He's one of the founders and in that sense, he's like Steve Jobs. He was selling the game to the world and don't really know everything. Yeah the pre-ordering needs to stop. I worked at gamestop and it was sickening. It's all they cared about. And threatened their employees about, to force it down customer's throats. That and dlc for unfinished games are ruining gaming. There's a reason the most famous game characters are 10+ years old.

in this game a lot of features seem to be missing, but they said multiple times that it is no classical multiplayer and we should not think of it as a multiplayer game.

Ld Alexandrite Well you can't manually fly to the sun in the current solar system so you definitely can't fly to a new solar system. The only way is to open up the menu and select a star to 'warp to' which just brings you to a loading screen

When Sean Murray is talking about the game, he sounds like a middle-schooler trying to think up his dream video game with his friends, just adding on all the features he wants with no regard to plausibility or actual technical restrictions. I honestly feel he never meant to...I don't want to defend this game because yes, it has loads of features that were missing but for an indie team of 13 people and lots of legal issues and deadlines, they tried their very best. I also believe in its community of models who will make the game we were promised. Give it time, it might get better but for now we have an infinite world with not much to do...hope for the best?

The interviewer asks about a lot of features that would be really dumb and extremely difficult to code for, but Sean Murray immediately promises that they'll be in the game no matter how dumb or impractical they are. I mean, interplanetary cross-breeding? Fuckin' really? What sane game developer would promise something like that? More important is the way Sean Murray is talking. He says things with just a little bit of uncertainty in his voice. If it were a game developer listing features or ideas he's already had for the game, he'd have no problem talking about them. But there's just a little bit of hesitation in his voice that implies he's literally making things up on the spot.

They do not own the IP, they did not publish the game, they didn't develop the game and they let Sean choose exactly when he wanted to release it. I could care less about the game. I haven't played it and I won't. But it's usually the publishers fault, unfortunately Sony didn't publish it.

Calling it a tech demo is a bit unfair since there are so many players spending a significant portion of their day in the game since launch. Tech demo would suggest that it doesn't hold interest for more than a couple hours at best. That it didn't deliver on everything promised, suggested or implied, is certainly a fair criticism, but it still appeals to and holds the attention of a significant portion of the gaming community.

A fairly popular theory going around right now is that they actually made a better game (doubtful), but it was just impossible to run on a PS4 which is the equivalent of a low end 2011 laptop, so Sony forced them to use an old build without most of the features to make it just barely run. Then again there's the Stephen Colbert interview where Sean shows off several planets as a "demo" but they're clearly hand crafted as he never actually types in a name for any of the stuff he's naming.

Actually, about planet namek. Even though the anime screws up timing, in reality it was probably 5 minutes. Why? Kaioken. It lasts for a single heartbeat, yet in dragon ball z could last for a very long time. It's because the fighters move so fast that even a heartbeat is a long time. So it could have very well been five minutes. Unfortunately, the speed at which the fighters move would make dialogue impossible, so they just ignore that part. I'm fun at parties I swear!

A year in mars is two years on earth since Mars is further away of the sun than we are. All planets have different senses of time since it all depends on how fast the planet spins and how far away it is from it's sun so when you say that Frieza was lying.. he wasn't.. you just failed to realize that Namek has different senses of time but i came to save your life just now. Just wanna point out in 2023 the game has become one of the best gaming redemption stories ever, is popular and continuing to grow and now features almost everything mentioned in this video. It took them years but people love this game now and they got it beyond what they promised

This. Pre-ordering does not benefit you the consumer in any way, shape or form. If anything it incentivizes companies to actively screw you over. Take for instance SF5 that had pre-order exclusive costumes. So these costumes were created before the game was released....as in, within the development cycle....but even if you pre-ordered, you were only given ONE....not even the whole set. However, picture this: A car company promises a car that does hands free parking, bluetooth audio, and 6 person capacity, but sells a car equivalent to a 1994 Toyota Camry. I would be pretty upset that they sold something that was completely different than they promised. This goes with any other product. He brought this upon himself.

