They are not really a hidden gem, though, anyone with even a passing interest in the scene would have heard of them, and rightfully so :)

Theory: The clean guitar melody in the beginning of Eocene is the same as the one in the Bridge of Jurassic|Cretaceous, because it's supposed to resemble mammalian activity during the Mesozoic. The first mammals were small rodent-like animals who were nocturnal to avoid the dinosaurs, and I think the reoccurrence of that melody (which is very trippy and subtle, just like the existence of mammals during the Mesozoic) is a metaphor that mammals begin to rise and primates start to evolve. Like, this one melody made it through the chaos that was Palaeocene. It survived. The Ocean's Albums are always perfectly composed and thought-out in every detail.

Maybe you are right, or maybe you are overthinking it. It is not the first time The Ocean uses the same phrase or melody in various songs of an album. Anyway it's an interesting point of view from you. Cheers! to the best band ever!

I dont know for me interpretation is just interpretation Just like we interpret nature It being wrong doesn’t make the interpretation any less beautiful. (What i dislike thought is what is done in some classes where you take poetry smash it’s skull in to death with a big ass rock skin it, cut it up put it in a bowl shuffle it and pull an explanatory text out of it. It’s fucking necromancy and make me want to bring in roadkill and use it to talk about life in nature to make a point Sorry let my frustration talk a bit too loud at the end there

@@reedy_9619 What makes the fascination of dissecting poetry even funnier to me is that most poets you "learn" from in class tend to have a reason, thought process or a particular topic about their work which they often openly discuss at lectures and so on. Why any form of poetry/art requires minutus detail scraping is beyond me. As you mention though, interpretation is just that and people will form their own thoughts and personal feelings behind any work of art or topic. We've all had the feeling from a piece of art; be it music, painting, poems that the art was made for you and you alone. The feeling you get when you're listening to a piece of music from a relatively unheard of artist and you get the sense you may be the only person in your entire country that is listening to it is an example. Another being a song you will listen to regularly but for some reason will never share it with anyone. That feeling of personal ownership or deep emotional connection to a work of art no matter what it is, is likely the reason behind some questionable analysis of poetry you might hear in a classroom or a lecture hall. Some interpretations are just ugly. However, OPs was not, and was rather quite beautiful.

@@giantrobot5804 It's depth. Sound's like you prefer more shallow stuff. I along with others find shallow stuff less than satisfying ...most of the time. There are times it's nice to listen to shallow less dense music though for sure. Perhaps you can imagine it as an image with less depth of view allowing you only to see a few meters vs another in which you can see layer after layer all the way to the horizon and people arguing over what they see.

Absolutely incredible album, you guys are a continuous source of innovative and essential music. Never stop doing what you do

@@brzofil Dino Don't? Go there lol? You're close enough over there and you're up you got tons and tons of petrified creatures and what not ,dragon's, giant frogs and serpents hmmm. But those experts say it's a dinosaur that they created with CGI just like that outer space stuff cover up the reality of what the fossils are revealing for those with eyes to see all the good stuff they actually fine never sees the light of day and if it does it has a lie holding all its weight.

There are no words to describe this album. What a journey!!! Easily Album of the Year.

Saw them live in Oslo a few days ago. I didn't know any of their songs, but they were so awesome live that I looked them up immediately. They're talented, have a great stage presence, and their music speaks for itself. My favorite of this album is definitely Miocene/Pliocene, which was breathtaking live. Not gonna lie, I was there for Karnivool but the Ocean definitely stole the show!

Haha, its similar for me. I wanted to go for Karnivool the year prior, sadly i red that the tour got delayed yet again. Lateron I checked out the new date, saw that they will be accompanied by The Ocean and I was hyped immidatly, since i already knew them. Srsly underrated group, they have a very unique attempt to metal. Their vocalist is a god damn machine, his screams are haunting. And i agree, Mioscene//Plioscene is an absolute beast live. The athmosphere, undescribable.

This band makes such dynamic songs and it’s absolutely beautiful to hear so many different sounds in one song. They can go from hard hitting to chill flawlessly. Amazing 💜🤘💜

I think my wife is jealous that I've absolutely fallen in love with this band. Bloody brilliant music, lads.

Really love this album, def their best yet.

How good is this!!! I mean, HOW FUCKING GOOD IS THIS!!!!! I don't know where to start. Loic's vocals, the bass!, the rythmic synth stabs, the lyrics, grinding guitars and the sheer inventiveness. Blew me away. Been listening to these guys since Fluxion, I think this is the best thing they have done. Can't wait to see them live again.

@@FaceOfOden Bell Witch made a helluva album, not my favorite funeral doom release this year though, that would go to Convocation. Epic shit. This year has been full of top notch releases. Some others in my top 10 are Pyrrhon, Paysage D'hiver, The Spectral Lore and Mare Cognitum split, Atramentus (More Funeral doom), and Gaerea. I'd rec any of them dude. After one listen of this album though I'd put it top 5 for now. I see it only moving up though.

Amazing. This was my most anticipated album in a long time, and after a month of release I can safely say that this is up there as one my favourite albums of the last decade. I have been a fan of The Ocean since I saw them support Opeth with Cynic. Aeolian got me into them big time and the distance this Collective has traveled in terms of music writing and putting all they've learnt through the years together to create this masterpiece is just an amazing feeling. This albums been on repeat now almost daily since its release. Fantastic work, I cannot praise this enough. Hits all the right spots.

@@mola55e5 Had a blast that night.. Very fond memory of me and my buddy screaming for Cynic to play How Could I after they asked for request. Sean just points to us with his stick nods his head with a look like "you're goddamn right we're gonna play How Could I" and he just rips the intro off. Met Paul and Mikael that night too and few of the Ocean guys were hanging around but didn't speak with them. Glad I seen Cynic several times they're a true great metal band. RIP Sean

Never fail in creating essential albums, I've been in since Fogdiver, never been at all underwhelmed by any release by The Ocean/The Ocean Collective, quite the opposite and in the best possible way. Another masterpiece is the two words that sum up Phanerozoic II: Mesozoic, cheers!

My expectations for this album were high, but damn, The Ocean still managed to amaze me

Had a weird urge to substitute both albums together over the soundtrack from Fantasia's Rite of Spring and the original Land Before Time. Felt absolutely surreal.

Incredible, once again. I'm so happy to be contemporary. Thank you.

This has pretty much everything one looks for in prog/post. Very well done.

It is such a varied album, I definitely will be coming back to it in the years to come.

Just watched the live, AOTY. Amazing job, keep up! You guys inspire lots of people. This album is one to be remembered.

Now if only they could tour again. Was lucky to see them in support of BTBAM back in '11. Venues are dying left and right, it sucks. Just wanna go to shows again.

They have tentatively scheduled a tour in for early next year. Depending on what the state of the world is, of course. They have said that if it needs to be rescheduled for later next year they all tickets will be transferable 🤘🏻

I like the second part of the chorus better actually. Paul launches into the same rhythm but with full on ride action. The vocals Loïc delivers there are bone chilling too. I just today posted the entire Guitar Pro tab on UG for the song. It's amazing what layers you hear once you start listening for details.

This gets better the further I dive into it. Mind-blowing album....this band,. should be heard by many more who appreciate good art.

I am like wow I like this album even more than the last one so far and then the double bass at 13:58 got me so hyped.

First listen through, and I think it's safe to say this is my favourite The Ocean album EVER. And that's sayin' something, as the likes of 'Anthropocentic' and 'Peligial', and others, are masterpieces. Fuckin' hell, Robin, Loïc et. co., outstanding work!!
