I'd be able to see Charlie's point to a limited degree if it weren't for the fact that Harry Potter is almost entirely fixed to Harry's perspective. In order to have a dedicated death scene for every character, Harry would have to be present every time someone dies. They're at war, there's a lot at play, and we're only following what Harry sees of it, so there's naturally a lot happening off screen.

Surprisingly I'm actually with Andrew and Jackson on this one, especially when it comes to Fred's death. It happening off screen is intentional, and Harry finding out like that is very realistic, that's one of the scariest things about war. You can only do so much, you can't always be there to have one of your guy's back, or to even see what happened. You finally get a chance to recover and rest, but then you find out someone you cared about died, and you didn't even know. That will haunt you just as much as witnessing it. The lack of emotional build up and sudden shock of learning about their death, often as you see their corpse, is the way it often goes. It's cold, sudden, and you don't get time to even really process it.

  • @ImLikeGoku

The one thing I can completely agree with Jackson and Andrew is the emotional impact of finding out that Fred died. To me it his hard because it was so random and we didn't know what was going on until it showed the body. Him getting blasted by a spell on screen wouldn't have made anyone cry, but seeing his whole family cry hit different imo. It also made Harry feel completely powerless because people are dying in places even where he isn't, so it made him want to give himself up.

Ye, also imagine Charlie's version the movie, it'd literally be like 90% just establishing that a character died in a certain way. At a certain point it just becomes gratuitous, especially a series with so many characters. Not every character can have a specific death scene, then a scene of their family grieving. Its a balancing act between trying to have each death be impactful, but showing literally every death end on end takes all the impact away also.

Fred's death in the book was protecting Harry. He and George were fighting death eaters in the hallway, and harry/ron/Hermione need to get to another place, and the twins help protect them. George makes a joke, Fred is laughing, and a wall next to him got blown up, killing him, but they mention how he still has the laugh on his face.

@@ScooterCat64 Well, the offscreen death's in part7 didn't do it for me. There's a good way to do offscreen deaths and there's a bad way. An example of a well-done offscreen death is Barty Crouch Sr. in part4. It needed to be not shown for shock value, since they needed to set up the big reveal scene. Also, we never saw Barty's combat prowess, so no fan would be mad not seeing the explicit way he fell. On the other hand, how they did the Mad-Eye Moody death is literally spitting in the mouth of all fans of HP. We saw a powerhouse of a professor, who was presented as Harry's guardian, basically Dumbledores Left Hand man, just be written off midflight... gone... **poof**... and no one even comments on it further or reacts in any way. He's just gone and never mentioned again. His death had no meaning, or at least it felt that way to me. At least Hedwig died contributing something to the fight. The Remus and Fred deaths were similarly awfull. I see a lot of people mentioning how it made the final fight feel impactfull. Umm, how exactly? We follow Harry's "treadmill" like POV, then we hear some folks are dead out of nowhere? But... Voldemort has killed waaaay more important people to Harry before... and the big baddie is still there, alive and well, as well as all his henchmen.... So the new deaths of all these beloved characters did nothing to increase the tension or Harry's determination. He still follows the same treadmill-like events regardless, giving himself up. If you're gonna have them die pointless deaths, then at least do us the service of seeing how they fell. Perhaps in flashbacks or dreams, the way they did it in previous movies. And don't give me that bullsh** argument of "the story sticks strictly to Harry's POV" for immersions sake. Where the f was Harry during Bellatrix's death? Was he also there next to Neville giving him a pep-talk? Did he observe all the fights with a spyglass, is he perhaps omnipotent or maybe he just felt the morbid need to check what everyone was doing on his map somehow? Give me a break...

@@pointyheadYT Spider-Man's original origin had Uncle Ben die off-panel in a home invasion. Peter got there after the fact and a police officer told him that his uncle was dead. The movies have removed this element. They removed/changed a lot of elements to the original story in fact, particularly why Peter lets the thug go. The original story still works great, because it still feels real. If anything it can feel more real. Also, the sad part is that Peter never gets proper closure with his uncle. In both of the films dealing with his origin he has a falling out with Uncle Ben just before he's killed. In the OG comic there isn't any such thing. Peter thinks the absolute world of his aunt and uncle. Personally I'd much rather they keep to the original, or at least for the next inevitable retelling try to keep some of those elements intact.

Guy who read the books here. Harry needed those deaths to happen "off screen" to shock him into sacrificing himself. He gets to the great hall and sees all his dead friends and he realizes he could have stopped it by surrendering. Story time: The reason they cut out Fred's death in DH2 is because of Percy. There is an entire arc in books 4-7 about Percy's decline and redemption from Ministry worshipper to fighting along side his family. Percy was known to be the most serious in the family and never made jokes, so after he made up with his family, Percy joked to one of the death eaters after knocking him out and Fred laughs and says "You actually are joking, Perce ... I don't think I've heard you joke since you were -" This is when Fred gets blown up, being killed instantly. The book goes out of its way to say that Fred's laugh is engraved on his mouth even after he died. If they had changed Fred's death then the people who read the books would be upset that his death was altered, so they just show his corpse and Harry's reaction.

