The NS H-line in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley: feat. N&W 611 Ferry Move - June 2023

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

June 1st and 2nd, 2023.
Footage from two days along Norfolk Southern's H-line in the Shenandoah Valley of western Virginia; during the N&W 611 ferry move between Front Royal and Roanoke, VA.
After running excursions out of Strasburg, PA, the famous Norfolk & Western "J class" No. 611 deadheaded back to the Virginia Museum of Transportation. On June 1st and 2nd, the 611 ferry move made its way south through the scenic Shenandoah Valley on home rails of the former Norfolk & Western. They spent the night in Shenandoah, then continued south to Roanoke on June 2nd.
Several N&W control position light signals, structures, and other trackside artifacts still stand along the H-line through the Shenandoah Valley, which provided unique opportunities to photograph an N&W steam locomotive with N&W steam era signals and trestles. The N&W CPL signals are gradually being replaced, so the CPLs featured in this video are on borrowed time.
This video starts between Shenandoah and Front Royal on the morning of June 1st. A few NS mainline freights are seen before and after the 611 ferry move, including a Herzog ballast train with a Union Pacific leader. The next day (June 2nd) I followed the 611 ferry move south from Shenandoah towards Roanoke. After the 611 arrived in Roanoke, NS local V81 came north with two SD60Es and several N&W covered limestone hoppers heading to Buchanan.

I Worked rail gangs for years, i worked this line, now retired i figured i go back and take in some trains on this. but you do such a good job, iam not going to bother going back, i seen a lot of this line from the centerline of the track, i did it for 39 years.

Thanks love watching 611, First time I saw that engine in action was about 65 years ago, today as a Senior Citizen, never get tired of watching this engine restored to life. America was stronger when we had Steam Engines racing around America, yes it took longer to get freight from one point to another, but children would line up by the rails to watch these monster engines pulling their loads. Thanks again Crescent Limited Productions for filming.

Thanks. Although an NS motor was leading, it was definitely nice to see steam on the mainline again.

It has only been 47 years for me...mine started in the days of Wasena Park. Still enjoy it, but I liked it better before the Spirit of Roanoke signature ruined the side view. Glad they got the whistle issue worked out too. I wish they would have been brave enough to run it on the Shenandoah Division during the 80's & 90's excursions. It would be interesting to know what changed on the "track gauged for diesels" that allows those runs now. Best looking steam engine ever, no question.
