The NHL Never Wanted This To Happen

In 2016, NHL fans got the opportunity to vote WHOEVER they wanted into the NHL All-Star Game. That would lead them to vote in enforcer John Scott. What would happen next would go down as one of the greatest moments in NHL all star game history.

Exactly. At least he gave it his all, and that's why it was so good. ASGs suck because nobody is trying. I think the NHL should have embraced something like this for ASGs going forward, letting the fans vote on their favorite "character guy" to be a captain. Give those players who work hard every minute even if they don't have big roles a chance to shine. Still, the John Scott ASG was the best one I've ever watched in 30+ years, and I'm so happy he wasn't bullied out of it.

I was a goalie. Went to a random summer drop-in game - I was 16 or 17 years old. For some reason, John Scott was there. He took one shot, a simple wrister from the top of the circle and hit me on the inside of my arm, underneath the pad. It was the single hardest shot I had ever faced (left a major bruise on my arm) and it was a throwaway shot from him. He was a great guy the entire game and took a picture with me afterwards. He was a great guy to be around - it was around the time described in this video.

After thr All Star game, John's NHL career amounted to a single game for Montreal with 9:01 of ice time, and 2 minutes in the penalty box. What the NHL failed to understand is that John Scott on that moment represented the fans in a why that a guy like Conor McDavid never can. He was a guy that wasn't fortunate enough to be born with generational talent. He was a guy who had to fight for every minute he could get. And so, he was a proxy for the dreams of the common fan. The dream of regular perosn having a chance to lace up the skates with the best and simply have fun with the best in the world and feel like you are accepted. I'm very glad for him, and also for the superstars who got a reminder of how special it is to play at that level.

The best all star weekend I watched. The NHL needs to go back to this if they want the viewership…

He was only -19? Incredible numbers for a pure enforcer, even with very limited minutes.

I think one thing that gets overlooked is the other players at the all-star game embraced it and supported John Scott. They could have easily just gone through the motions with him there but they all rallied around him and made some truly awesome moments, that's what makes it really special. It was kind of like a thank you to all the enforcers who had ever played in the NHL from the fans and the star players.

I remember not knowing who he was but voting for him that year. Stopped my vacation to watch that all star game and it's the most I've ever been in love with hockey. Such a special weekend, everything about it was so pure and so incredible to watch unfold.

That’s a great story. Embarrassing that the NHL tried to undermine the fans like that.
