I own an arquebus for home defense, since that's what Oda Nobunaga intended. Four Azai traitors break into my house. "Nani no akuma?" As I grab my Kabuto helmet and Portuguese made Tanegashima. Blow a golf ball sized hole through the first man, he's dead on the spot. Draw my match-lock pistol on the second man, miss him entirely because it's smoothbore and nails the Ikko-Ikki. I have to resort to the Hwacha mounted at the top of the stairs loaded with arrows, "Anata to hanarete!" the arrows shred the two men, the stray arrows set of the horses. Grab my Yari and charge the last terrified Azai. He bleeds out waiting on the Tokugawa to arrive, since Yari wounds are impossible to stitch up. Just as Oda Nobunaga intended.

In Darth mod, Ashigaru take 0.5 turn to train, so with 2 training slots you can train 4 per turn, with 3 slots, you can train 6. So Oda can pull off Creed and manifest army out of nowhere.

*inhales in pseudo-intellectual condescension* This is a technically incorrect interpretation of the Ashigaru. While originating in the common peasant levies of earlier centuries, by the Sengoku Jidai ashigaru were essentially a non-noble part of the Bushi class. Effectively something between professional soldiers and mercenaries. There isn't complete consistency since all of the different domains did things differently to varying extents, especially in this era, but this is the broad stroke of it. To the best of my knowledge, most of the Ashigaru Nobunaga used were hired or recruited instead of conscripted and this would be expanded upon during the Tokugawa Shogunate. This may lend to why they did better, although that was probably much more to do with how they were organized. Tl;dr: They probably wouldn't have been disposable slaves or serfs, especially not the ones given guns and especially not in Oda employ.

I know this is like three years late BUT the Ashigaru weren't peasant levies. They were professional soldiers, taken from tradesfamilies or farmers. One of the most influential men in all of Japanese history was an Oda Yari Ashigaru. Think of them more like man-at-arms and less like peasants.

By the end of that period, the distinction between Samurai and Ashigaru became really thin. Many Veteran Ashigaru units were at the same level in skills and gear as the supposely superior Samurai. Ah. The Oda. Takes me back to my very first game of Shogun 2, when I took over the entire center of Japan before even getting gunpowder weaponry (mainly because I didn't know that was a thing). Best moment was when a single soldier got 12 kills while surrounded by an enemy unit. Will always remember that day.

I am here with another fun fact about Sengoku era Japan! This one is about a man named Yasuke. He was a loyal retainer of Oda Nobunaga and very well respected. He was also black and one of the few Nanban to be awarded the rank of samurai. Sadly we don't know much about his life before arriving in Japan. He was a slave to an Italian missionary who was working his way through Asia when their ship was caught in a storm and sank. Yasuke washed up on shore and pretty quickly caught the attention of the locals. Keep in mind, the vast majority of Japanese people didn't know much about Westerners, let alone black people and the guy was over 6ft tall in a time when most Asians were short. He was taken to meet Nobunaga who was very impressed by his stature and physical strength, as well as intrigued why they couldn't wash the 'ink' off of him. Yasuke entered his service as his sword bearer and accompanied Nobunaga on his capaigns. Sadly, during the ambush as Honnoji, Yasuke was eventually defeated and while accounts say Akechi Mitsuhide, the man who betrayed Nobunaga, opted to turn him over to the Christian missionaries in Kyoto, there's no record of what happened to him after that. I should point out that a good portion of this story changes with the telling and I'm just giving the version I heard. This is a case of someone we definitely know existed but sadly not much about. I'm probably going to get a lot of "Well actually..." for this, but I think it's an interesting story regardless.

its much more likely for the interior ministry to be the Tokugawa Clan a staunch ally of the Oda clan there are 2 reasons for this 1 in Japanese it is referred to as "The interior Minister" a title once held by Tokugawa and 2 the red armor and heraldry looks very similar to one of Tokugawa's vassals.

@@Pilps I'd argue they're the most powerful unit in any Total War game (taking cost and availability into account of course) as long as you're Oda. If you're not Oda they're still pretty damn good. Probably top 5 lol

@@Rucka_Inc. id say loan sword ashigaru are the strongest. They can beat a katana samurai in a 1v1 and are insanly cheap.

@@robertharris6092 Well I just tested it and they don't win 1v1 against katana samurai. The yari ashigaru completely dominate both yuri and katana samurai as long as they're in yuri wall mode.

There’s a certain art to war montages. And watching your “experience” videos just makes me yearn for entire historical wars being memed and presented in such formats. Wellington at Waterloo: “It’ over Napoleon [Anakin], I have the high ground!” Proceeds to show the old guard march up to a volley. Marshal Ney yeeting his cavalry into the squares. With a face palm gif for Napoleon. 5:23 / I can't imagine Oda Nobunaga(おだせいけん) has converted to Christianity in the Sengoku age. Historically, he hated Buddhism monks(勝兵) because they were Robbers and bandits armed with a musket and a Naginata spear.

I don't know why, but for me Shogun 2 has one of the saddest endings for the campaigns, as it takes you to the "modern" times. Thousands died leading the clan to victory, a memorial was built on the hill where they died. It is now a park, where people enjoy themselves not thinking about the pain, the effort and the lives lost so that they can live their lives

I'd argue the imperial victory in FOTS is worse simply because it's the historically accurate option and what Japan will do over the next 80 years or so. Shogun or republican victory? Honestly could follow history or do something totally new

Honestly considering how everything we know about Chinese history either comes from medieval accounts or the CCP, I really wouldn't be surprised if most "chinese inventions" weren't actually made by the chinese

@@devilord3271 yes, because other nations histories are much more reliable and don't go through historical tampering at all. The CCP is evil so obviously Chinese History never existed.

Early modern warfare consists of pikes and more pikes. If you don't have a pike in war your not a early civilised modern human being!

It blows my mind that Rome had neither the spears nor the cavalry and still conquered the Mediterranean. Truly a testament to their martial and administrative abilities. Spears make war easy mode

@@partydean17 Well, they used spearmean as their first and last lines for centuries. Hastatus means spearman, the triarii were also spearmen. The princepii might have used spears too. Then, once they realized that Italy's terrain wasn't ideal for phalanx warfare, the romans used swords AS SPEARS. The gladius was mainly for stabbing, they were trained to stab the enemy up close while behind the shield. The thing about the maniples and later cohorts was having tactical flexibility, so they could exploit terrain and gaps in the enemy lines, which hoplites couldn't do it and relied on cavalry support instead. The use of swords allowed for closer combat as well, including storming cities and forts. The combo of scutum and gladius could be, in a general way, related to the old hoplon and spear model. The romans often let the enemy charge into their line, getting showered with pillum and breaking formation in the proccess. Then it was a matter of "gladius goes poke poke on your gut". So they used spears for a while, then used swords while keeping the shield.

@@partydean17 One more thing, more than once Caesar made his soldiers use their javelins as spears, so we know it could be done. It means that the romans had training in sword and spear warfare for at least part of their extensive history of conquest. Not even going to mention the differences between the early and late roman eras, their swords nearly became sabers in the end as they kept getting longer.

This game will always have the best animations and the best feel of any total war game Just that feeling when a cannon gets off that amazing hit litterally barreling the cannonballs through the enemy line

The other clans were lucky. If the war had dragged out any longer, the Oda would have unveiled their secret weapon: the Longer Yari Ashigaru. You don't need guns when you can poke someone to death from the other side of the battlefield.
