its consequences.

The OJ trail is what kicked off reality television, the entire thing was ridiculous from beginning to end.

Wrong, Reality TV started with either COPS or REAL WORLD.....long before Rodney King or OJ Simpson.

This 30-year retrospective on the cultural impact of OJ's trial, examining the biased media portrayal of the case, is curious. As an independent news network, shouldn't you also at least revisit the trial's facts? Beyond Max's multiply repeated proclamation of OJ “being guilty as shit” and Moira Donegan's column alleging OJ's abuse towards Nicole Brown, a closer examination of the case could have highlighted the multitude of doubts about OJ’s guilt, beyond the tropes. Multiple knives were used, the improbable time frame for the murders, OJ's voluntary blood sample, and then the suspicious presence of his blood at the crime scene (containing the same anti-coagulant additive added to his lab sample), all raise questions. Almost totally ignored in real time, the suspicious involvement of individuals linked to the Mezzaluna restaurant in organized crime and narcotics trade, on top of similar deaths of others associated to the restaurant, all add question. Then, your critique of LAPD impropriety misses the opportunity to discuss their history of anti-Blackness and framing innocent Black people. All that to say, after listening to this segment I was left very disappointed in the missed opportunity to highlight independent media’s importance, instead of rehashing tired cliches built by legacy media’s spin.

It was more about rich people getting away with murder then it was about race honestly.

The race bit I remember (and I don't remember a ton) is that the defense lawyers picked a black jury that would turn a blind eye to domestic violence, since it's so prevalent in their community. ...Generally, though, the people around me--family, community--all took the position that rich people can buy the justice system. And that's true.

OJ was railroaded simply because he was a black high profile athlete. Was he guilty of domestic violence in his marriage? Yes, but he didn’t kill his wife. The evidence in the trial made it impossible for him to be on two places at one time. F Lee Bailey proves the blood on the glove had was still wet not consistent with the time of the murder. Finally, black Americans were so happy he got off because it was the first time a black person was vindicated by the system for a high profile crimes. Prior to this case there were a plethora of murder cases across the country where black peopleswere the victims of racial crimes and the defendants were set free. Notably in LA: Latasha Harlans 15 year old girl accused of theft by a Korean shop owner was shot in the back of the head with her money in her hand March 19, 1991. Rodney King beating by cops who where acquitted 1992

All of America loved OJ till they found out how terrible he really was. Who else killed them two? You are delusional and caught in a lame obsession about race

Critical thinking is a skill, and you might want to work on it. DNA evidence doesn’t lie, and the amount of DNA evidence was overwhelming. Simpson's blood was found at the murder scene. Blood hair and fibers from Nicole Brown and Ron Goldman were found in Simpson's car, and at his home, a single bloody glove was found at the scene, while a second matching glove was found at OJ Simpson's estate, and bloody shoe prints found to the scene match those shoes, in a men's Science 12 Bruno Molly brand. In the civil case, the lawyer showed the jury 30 photographs of Simpson wearing those shoes. Only 299 pairs of these shoes were ever sold in the United States. Again, this was just the crime scene, OJ’s car, and home evidence, which would be way more than enough evidence to convict someone today. That coupled with an admitted history of spousal abuse. Nicole Brown ran to the police screaming, “he’s going to kill me, he’s going to kill me.” And the fact that if a woman is found dead with a history of being spousal abused, there is an extremely high likelihood that it was the abuser. Not to mention, after saying he was going to turn himself in, he tried to flee in the white Bronco with his passport, $9000, and a gun. At the same time, everyone, including his lawyers and best friend, was concerned that he was going to commit suicide. Oh, and that Fox interview he did where he literally described how he would murder the two.
