The Northman is a 2022 epic historical fiction film directed by Robert Eggers, who co-wrote the screenplay with Sjón. Based on the legend of Amleth, the film stars Alexander Skarsgård (who also produced), Nicole Kidman, Claes Bang, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ethan Hawke, Björk, and Willem Dafoe. The plot follows Amleth, a Viking prince who sets out on a quest to avenge the murder of his father.
Skarsgård had wanted to make a Viking film for several years, and Eggers decided to make the film his third project after the pair met to discuss possible collaborations. Much of the cast joined in October 2019, and filming took place from August to December 2020 in locations throughout Ireland on a production budget of $70-90 million.
The Northman had its world premiere in Stockholm at Rigoletto Cinema on March 28, 2022. It began theatrical release in some countries on April 13, 2022, and was released theatrically in the United States on April 22. The film has grossed over $29 million worldwide and received critical acclaim, with particular praise aimed at its direction, production values, and the performances of the cast.
Prince Amleth is on the verge of becoming a man when his father is brutally murdered by his uncle, who kidnaps the boy's mother. Two decades later, Amleth is now a Viking who raids Slavic villages. He soon meets a seeress who reminds him of his vow -- save his mother, kill his uncle, avenge his father.

Fantastic movie in every respect. The portrayal of Norse mysticism as metaphorical, metaphysical, existing on a different plane which reflects/is reflected by the physical world I felt was extremely powerful and more representative of my own meagre understanding. The subconscious and the spirit realm are the same thing, which makes it no less real, it's just not literal. Too much for a lot of people, but too bad.

The first time I was so visually taken aback (in a good way) there was no much I haven’t seen accurately depicted before. The mysticism, rituals, the costuming, etc. My husband said I had crazy Norwegian eyes after bc i was so hyped 😂lol. The second time I was able to listen to everything more carefully. Worth a few watches, if I say so myself. Thanks for making some videos on this! And on the “real” Northman. Love your videos!

Lion King is actually the African story of Sunjata Keita who was the founder of the Mali Empire in the early 13th century. His story is identical to that of Amelyth. But his final confrontation with his Uncle was in a huge battle near Timbuktu. According to legend he fired an arrow with the talon of a chicken to kill his uncle “ who was apparently a warlock” . Medieval battles in Africa were very musical as well because each army would have witches and priests singing encantation for their armies to win.

I just discovered that Fjolnir was also a name for Odin in disguise. It translates to "concealer" and "much-wise" according to Neil Price's book The Viking Way. I wonder if Fjolnir in this movie was meant to be Odin? I wonder if that would even make any sense, as Amleth followed Odin and shouldn't want to kill him, but we know Odin is always up to his tricks.

God Morgen I purchased The Northman on Amazon video and have watched it entirely 5 times. Why? As with any movie I tend to focus on specific things absorbing them absolutely. Typically I'll watch a movie like The Northman the first time and 'scan' it; I may focus on the scenery and the sounds. I may focus on the music and how it enhances certain segments. I may focus on the characters specifically and their clothing. I'll focus assuredly on the animals, birds and such. I may focus on what is being said and body language. ( I know, it's just a movie however GOOD ACTING makes it all the more authentic ) I also watch it with the subtitles on, you'd be surprised what is missed. There comes a point when I've observed and absorbed enough that I can sit down comfortably and watch the movie without interruption putting it all together. As a kid, 11 years old and onward I hiked in the woods almost everyday from spring to fall. I could never take it all in on one trek so .......... often I would sit down on large rocks and just observe. I would return again and again usually as a person from the ancient past pretending I was them. Or was I pretending? It's time for a hike, hav en god dag og pas på ~

I loved this little lesson as I haven’t read that yet. I looked up the scholar you recommend though and I can see I’ll have to buy some of her works, thank you for that. Sidebar: I suspect “England” in that original story, assuming the 500s is the setting, is probably Northumbria or even that northern part that was a separate kingdom before being merged fully into Northumbria as we typically know it. I can’t remember that minor kingdom’s name off hand. That would explain why they’d be dealing with the “Scots” who would’ve been Gaels at the time. The politics of that period were so rich and mixed with who was dealing with who, I hate the oversimplified versions most movies and TV present.

You can seek out Viking Age (VA) historical reenactors and check how strict they are. Some have few rules and the people look like LARPers. Many have stricter rules where their people are only allowed to wear things that have previously been found in the archaeological record, so you know what they're wearing is as close to what was worn 1000+ years ago. I prefer groups like these to learn from. You also learn what types of linen and wool were used in the Viking Age, and also which stitches and sewing patterns were used, so what you recreate comes out looking exactly like what would've been worn back then. If you need more help, just let me know. If you want to buy things already made by other people, I do a lot of my shopping on Etsy from the Jelling Dragon. There is also a channel on youtube I used to follow of a Welsh archaeologist who had plenty of vids on accurate and authentic VA clothing. I stopped following because of his liberal wokeism agenda BS, but if you can tolerate that, he's a good source for clothing. His channel is here: kzread.infovideos

Open Question for anyone to answer: You mention that those early Roman/Protestant Christian’s rewrite historical gods as mere humans & you mentioned Odin as possibly one of these rewrites ..but I remember a video of yours about Odin having been a real man. If Odin himself was based on an actual man, would that not make us retest both theories from scratch, to redetermine who was & was not man or actual gods? Even the Roman Saturn (Utzu of Kupatitzia) was accounted to be a human king that was deified during his reign, which gave us Saturnalia which the RCC later disguised as Christmas. But that’s not to suggest that a lot of gods were in fact actually gods. Even the biblical Thanatos (Greek) is the Hebrew ‘Angel of Death’ as Hebrew Angels are merely seen as gods to other cultures. So I agree that some gods were gods.

