The Night NASCAR Fans Literally DESTROYED Daytona

Спорт

The Daytona summer race is one of the most traditionally entertaining races of the NASCAR season. There have been insanely wild moments since its inception. Due to this fact there are also great or crazy moments that get overshadowed by other more famous ones. This is exactly what I think happened to the 2002 Pepsi 400. So today we are gonna look back at this race, the night NASCAR fans literally destroyed Daytona.

I was 15, and this was the second Pepsi 400 I attended. My family and I were on the backstretch in the middle of all of this happening, and boy... Do I remember it vividly! I remember my mom and dad being very appalled by the behavior. My brother and I thought it was hilarious. I'd say at the very beginning it was a handful of fans who were actually upset and throwing anything they could over the fence. And then it was just a chain reaction of others joining in, but I'd say most of them were doing it out of the hilarity of the situation after a certain point. Definitely a moment I will never forget!

  • @ronwilliams329

Yep, I was appalled as well. As someone who has seen some really bad things that happen to innocent people when fans start throwing stuff I'd fully support a law (like some cities already have in place) to put the offenders in jail for 14 days and fine them $1,000 to $5,000 for throwing objects into the field of play at sporting events. There is simply no excuse for such behavior. I often wonder where these types of people are when an election gets stolen, LOL!

This was one of Jeff Gordon's best races in my opinion. If you wanna see what made Jeff Gordon "Jeff Gordon," watch this race. The aggression he showed trying to get his lap back and how hard the field tried to keep him a lap down really highlights how good he was in his prime. EDIT: And this incident is pretty disgusting. Much worse than the 2004 Dega incident where Gordon won fair and square by the rules and hadn't done anything wrong, but it was far less of a surprise considering who the 2 drivers involved were. But this one is worse because for one, Jr wasn't even close to winning - he tried and he lost out hard and that's nobody's fault but the 8 team's. And secondly, if there is any other driver that Jr Nation should have liked at that time it's Michael Waltrip. The fact that they'd be that irrate about Michael Waltrip winning for the first time since the '01 Daytona 500 is pretty upsetting.

  • @sevendst19

I hated Gordon, and I think he had to pit for some unknown reason as the race went green off a caution. He got out well ahead of being a lap down but with no drafting partner, so we were on the backstretch counting the time from when he went by until the leaders went by until he was finally lapped. There was no wave around then either so he had to pass the leader to get the lap back. I just knew with him a lap down he had virtually no shot at winning.

I think the problem is less so Jr being out of it and more so that rule about ending on caution. With an honest restart there's always a chance. Watching the laps tick away without any racing sort of feels like being robbed. Imagine if in football the penalties resulted in automatic clock running and no play. That would be pretty absurd.

I may have some context as to why everyone was so pissed off that night. As we all know, Dale Earnhardt Jr. was the most popular NASCAR driver at the time, and his father’s passing in 2001 further cemented that. As for Michael Waltrip, he wasn’t nearly as liked as Dale Jr. In fact, he was probably one of the most hated. A lot of people, at the time, thought that he was a “waste of space” in DEI, and should’ve been replaced with another young, upstart talent. For example: Kurt Busch, Ryan Newman, or Jimmie Johnson. Everyone treated his 2001 Daytona 500 win as a fluke, and it didn’t help that Dale Earnhardt passed away in that same race, resulting in hardly anybody remembering who won. By 2002, Michael’s poor performances in top level equipment resulted in him being extremely hated. Even when he did get his win, everyone was pissed because Daytona had pretty much been a luck based racetrack since the restrictor plate era. For example, Jeff Gordon struggled the whole race due to a flat tire and Tony Stewart, who wrecked out early, would later on become the 2002 Winston Cup Champion. Had Junior won, the crowd reaction would’ve been totally different. Previous events up to this point led up to the reaction.

  • @ryanwilson5301

    @ryanwilson5301

Make sure that you note what is said is opinion and not factual. To say Michael Waltrip at that point in 2002 was the most hated driver out there is not accurate at all. If he was hated it probably definitely was not because of his "poor performance" over one and a half seasons in "top level equipment". Not everyone treated Waltrip's 2001 Daytona 500 win as a fluke, maybe some did but definitely not everyone. People were probably pissed solely for the fact that Dale Earnhardt Jr lost but I'm sure alot fans were pissed at how the race ended in general. Nobody really wants to see a race, let alone a Daytona race end under caution.