Im no a gamer, i dont follow game news, all i heard was the whole creator lies and game that didnt meet the hype or expectations and i left it at that, a failed game no need to look further into it. But man was i wrong, i picked it few weeks ago, the amount of work creators put into this well after they got ridiculed is outstanding. They couldve taken the money and left. Honestly I have respect for those guys. Makes me wonder if they delayed launch a bit maybe non of this would’ve happened.

you feel bad for a liar and a thief? See, thats one of the big problems in todays world. Dont feel bad about him getting repercussions for his actions. He deserves every once of hate he gets. That man became an instant millionaire off of the flat out lies to tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of people. The author says he shouldnt be lynched or whatever and I agree on that one. However, he should face enough litigation to where if he DOES make another game, every single penny of profit should be sent out to the people who bought NMS on day 1 based off of his lies. Even after the PS4 version came out, he pops off that you cant base your judgement off of that release adn there would be massive changes with day 1 of the PC. Instead, we got a crap game that wouldnt run on most systems which looked -exactly the same- as the PS4. No, this piece of shit is nothing but a stain on the game industry and should NEVER be allowed to work in the field again. Hopefully he will be flipping burgers in a couple weeks

and yet if you didnt pre-order and bought it at launch, you were STILL lied to since the devs refused to give review copies out because the Knew they were Lying about the content of the game. Hell, they are continuing to lie about the game to this day. Their ads continue to use videos and such which show features that quite literally exist no where in the game.

the problem or more the "question" is : even if his team thought it could accomplish everything he said (they must be real stupid to overestimate themselves this much since the game isnt even half done ) than why didnt they give another interview before the release to state the truth and give the players some real information ? or why didnt they just lower the price to 10-20 euros ? they could have said "we are really sorry , we overestimated us with this first big project of us , and we have to release the game . so the game will be only early access with less (following) futures . though its cheaper now and we will give you the missing futures with dlcs from time to time . " and everything would have been fine . but they fucking continued to lie , they just betrayed all the people who buyed the game for full price . because they wanted the money . and if you betray people for money you should face some consequences . there are a lot early access games out there that do not have much more content than this raw material but they are at least honest and call themselves early access games for around 20 dollars . in this case they should go to jail for there lies . i curse them all for playing with our hopes and dreams for some shitty money .

Planets orbiting the sun *was* a thing, in the beta, as far as I know, and was removed due to people complaining about it being extremely disorienting. As for hacking and Space battles, I'd imagine freighter combat would look cool enough, and might get added in the future, who knows, hacking, hacking seems like useless feature.

@@thealien_ali3382 They added full multiplayer about 2 years ago. The game is actually good now with 3.0 just coming out most of the features sean said we'd get have been added. I would highly recommend No Man's Sky, I have well over 500 hours of playtime. it's really great and it's on sale on steam for 50% of meaning it's only $30.

I want Hello Games to announce a new game just to see what people would say.

I haven't seen any interviews w/ Sean lately. It's like he vanished into the night, laughing maniacally with all our money in pocket. He had to have known people would be angry when they realized how much he deceived everyone. If it was a legit misunderstanding, he would've been right out there trying to apologize and make it right, but he hasn't been. Instead it's fallen on Steam and Sony to clean up the mess, offering refunds, etc.

Yep. Testers said they got disoriented. Some even reported it as a bug due to not realizing they were disoriented.

Honestly even after the update im still disappointed with the game. Sure everything has slight differences in appearence, but it all feels the exact same. A tiger creature with 3 heads and 7 legs will act the same way a panda creature with fourteen eyes and two legs will. Its not the fault of the makers of the game, its just not realistic to design such a massive universe that doesnt feel the same. They shouldnt of advertised the game as a triple A game and they maybe should of made 5-6 extremely detailed and large planets rather than billions of boring ones

@@MyouKyuubi they weren't exactly lying. They had big ambitions for the game before everything went wrong. These interviews happened before their studio got flooded, which caused a ton of lost progress, all while dealing with a massive copyright lawsuit for using the word "sky" in the game title. For a small group of devs, it was impossible to put in the features they had previously promised. and they were forced to rush out the game because fucking Sony kept pressuring them to release the game before it was ready. Not to mention that instead of taking the money and abandoning the game like most AAA companies, they worked their asses of to put out updates and dlcs for completely free. Sean sold his house to keep the project going ffs. NMS is a completely different game than it was at launch and a ton of features promised before launch have already been added.

I'm pretty sure Sean Murray destroyed his career with this game. Lies are never forgotten.

I would suppose that he really did have the ambition to add all these things, but realized it was undoable and, perhaps in combination with release date pressure from Sony, decided the current build would 'have to do.' He most certainly seems like someone who was not ready for all the media attention and is just nodding along with all the positive publicity he was receiving. Inexcusable, and this should warrant refunds, but certainly not malicious, I'd say.