In other words, all evidence, both old and new, tells quite concretely that you are Danes (Danish) Vikings, it is Danish Vikings who have founded your country and it is quite obvious that in this way there can be doubts about whether you can allow to call the Vikings the Norwegians, and the Danes, as it is in fact Danish Vikings who have been looking for their own land that they could cultivate and live on, just as we the Danish Vikings also did in England, Estonia, Germany and France. Norsmen as the Vikings were also called in Europe was a term for people from the north, not a jot to do with the Norwegians, as they were the Danes and that was where Norway got its name with time, due to disagreements between Danish Vikings and a Danish Viking founded his own kingdom (Norway) the Swedes' DNA is not from the Danes but a mix of some different former societies the Baltic countries and Finland etc. Sorry but you as a Norwegian are descendants of one of the 4-5 little kings who ruled the land of the Danes during the Viking Age where the name Norway still does not exist it came later, when one of the Danish Vikings put in internal strife and established an area he ruled in , therefore Norway got its name, and it was after what is called the Viking Age.

what are you talking about?????? Saxo did not wright the book for the king ( valdemar sejr ) but for the bishop Absalon. Yes he was christian and wrote from a christian perspective, but he uses the same sources as Snoore did in the islandic sagas. the biggest different being that Saxo was educatet in latin and classic history ( roman historians ) so he wrote his book in the style of those roman historians, snorre didn't. so if you have this knowledge, you can get a much fact out of saxo grammaticus as you can from the eddas. all other sources, written during the viking age, are from christian monks in other countries ( the frankis chronicels, the anglosaxen chronicles and other. I think that the bad reputation saxos work have got is mostly because it was lost and not discovered again in the 1500. but other than that I agree that saxo and snorres work are written some 200 years later and are based on folktales as the skjalds told them and therefor to be taken with a grain of salt

kind of like how most of what paul the deacon wrote about the lombards was biased horse shit. speaking of... would you do a video on my family? (the lombards) you are honest and do good research, so i believe you would do a great job sharing the truth.

My Father got a burial at sea, though not a Viking one, but a US Naval one. He was in the Navy when he was younger, and I was in the Navy when he died. His ashes are out in the Atlantic somewhere. I might join him one day. I know I will be cremated. But I might have my ashes spread on my land if we still live here then. All of my dogs and wolfdog (Beowulf) are buried here. And I'm building my heath/sacred grove we call Northland. There are 3 dead/dying Norwegian spruce in Northland that I will carve into giant godpoles for Odinn, Tyr, and Thor. I also have a large standing rock that was inserted at the end of the drive way that I will move to Northland and use as a runestone. There is another stone here in front of the house that is the biggest on the property and is flat, so that will be moved and become my horgr/stone altar in Northland. I've been planting pine and spruce trees all around the outskirts of Northland to enlarge it and also for added privacy so I can be out there with firepit, shaman drums, and mead/ale and be able to relax in peace where neighbors cannot see me. We are out in the country so we don't have many neighbors, but I've always said I want to live somewhere where I could walk around nude if I wanted to and no one would know. LOL! So maybe I will be spread across Northland when I pass.

Ive become a troglodyte .....From warrior to cave dweller. Men of the West, no longer shall we be incited to hate ourselves and our own kind. No longer shall we be driven to the hills and to the caves. Men and Women of the west we are the 8% of the worlds population yet we are told it is we who over populate the earth... Men of the West: It is hard times that create strong men and yet good times that create soft weak men . I ask you what time do you think we are in now?

The woke are becoming awake. I once sought equality for all. Then I realized those I was helping now want to rule over me. They do not seek equality. They seek supremacy. I've maintained a warrior mentality all my life in my fight for equality. I spent 20 years in the military and travelled all over the world experiencing and learning from other cultures. Now I've embraced my own ethnic culture and religion (Germanic/Nordic Heathenry) and have come home. I have finally found my own tribe, my People. And while I will always see all men as equal, I will never see myself as less than others no matter how violent they become seeking their reparations. Havamal 38 and 127 are what I live by. I am always ready to die for my people and my culture. I will go down fighting and will see you in Hel!

Hei mann, It just looks super gay! With the muscular naked guys with spray on abs etc. 300 style. I don't mind gays by any means, but also, why so gay? Hvis du skjønner hva jeg mener? Kanskje bare sånn 2022 er... Oh well.

One of the worst movies i ever seen. The story is boring and barely even there, theres like 1 reveal which is so heavily hinted its no surprise at all. I was yawning and laughing at the fakeness of the vikings portrayed. Especially the berserkers who apparently were morons going into combat without armor or shields and scaling a defended palisade by hand which makes you wonder why did everyone in the world bother building fortifications or armoring themselves. Apparently going in but naked is better! A big fat Zero for historical acuracy and a 1/10 for the story. 3/10 the cinematography and scenery. Very poor shots obscuring the empty sets with darkness that makes no sense ( a roaring open firepit half by a meter long doesnt light a wall 2 meters away from it. A sheep farm with no sheep. Guards but no walls. Which didnt stop the protagonist from being an idiot instead of assasinating the bad guy one night when he went for a piss... which would be the logical action of any person with a brain in their skull. Whcih reminds me again of how unrealistic and inhuman the behavior of the characters was. I heard the original saga of Amleth which is nothing like this movie. It would be a pretty good story for a movie but it would require set pieces, more than 10 actors, battle scenes and a writer who isnt an idiot.