When NASCAR actually does something like implementing a rule primitively that no one is concerned about (fans, media, players, managers, GMs, and owners alike) it is usually going to go wrong and negatively impact the sport. If rule changes or clarifications are needed NASCAR is always too late and dragging their feet to correct an issue that has gone from an ant hill to a mountain in that relatively short amount of time! If it takes people destroying property which is pathetic behavior and NOT the correct way to plead for a better product first and foremost! This is just entertainment, and like always NASCAR will have lost control of a situation and are running scared, in panic mode, and desperate damage control which we all know that type of decision making is NEVER good. Well, that is until NASCAR the only sport that changes rules randomly only to hurt the product out on the track and not correctly changing rules that are in need of obvious change and correction. It is sad that NASCAR needs a riot to realize they need to update a rule quickly and in doing so create a butterfly effect because it is rushed with little to no forethought of how much it will be hurting the racing in general for years to come. Not to mention it is compounding the larger problem until they reach the point of no return and the sport dies just like where MLB is heading right now as well!

This was common in the earlier days of NASCAR. Even as late as the early 90's it happens. People don't realize back in the day in the grand stands people would throw their empty beer cans down to the walkway at the bottom of the track so things were being thrown around constantly anyway. Every race I went to back then (90-92) Martinsville and Charlotte, it was like this. I was in Charlotte the year Davey Allison won the Winston sideways cause Kyle Petty was wrecking him trying to win, all this with Earnhardt spinning out in turn 4 trying to pass Davey. As they passed the finish line all I saw was a bombardment of cans and plenty went over the fence onto the cars and track. You could lean right up against the fence as the cars went by. Be only 6 ft away from the cars going 170 mph down the front tri oval at Charlotte. Racing was so much fun back then. I remember my parents got the tickets for the race for only like $10 each (good seats, high enough to see everything low enough to still feel the action) by saving Winston cig wrappers. Much like Camel cash and Marlboro miles.

If moonshiners had restrictor plates, we'd have no NASCAR.

I was at that event when I was 10 and if It saw this today and even my 10 year old self, I would be mad at the fans for throwing beer cans and chairs onto the track

My friends died in 2007. They loved racing. Whenever I see racing from this era i think of them because I know they were watching

The fans paid for a race. Instead they got a clown show. They had every right to show their displeasure.

Hot take: Contrary to popular belief, Dale Earnhardt's death wasn't what led to the downfall of NASCAR. His son's cancerous fanbase was.

His bad fanbase was a small part, but the main cause of the decline is what Brian France did to NASCAR.

Don't end under caution. It's like finishing with a tie. The race is unresolved in my mind. In my DRUNK mind....it's the greatest travesty that can be experienced. Gimme that chair...

Fans came to see a race not a trot around the track. Glad they have fixed this for the most part.

I was at this race and I remember what happened very vividly. Everyone was upset that the finish went under caution. What I always remember is when they interviewed Sterling Marlin and he talked shit about the fans in the "cheap seats" throwing the cushions on the track. Which was patently false. The seat cushions were given out to the higher priced seats, not the regular grandstand areas. Sterling always became "Cheap Seats" Marlin for me after that. I really resented him for going after a lot of the die hard fans that went to races every year. When it was the sponsor's guests or other white collar people that threw those cushions out there on the track who probably didn't give two shits about NASCAR. NASCAR started really catering to those people and priced out a lot of their loyal fanbase. Parking at Daytona would go from 10 to 20 bucks to 50 and 60 bucks. Seat and merch prices went up and up. It's a shame.

Why nascar ever allowed caution lap finishes just boggles the mind.

It’s surprising that it doesn’t happen more often, as it takes place in other sporting events-football, baseball, basketball, even soccer. But I believe the main reason it doesn’t happen in NASCAR is that it presents a danger to the drivers, as debris on the track is so detrimental to a race car and the safety crews.

😆 I was there that night. On the back stretch. My first nascar race. Epic. It was raining beer cans and seat cushions. This may have been the last night they sold bucket beer deals at Daytona.
