I grew up in Utah, our scout troop went caving through nutty putty back before it was sealed up. Most of it is pretty cool, but a few parts are terrifying, like one long small tube they call the birthing canal, aptly named. The man who died in the caves unfortunately decided to explore the dangerous parts of the caves that they warn you about. He wasn't a bad guy in any sense, he just made a bad decision that really anybody could make. The dangerous parts of the cave weren't blocked or anything. It's a good thing they sealed it off, I think more people would have died eventually.

@@chaimschnittman531 oh he didn't die in that part, the canal is a popular part of the cave, he was on the opposite side of the caves I believe, which most casual groups don't explore as much. The birth canal is intense, but it's doable and was the attractive part of the cave for most people.

Ted the Caver is a classic, might have been that story they were talking about. On Jurassic Park, the reason the raptors (and all other dinosaurs) look the way they do is explained in the book, they were bioengineered to meet the expectations of the visitors/audience/VIP's etc. to the island, and then, while they were making the movie they (paleontologists) coincidentally found a new type of raptor which was similar in size to the ones in the movie.
Charlie usually looks like he's been dragged outta bed and completely uninterested in the podcast. Today he looks rested and moderately interested.
Andrew's whole "dangerous hobby" shtick can pretty much be boiled to: "I want to do whatever i want with no repercussions." Which is the most perfect encapsulation of the human mindset I think I've ever seen.

I spelunk to see the whole other world beneath our own. It is not just boring rocks, maybe the caves where I am from are different, but the walls are covered in beautiful white bubbling crystals, massive rivers of crystallized calcium frozen in time, and many other alien like landscapes. I am not very small at 6’3” so the whole “spelunking” part of spelunking is not that easy for me, but nothing beats climbing out of a little passage into a room 10s, and in certain caves, 100s of feet long. That is why I like caving at least, kind of like rock climbing for the views. Though I guess there are people out there who do it specifically for the thrill of climbing through the tight spaces.
@peelsreklaw
2 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's also incredible to realize how massive the rock above and all around you is. I did a path in a cave in the midwest that followed an underground river to a series of small waterfalls and pools, it was so beautiful. And turning the lights off is a trip.

Meet The Natives is an amazing documentary series... They arrive in new york and the tribes translator thinks that Taxis are just any yellow car that you can get in, tell them your name and they take you home... They also experience snow for the first time which is an amazingly wholesome moment, and while passing an industry area they say that maybe thats what has caused their crops at home to stop growing like they used to. At the very end of the documentary they return home and everything they filmed is shown to the rest of the tribe. Such a great show!

I remember hearing that caving story, one of the rescuers injured themselves trying to save him. Also Avatar originally had an incredibly unique soundtrack then the director dumbed it down.
"Real" consequence free sword fighting exists already. It's halled "HEMA" for "Historical European Martial Arts". It's basically fencing but with normal longswords. Some practitioners even use polearms and battle axes. I'm not too familiar, but I remember they also focus on real effective tactics. So you are essentially just sword fighting with protective gear, with dull swords and covered pointy bits.
@lololollololol629
2 жыл бұрын
I don't think that HEMA is entirely consequence free but I'm not sure if people have ever died from it but you can be injured(not that I've ever done it just googled out of curiosity lol)
@DoodleDan
2 жыл бұрын
I think HEMA also uses Bo's (quarterstaffs), if you went all out like he was saying he wanted to do and a Bo hit you literally anywhere, well, it'll crush every single bone, so it's not consequence free :P

The right hand rule for caves, even cave diving. (Though cave diving the true rule is ALWAYS be near the rope line or you dead, but right-hand is good for exploration of the cave-maze) Left-Hand Rule for going out of the cave. (I used this many a time in minecraft several years ago) Cave diving, your brain will override your mind if anything goes wrong, even when experienced, so it is VERY easy to die if something goes wrong, like accidentally inhaling water. --Fight or Flight will kill you--

I think Charlie was actually in the right direction with Ready Player One being the next thing for VR, but I think it would be better if it was the technology from Sword Art Online. Like how Andrew said about being thrown by an attack from a dragon, that could happen if SAO technology was real.
36:10 For the guns there's laser tag and I think it could be possible to make a laser sword fighting thing, like laser tag but with swords instead. It would cost quite a bit of money to make though....

Cave Diving is even more terrifying. It's statistically one of the deadliest hobbies, since it combines the tight claustrophobic mazes of caving with having to manage your air and move around underwater in the dark. Look up some cave diving horror stories on youtube, there's some fucked up things that happen to people who do it.

Man hearing “they pack you in, in economy, it’s awful”. Man I wish I had that much money 😂
I think what Andrew needs is either a high dose of shrooms or Lsd to experience what he was trying to explain in this episode. Both can make you think you're in grave danger when nothing is happening. Like, for example, watch jurassic Park or a movie like that, but on acid and you will feel like you are in it. Couple things about Nutty Putty -The guy who died was looking for the birth canal route, but accidentally found a different route thinking it was the birth canal. So he continued onward, thinking if he could just go far enough, he'd make it through. -That dead end was discovered earlier. The people who found it knew it was dangerous, and thought it was better to leave it alone, rather than have a sign saying don't enter. Their rationale was it was a pretty obscure spot and they thought no one else would notice it and a don't enter sign would entice the risk takers. -chiseling away at the rock was on the table. But because he was upside down, they didn't have the days it would take to do it. (the route to him was like 20 feet of tunnel barely big enough to breath in, let alone chisel) -Explosives were out of the question because of how intense and violent combustion would be in such a tiny space
@Thisisthegreatestatofalltime

19:47 They did try that using dynamite from what I've heard!! but it was ineffective apparently
i read a book exactly like what andrew is describing about his video game fantasy. i forget the name of the book but it was along the lines of a system like a tanning bed, where you lay in and stick little needles into yourself at various points. probably connected to nerves. and then one to your head. and it ultimately puts you within the game itself, and you have the option to enable pain or not to get fully immersed. there were loads of things you could do from play and mmorpg to a first person shooter to just a game that’s living another life. it was pretty cool and is literally exactly like andrew’s thing
Mr ballen has convinced me to never go caving lol
Great 👍🏻 video nice 👍🏻 hype!!!!!!!!!!!
Avatar is my favourite movie mostly because the designs were so cool. As an artist in training, that movie made my entire world. The mech things Andrew said were interesting as well, but to me, it was generic mech designs and cant even COMPARE to the unique alien-like features and beautiful colours of the forest creatures. Im kinda disappointed yall hate it so much, but hey everyone has their preferences. I have very high hopes for avatar 2.
The whole "realistic VR" thing is just SAO.
that entire game tangent is just them wanting sword art online irl
