Nothing better than the smell of a new leather baseball glove, the coolness of late summer evenings and nights as fall approaches, the crack of the bat as it meets the ball, the little sting from the ball when you make a catch at times, etc. Man, I love baseball.. almost as much as I loved it as a kid. Wish they had more leagues for adults lol. No softball.. real baseball. Its a game you shouldn't have to be a kid or a pro to experience firsthand. What a fantastic game.. this video is almost as good!

I love baseball. Always have. I turned 38 this year. I played LL and throughout HS. Both of my sons play. In 1997 i got Derek Jeter's autograph at yankee stadium. With history repeating itself, as it usually does, my son got Aaron Judge's autograph this year at yankee stadium. We also got Anthony Volpe's autograph last year while he was playing for the Somerset Patriots. We're enjoying seeing his first season in pinstripes. Just the same, i enjoy seeing the history of this wonderful game. Thank you to all who came before and made this sport the special game we still love today.

It's always been hard for me to sit through an entire game on tv, but when it's on the radio and I'm grilling or otherwise tinkering, it is special. As a Padres fan, I always liked Dave Campbell and Jerry Coleman (70's-80's). Never could stand Leitner and he took over sports everything in San Diego for 20 years - blah, blah, blah.

I love these old timers from back then - up into the 1950's. I especially love some of their names. The game seemed more fun back then. They seemed to have played much harder with more drive and passion and really earned their pay AND the fans seemed to really be into it. Today seems all commercialized and soft and very safe.

Fans adored the fat man, Babe Ruth, so much they gave Roger Maris hell for breaking his record. What these uninformed boobs failed to realize was Ruth played in a far weaker era. By consensus baseball's greatest era was the period from the mid forties to early sixties. Integration had raised the talent level to unprecedented heights. Pitching in the era of Cobb and Ruth was closer to beer league level than big league. Pitchers threw harder with a greater repertoire than ever before during that latter era. Not only was relief pitching now in vogue, an entire new arsenal of pitches emerged. Great stars like Willie May's played under the worst hitting conditions imaginable. Facing wonderful pitching, in the wind tunnel known as Candlestick Park. Yet, he hit over fifty Homer's twice! When evaluating eras all factors need to be considered. Not just numbers.

The guy who batted behind Hack Wilson (190 RBI) had 130! That was the era of bad pitching where the entire league batted over .300. Sportsphone in NYC used to have a trivia contest where the winner got to make a brief speech. They asked who was the only team to go an entire season without being shut out. I guessed: "Yankees?" They said "correct." I then said...."hmmm 1932?" They asked if it was a guess, I said yes, and they said "A very good guess!'

The 1960 Pirates may be your favorite team, but historians and experts wouldn't rank them in the top 25 in terms of "greatness". That doesn't mean you shouldn't love your team, but that version of the Pirates appeared in only one World Series. The Yankees, Cardinals, Athletics, Dodgers, Reds, Giants, Braves, Astros, Blue Jays ALL had teams that sustained consecutive seasons of postseason excellence and won at least one title. The Pirates didn't.

Though I found my true calling in music the love for this game only deepens with time. This is the true American pastime. The only sport where failure is considered greatness. How can you not be romantic about baseball? 2024 my O’s will finally be in that World Series!

One notable discovery found in a shed in a village in Surrey, southern England, in 2008 was a handwritten 18th-century diary belonging to a local lawyer, William Bray. "Went to Stoke church this morn.," wrote Bray on Easter Monday in 1755. "After dinner, went to Miss Jeale's to play at base ball with her the 3 Miss Whiteheads, Miss Billinghurst, Miss Molly Flutter, Mr. Chandler, Mr. Ford and H. Parsons. Drank tea and stayed til 8."

Baseball's kinda funny in many ways, but one in particular is the number or repeat World Series, e.g., from 47 to 81 the Dodgers and NY met 10 times; from 46 to 2013 Boston only reached 7, but 4 were against the Cards; the Indians make 3 WS in 47 yrs, and 2 are against the Braves; and, in the past 57 yrs the Pirates make exactly 2 WS, and both were against the O's.

It almost makes sense that this would happen. When the teams that are winning and winning and getting to the world series the teams that are bad have to work back up to get there. So while those world series teams get worse those worse teams adversely get better. They match up over time the same way and coincidentally it happens at the same time. And over 140 years that cycle just keeps playing itself out.

Joe Jackson didn't play any different in the world series than he had all season. However he did take five thousand dollars from gamblers to throw the series. The prevailing belief is he took the money and cheated the gamblers. It was the first baseman and the sox ace pitcher that actually threw the series.

Sure he has the right to run them over, but I think there's a line. Otherwise, what's to stop the runner from attempting to loose the ball from his mitt by kicking the ball's in his pants?

At 1:02:10 when Maris hits his dinger, look at the empty upper deck stands. At Yankee Stadium. Their own player reaching a truly remarkable milestone and instead of circling the wagons, New York turned their back on him and made his life miserable. In his own home field. Having known this since before 1998, I was glad when McGwire shattered the record, as all those generations of trolls who have sat in the stands in the Bronx and called themselves "fans" for decades do not deserve that record in pinstripes. Like spoiled brats getting lobster and throwing a tantrum that they wanted prime rib, or something. Needless to say, because of that I was also glad that the career record belonged to Hank Aaron as a Brave, and that A-roid didn't get there. Because of the way they treated Maris, no HR records in pinstripes is cosmic justice.

Don't get me wrong, smoking is not the best habit in the world, but the Smoke Nazis have even invaded the great American past time. Tell you though ... this is one great history. Way to go Astros Classics. *Hope your Astros win it someday. Love how they filmed Bad News Bears II in The Astrodome in 1977. You're right, of course. My wife and boy would be the first one to get angry over someone smoking on top of them; and justifiably so. And, calling someone "Nazis" is extremely overused. In retrospect, I regret saying that for obviously reasons as the real Nazis were monsters. That said, it's funny the things we miss; and for me, tobacco smoke of all kinds is one of them. At the old Yankee Stadium, my mom took my bother Karl and me to games circa 1976 to 1983. We were lucky enough to get some very good seats from a relative as we could not buy one that expensive. And, the business crowd in very expensive seats would often light up a joint! Unbelievable! Not to say that's OK, in any way, but talk about an "interesting" memory. There's something about our sense of smell that can bring back the oddest memories.

Baseball sure has changed since I played the game sixty years ago. It used to be the game that kids played on a vacant lot somewhere when you could get four guys together to play a game. How I used to love to hear the crack of a bat, and see the ball sail into the outfield. I never could throw very well, but I loved to hit that ball. I read a book on how to hit, and I could hit the ball into any field. It was a fun game of my youth, but once I got my heigth I just wasn't the same. I couldn't do anything sports wise the same. Yes, plain simple baseball sure has changed. They've had to supe up baseballs to beat the records that the Babe and others set. A real shame this. A real shame. Hank Aaron never beat the Babe's record, because he achieved his record with less times up to bat. Times up to bat is part of the record. We in this country have cut corners on too many things. Life was meant to be simple and equal for everyone. When will we realize this, or will we ever?'
