The Official Old Ghost Road Video | The Mountain Bike Ride-through | NZ Mountain Safety Council

Спорт

The 85km-long Old Ghost Road is Aotearoa’s longest single-track backcountry trail. The multi-day adventure takes riders and trampers back in time along the long-forgotten shared-use goldminers’ road.
This impressive track weaves through diverse rugged environments from long alpine sections to exposed hills. Combined with the infamous West Coast weather ranging from heavy rain, strong winds, snow, and freezing temperatures, even in the height of summer, means trail users are often challenged.
The new video highlights these varied conditions mountain bikers can expect, covering important tips including how to pack a balanced bike, a suggested packing list, the common risks, and hazards, and outlines key decision-making points and pit stops.
Want to do this track? Use the Plan My Walk app to build your own plan: planmywalk.nz/tracks/the-old-...
Key learnings in this video:
- Choose a time of year where the conditions match your experience level, and always check the forecast before setting out. Aim to ride during a fine weather window, but pack for all conditions.
- Have a well-balanced and maintained bike and carry a repair kit.
- Carry a mobile phone and a distress beacon to ensure you can contact search and rescue if something goes wrong.
- Carry an emergency shelter and some extra food to get through an unplanned delay, you can find out more here.
- Understand your own and your group’s limits. Stay in control, and when encountering trampers signal your approach and give way when appropriate. Stick together as a group throughout your journey.
- Understand the facilities. There are four Mokihinui-Lyell Backcountry Trust huts, and two DOC huts on the track, and the amenities they provide are quite different. You can find out more on oldghostroad.org.nz

A beautiful but challenging trail, even for experienced MTB'rs. Two mates and I rode this in good weather on November 7th 2022. It is possible to ride in one day but choose your weather wiseley and be prepared to stay a night if it changes. It took us a leisurely 8 hours riding, 12 hours overall, after a start at 0540. Have fun but take all the safety gear recommended to make sure you make it out.

The Old Ghost Road is quite a bit gnarlier than the Heaphy Track and is in fact the most difficult cycle trail in the official New Zealand Cycle Trail (NZCT) system. It’s recommended that every rider cycle it from Lyell north and not the other way, as there is a section that’s nearly impossible from north to south, and the trail also contains New Zealand’s longest section of ‘single track’, a very narrow section on an exposed hillside.

Everything functions properly kzread.infoUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Nothing was damaged in the box aside from a decal on the fork. The decal was missing a piece of a corner but I ended up peeling them off anyways. Assembly is easy BUT make sure you tune up the derailleurs. Both the front and rear need adjusting. I'd advise going to a bike shop but I opted out and put in 10+ hours with the help of KZread. Ended up fraying a shifter cable but all in all I learned from the experience. The Brakes work well but the front caliper needs adjusting or at least mine did because the rotor was rubbing against the pads. Make sure you swap out the seat, grips, and pedals. For the short run you'll be fine though. I've read that this bike isn't built yet for hard trails but I just need it for the city. PA has some of the worst roads and being in a mountain this was a great choice. Worth the investment!