He did understand it, but Charlie’s binary view of this made the discussion confusing. Dying off screen isn’t inherently bad. The writing can be good or bad either way and the choice of showing a death or not is just that, a choice. You can write both of those choices well, and whether the right choice was made for a given situation, is debatable. Charlie, however was speaking as if it is never debatable, so anytime Andrew tried to talk about how some of the deaths were arguably addressed fine to good in his opinion, Charlie just kept repeating “died off screen” as if it was a hard counter, end of discussion rebuttal. That is illogical. So, Andrew thought Charlie was basically just saying the writing was super flippant with the deaths, where they maybe weren’t even mentioned or just hardly at all, when really, he was just literally repeating died off screen = bad writing. Again, that is illogical so that is why there was so much confusion. Rare L from Jesus himself

I don’t think I’ve heard you joke since you were-“ The air exploded. .... “No-no-no!” someone was shouting. “No! Fred! No!” And Percy was shaking his brother, and Ron was kneeling beside them, and Fred’s eyes stared without seeing, the ghost of his last laugh still etched upon his face." "Why weren't UK houses built with AC?" must rank for sheer intelligence alongside a British person being stunned to find that their rental in Florida or Cali doesn't have a roaring fireplace. Historically, only the most extreme outlying weather would have made it necessary. It's very easy to find AC units if they're important to you, and the more that heatwaves become normal the more common they'll become. Many homes are also having heat pumps installed for more efficient heating, and which can be reversed to cool the home. I like having four distinct seasons with little to no extreme weather. Other opinions are available. Seeing people genuinely suffer in 15C weather is just as funny to us as our dislike of heat is to these guys.

I just reread the books a few months ago and I never realized how they pretty much killed most of the big people in very unremarkable ways. Like madeye died about the same way movie and book, Fred was alive in the book and then died in a random explosion suddenly. Tonks and Remus got half a page to say they got struck down in duels. The big one the movie messed up on to me was Peter, who died brutally in the books. I just think JK wasn’t the best at writing death scenes, or she was maybe going for shock. Either way still loved the books though.

Andrews point that this only affects a big harry potter fan is really spot on, ive seen all the movies, read all the books because of ex girlfriends, and i really just couldnt care less about the lack of death scenes, the emotion was there, the point was proven, for charlie to call it 'lazy' just seems like an emotional overreach on his part. Some of the ones in Harry Potter that died offscreen really sucked, but Fred "dying" offscreen is impactful(it could've been fleshed out more, but his family being there helps it). If we saw everyone's battles in the final movie, it would've had to be 3 Parts instead of 2(I'm sure most fans would've preferred it to be 3).

We have a couple weeks of hot weather a year and the rest of the seasons are cold so why would every home pay thousands for AC, but with that being said a lot of new homes and work buildings do have it. Andrew asking all UK listeners ‘why do you live there’ and saying we only got the internet last year just leaves a sour taste in my mouth. People from the UK often have insufferable superiority complexes, which colours a very bad picture for non-UK folks, especially Americans. It could be anything as innocuous as removing the u from colour/spelling aluminum instead of aluminium or as serious as bad Healthcare and school shootings. Your country dishes it out plenty, so it's bound to get it back. I personally don't partake, but it's easy to see why people do on all sides.

Those scenes worked great, we got to see Harry’s she’ll shocked reaction to all these deaths that he didn’t even see, we got the same shock as he did. Jesus get a representative from the UK on there haha, the Internet over here is good for the vast majority of people (public wifi is pretty bad though). Most people dont eat spotted dick and jellied eels, we eat a lot of other countries cuisine most of the time. And most of the UK outside of London is great, jacksons really painting a bad and unrealistic picture of the UK 🤣

My house is 300 years old. It was floated down from the bay during the resettlement period. It had concrete in the walls and It had Knob and tube wiring. It is possible; but it is a fuck ton of work to get it insulated and liveable and that is before the stone fireplace. You will find a ton of weird things and even after 3 years there are weird drafts and things that need to be done..

Love the podcast but it honestly gets annoying with Andrews ego sometimes and what feels like a regular attack on Jackson from Charlie and/or Andrew. Man that AC Odyssey argument genuinely made me mad which is kinda sad ngl but fuuuuck Charlie and Andrew love to run and circles and not let Jackson enjoy life the way he wants to.

I really don't get Charlie's point. I understand not liking off-screen deaths when there's no emotional weight attached to it, but as Andrew and Jackson said, you see Fred's family mourning his death. At that point I don't really care whether I saw him die or not.

Wormtail wasn't even killed off screen. He died on "screen" in the book but the movie just cut the scene for no reason and never established that he was dead.

Living in the UK, and having worked in both mobile and broadband tech, I can say with confidence that a large majority of buildings in the UK are not equipped to have wifi or mobile signal work very well. With them being old, the materials used to build them were from a time before any kind of signals related to either existed, which resulted in materials being used that signal tends to have difficulty travelling through, which is why more modern properties have better wifi coverage. Gigabit internet is also not quite as widespread as other countries

that's interesting, I just assumed that's just how things are because here in Poland, at least where I live, if you go a bit further into rural areas the internet connection also likes to fail even if it's a locality close to a city it just gets intercepted by trees and houses n shit

  • @geediddi6007

@Arsena Tbf that isn't wrong either. Rural areas and cities can both be a double edged sword for opposite reasons. Trees, buildings, even hilly terrain can affect signal
