The Noosa Bar Crossing. Saturday morning, July 27, 2019.

The bar turned a bit gnarly this morning. The swell was up from yesterday and the tide was running out hard while I was there between 6.15am and 7.45am. A 5.5m-6.0m centre console with three POB tried to cross around 5.45am (best I can gather) and came to grief. The occupants were washed out into the bay and picked up a while later by a couple of boats that crossed safely. No one hurt. They were transferred to the surf club IRB and brought to shore. Checked later by an ambulance crew and given the all clear. A smaller boat, which took a solid hit by a good wave, had its sounder ripped off and shipped water and returned to base strapped to the side of Coast Guard vessel John Waddams. A couple of the Noosa Outriggers craft were also swamped and two crew, who were left behind on the bar, also had to be rescued. Never a dull moment. Oh, and a tinny coming back in over the north side hit sand and almost got rolled trying to make their way back out. That video later. Were they experienced in the conditions? Man it can be dangerous sometimes.

What is it with blokes and 10foot tinnies that think they are 7meter plate offshore boats.

... and THAT is why I don't cross bars in my little boat. At 4.3m it's big enought to be fine in good weather if nothing goes wrong... but if ANYTHING goes wrong it'll go badly pear shaped really quickly. I know my limits... my boat's staying a bay boat.

Thought in Australia you had to wear life jackets when crossing a bar?

You do. You also have to have an EPIRB if going more than 2nm off the coast, but I bet that tinny didn't have one of them either. You can't legislate against stupidity.

They should leave that boat that’s flipped over as a warning ⚠️ of what could happen if u want to battle with waves 🌊 that your boat can’t handle