Some of the stuff he said seems to have been a lie, but I reckon he was either overly optimistic about development or he was talking about features that existed but were then pulled from the game before release. Either way, the game is awesome now so yeah.

Nice to come back and see that most of these things are now true to the game.

That's an unfair comparison. It's not like the missing features were so massive. They were all minor features, outside of the hint of multiplayer. Using your comparison, it would be more like; Here's a brand new car for $10,000. It's spacious, has good AC, lots of leg room, comfortable interior, and a great design. Oh, but don't mind the lack of a center console. We didn't think it would be that important to listen to music or control your AC/heat temperature manually. That's more accurate. Yeah, it sucks, but it's still a car. No Man's Sky is still a game, it's just missing some things that would make it much, much better.

Luke Puffer Yeah, I've cleared it too (Well, getting to the first center), and I thought it was... well... fine, for what it was. Disappointing, for sure, but I was still pretty sucked into the planets and space flight. And the missing features are not that massive, especially when the main advertisements for the game were the 18 kajillion (I know it's a fake number) planets and being able to fly seemlessly from planet to planet. That was the main features, for sure, but I think too many people were hoping for a Mass Effect experience from this indie team. I personally didn't expect that at all, so my disappointments were simply not being able to do small things like run into other players, land on asteroids, and join factions. None of those features are "massive" by any means, but they would have definitely made the experience a little more fun. And calling for Sean Murray to die is excessive. C'mon. Be a little more mature than that.

"Then you start digging and QA starts hitting your code. The issues start coming out and the ripple effect happens. Certain features get smashed with a ton of bug reports after hours of play. Fixing those features would take weeks if not months of man hours to fix. So you have to decide to cut it to make your date. Cutting that feature invalidates another feature and so that too must be cut. Leaving another 3 features in and you realize you are getting horrible frame rate loss on the console. You need to cut those or figure out how to optimize them. (Optimize is usually the last thing we do after we are feature complete). A domino effect occurs. You start to watch years of your life fall apart on the 11th hour. You are not even worried about sales, you are worried what people are going to say about your game. How do you address this, what can you say? Most of the time you can't say anything for a multitude of reasons. Or you are TERRIFIED to say something." "It seems the real issue seems to be the people feel mislead and lied to. I want to objectively ask you why you think he would do that? What does he have to gain from lying about these features? Isn't that pretty much professional suicide?"

i feel hes a good guy... but hes afraid of sony. Sony hype this so much it went over his head until he trapped himself. If it was just an indie team w/ little PR not hyped this much and maybe a 20$ game, it will not go this bad... sorry for my english

dennis delacruz Well, I've got more fun out of No Man's Sky than Witcher III and The Last of Us put together. I think whether or not people like No man's Sky comes down to what sort of player they are.

When I was in the 1st grade my teacher went around the class asking us to name a bunch of words with the "ig" sound. I had my hands raised for a long time but she didn't get around to me until all the words I was familiar with were already said. On the spot I just put a F in front of ig not knowing fig was an actual word. Impressed my teacher asked if I had a fig tree in my backyard, I said yes. The rest of the year I had to juggle that lie, with my teacher always asking when I was going to bring some figs into the class. Watching him talk about the multiplayer aspect of the game gave me the same level of uncomfortable chills.

"And you can do [x] thing?" "Yeah, yeah... sure (whatever)"

Just for anyone watching this NOW, I just want to say how this guy has TOTALLY changed. He is adding a whole TONNE of content in a few days including VR and taming.

The number of things that are in this video that are NOW in the game is actually quite staggering.

Yes NOW nearly in 2020 we have some of the things he promised pre release in 2016...4 years later, we have a few of them.

Starbound is like this game but better if you don't mind retro graphics

I haven't found a single ship that doesn't look like it was awkwardly build from left over lego sets.

Its probably a good exercise in one of those "how to spot a liar" psychological/body-language documentaries.

I bet Sean Murray watches videos like this to motivate himself some more in developing NMS ... even though it has far surpassed expectations at this point.

Darth Sceledrus Why? Hello Games could have told Sony that there was no way they could do it in the timeframe they were given, so Sony gave them a month or two extra, but nothing more so thye had to scratch a lot of features.

Its weird. You can see how happy he is as he talks about his expectations for the game and then when he's talking about the actual game and its mechanics he just seems so depressed
