    14:38 there is a GREAT example of this in the failure of the Sampoong department store disaster in Korea. If you have never heard of it I suggest at least reading the wiki, but the short of it is, the did a bunch of stuff to the building it wasn't designed for, and the straw that broke the camel's back was moving the air conditioning units around on the roof, caused the whole building to collapse, full of shoppers.

  • @GGigabiteM

    @GGigabiteM

    2 жыл бұрын

    The A/C units on the Sampoong roof caused a punching shear failure of support columns. The building was already grossly overloaded because of illegal additional floors added to the building over the original plans, and the relocation/undersizing of existing support columns to allow for more open space inside the building. The building was already in imminent danger of collapse because of the overloaded columns, and there were several columns that had the floor separating away from them before the A/C units were moved. The building would have collapsed on its own eventually, but the vibration from the A/C units rapidly accelerated it.

    14:45 Each square foot of a roof is designed to hold the load that is expected to be placed on that square foot with a small margin for safety... For Example: If a section of roof is only designed for a seasonal snow load of 1,000 Lbs., carting a 2,000 Lb. A/C Unit across it will result in that A/C ending up in the dining room below...

    I don't think that they "don't anticipate it." They simply don't care about the environment it runs in, because they met some DOE standard for lower wattage. Also, many building design "pros" are not cable of designing good ductwork. They too only care about the cost.

    I have replaced 10 old units with Carriers and the eco motors, I have already had to warranty out 2 and purchase 3 because they failed after the warranty expired, they’re like $900 for the motor and always weeks out. I found that mine had bad spots in the motors, so it would get the fan call, and do nothing but as soon as you would bump the blade it was kick right on

    Comment towards the “eco-blue” blower assembly, likely unrelated to any issues you’ll run into with them but curious if you’ve encountered the same thing as myself. I had issues with a very similar packaged unit I installed that would intermittently trip the fan limit located beside the blower during the heating season (-40C -20C winters from where I’m located). Talked with tech support and was informed the blower motor itself in my particular unit was wound for a 50hz power supply where we have 60hz. Perhaps this may relate to why your unit wouldn’t produce the expected CFM based off the ESP/CFM chart.

But I doubt the motor was built for Australia or the UK and sent to the USA as both Counties have a 240V Mains and the USA is 120V Mains so a Motor designed for you will NOT work in the USA since it's only getting half the Voltage it needs...IF it could actually start under a load, it'll run at a SEVERE Overcurrent (half the Voltage = double the Amperage) and quickly either trip the breaker or thermal overload assuming it doesn't literally burn out first...

    I have to wonder, why not use the refrigeration in reverse (with a reversing valve) to do the heat instead of the burner? Turn the package unit into a heat pump which is going to be more efficient than burning the gas.

    @@johnhammon703 Depends. If a modern gas turbine generator plant is 40% efficient and a gas burner is 95% effective, than a heat pump must have a COP equal to ~2.5 to be as effective as a gas burner. But you have to also factor grid load, costs per kwh for gas and electricity, etc.

    @@johnhammon703 your using the act of refrigeration to do the heating. An most heat pumps can move more heat energy then eletrical energy consumed. Even at 0F theres still roughly 85% of usable heat in the air. The only down sides of heat pumps is that they dont put out as high of heat as a gass furness and in low temps they lose efficiency. But below 20 temps are rare in south cali

    Probably because parts an labor would be high. An from what I've herd brazing in a reversing valve is a monumental pain in the butt. Most units with a failed reversing valve tend to get condemned cause trying to braze in a new one is extremely difficult. This is at least what I've been told by several teachers

    @@ceilingfanmusic6597 Its not just a reversing valve that needs "braised" in go look at a residential heat pump, they have a lot of weird shit on them. Im in colorado and most commercial buildings are using hydronic VAV systems now and a small btu burner in the rtus. its pretty efficient from what I was told compared to a big multistage burner.

    Man I can really agree with your POV in the intro. Manufacturers don't really see what happens in the field. I really feel like engineers and designers need to go out in the field and work on their creations.

    Unless I'm looking at it wrong, that blue fan looks like a conventional bladed type. I wonder why they thought that was more efficient? The engineers aren't going to be the ones cleaning it, which is probably why it's hard to clean.

    1” of static is up there but it is what it is. if the costumer don’t wanna change ductwork, put it in the report you said to change it, and let it ride. Running only in Cooling with high static isn’t good on the blower motor, and compressor if superheat is Low. But high static on heat pumps in heat mode may be more detrimental to the lifespan of the compressor because of head pressure, what do you think? 6 one way half dozen the other? I’d say a majority of ductwork is sized wrong around pnw WA too. Great video

    Nice job ! From my experience. The blower assembly just need to get a new shaft, wheel and a bit of screw to old that motor bracket… And for the cracks that u see under it. When u retrofit that blower thing and dissambly it. U take 4 metal holed can-trust and u made a stronger floor for the blower and it will not shake again. Yes there is a short to ground somewhere but its maybe so easy to find . Especially on the 24v side. And for the honeyweel jade economizer control. Its the best thing they never did for the controlling econo style. In canada we all put this to cool in winter mode. But as usual u did a really nice job and im always happy when i see ur video!! Please continue like you do !!! Btw sorry for my english . In french ! Thanks

    It really depends on the scale of the project. Some (larger) mechanical contractors have separate divisions of sheet metal, pipe fitters, refrigeration, start up, and even TAB (test and balance). The projects I work on always go through TAB where they test, adjust, record and balance airflow(and water if applicable) to the mechanical schedule laid out by the MEOR (mechanical engineer of record). It can be a painful step of a project, but really shows that all air handling equipment, duct work, pumps, piping, etc. was installed correctly and is performing as expected.
